Anyone have seborrhoeic dermatitis? I have a friend who is dealing with it and is having a hard time growing her hair out?

Any hair tips? What are your (hair) experiences? Can you wear a weave? What's the weave upkeep like?

TIA :yep:

My cousin has this and I would also like to know. She had really bad patches on her scalp but they are getting better but she can have a flare up any minute.

I had it from reaction to indigo, i was treated by derm with derma smoothe, and medicated shampoo. The shampoo dry me out and i loast hair, the last medication i received wss fluconide (lidex) stop dermatitis, i now shampoo once a month but cowash twice a week. My hair is growing back. She needs to see doctor for sure to get medication and find out what cause the dermatitis.

Cowashing greatly helped me deal with it. I think Shampoos at the Salon was responsible for my contracting it.

Now, sometimes certain products mainly those with Citrus Oil will cause it to flare up (so I try to avoid them).

I do keep a perscription Shampoo from the Dermatologist on hand, but I now 'rarely' use/need it since I: a) started Cowashing and b) watch certain products like shampoo that could potentially cause it to flare up.

thank you ladies! i really appreciate it. she has medicated shampoo but are you saying shampoo causes flare ups? why is that?

I have SD and I've written tons of posts on my blog of what has helped me. By far, what has worked for me is has been ACV, coconut oil, essential oils. They keep my SD at bay.

For me had it about 10 years. When I stopped using stuff like nizoral it got better. When I went natural it got a lot better. I'd say if her medicated shampoos don't work or if she's using them 3+ times a week its a good idea to try something else BUT only after trying more than 1 dermatologist. I went to about 3 of all races, ages, and specialties.
For me shampoos with tea tree oil help like giovanni, bwc, paul mitchell etc. Also cowashing helped in summer but I still got some build up which is where tea tree shampoos helped. Also hot oil treatments. I mix an essential oil with a carrier right now I'm working with olive oil and eucalyptus. I put it in an applicator bottle and rinse my scalp then apply it and massage to soften any scales or flakes. I put on a plastic cap and put a towel or scarf over that and leave it either overnight or just 1 hr. Then I deep condition and shampoo. I notice sometimes with sd you'll get build up if you shmpoo and then condition which is why some doctors make the MISTAKE of saying don't use conditioner that's why they told me and it held me back. Anywho besides that I take msm which helps and I use countrylife maxi to help with hair growth. My scalp is a lot happier now especially when I exercise, keep stress down, and cleanse 2x a week.
Different things work for different people and many have also had success with shea moisture black soap shampoo, conditioner, and elixir. Also chagrin valley shampoo bars helped me get rid of the redness. She has to be gentle with her scalp and using harsh ingredients. Also efas help too I keep wheat germ, fish oil, and cod in a rotation. So many possibilities. acv is good too in some cases after shampooing add a tiny amount to a bunch of water and soak the scalp in it. Hope some of that helps...
Just for an example here's my reggie when I'm dealing with an SD flare

EVOO & Eucalyptus Oil
AO GPB as a deep conditioner for strength and to stop shedding that SD can cause
Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo 2x
ACV or Thin Conditioner rinse
Detangle
Massage and moisturize & seal ends (evoo & whipped shea butter)

Oh and for cowashing the thin conditioners with things like tea tree, lemon, lime, juniper, chamomile, calendula, and all those cleansing and calming ingredients are good. My favorite is vo5 kiwi lime conditioner. I also like giovanni triple treat conditioner but I water them both down to avoid a build up. It gets all the yucky scales and sebum from SD off the scalp.

Just an example

I also have SD. It was so bad that I tried not to wear black because it looked like dandruff. It also came off as little patches of skin and was gross-looking. My hair wouldn't grow, so I kept it early-Toni Braxton short. I kept going to a white derm because she was around the corner, but she kept giving me shampoos and foams that dried my hair out. I finally started going to a well-known black derm. It only took one treatment to see a difference. SD can't be cured; it's a chronic disease, but he gives me a cortisteroid shot only once a year. He also gives me samples of foams or shampoos, but mainly because they're free lol. I usually give them away because the shot usually takes care of it.

I think seeing him, combined with the wonderful advice I've received from you ladies (I now stretch my relaxers to 8-10 weeks, use henna and co-wash) has helped keep the condition in check and I'm now nearly APL.

If your friend doesn't have insurance, I would say co-wash often, treat with Neutrogena T-Gel (let it sit for a few minutes rather than immediately rinse and gently scritch the scalp while lathering to lift the dead skin cells), use SLS-free shampoos, tea tree oil, and natural oils to moisturize hair and scalp. Basically, use as few irritants as possible.

I never went to a derm but knew since I was young it wasn't dandruff..it was nasty thick, peeling, corn flake looking..neways. SOME medicated shampoos helped for a short while and sometimes right after rinsing I would still have flakes. What got rid of it was putting oil on my scalp before I 'poo, I use EVOO, sometimes EVCO too. She can let it sit or put it on and get right to the wash. I would tell her make sure she rubs the oil into her scalp like she's trying to lift them up ex: gentle scrub or scalp massage. The oil seems to break it down so easily and lift it right up to expose that beautifully hydrated skin underneath ;). But try to refrain from oiling inbetween washings because it may just make matters worse, especially if there's visible flaking. I can even skip 1 or 2 oilings before my 'poo and it won't come back. I haven't seen flaking like that in years since doing this. If I do see anything it'll look like a dry scalp, then I know it's time to wash. I wash/cw anywhere from everyday to at least 1x a week and never put anything on my scalp inbetween- don't need to. I suggest washing 1x a week at least for her so she won't have to see it again like me :). It may take a few washings to get rid of all of it but I'm pretty confident this is all she'll need. I got lazy once and let it come back and it took 2 washes to get it back under submission.

I haven't been able to deal with it while wearing a weave, it's too hard to oil scalp and rinse well enough without buildup, so after a takedown it wouldn't look too pleasant and the itching can be irritating.

Also if she uses blow dryers tell her to try to keep the high heat off her scalp. I know when I started this I was still going to the dominican salons and there would be a few flakes here and there on my shoulders- so my theory is it may aggravate or dry the scalp.

Mine was diagnoised as "Contact" Derm. from certain products. As I said before, I NOW Know (Post LHCF) that the Sulfate-Laden Shampoos and other 'not so healthy' Products used at the Salon was causing it.

Once I became a DIY'er and joined LHCF and got some knowledge, my Scalp has never been better.

However, since I am a Ride OR Die PJ, sometimes I will get into products that will cause it to 'Flare Up' like Citrus Oils & other things I have to watch out for.

It's still pretty much "Trial & Error"

That's why I do keep a Prescription for the Nizoral on hand.

Is your friend relaxed or natural? The only reason I ask is because, relaxers + weave + sd= can lead to potential disaster. I had SD for years and acv rinses helped when I was relaxed but the only thing that has truly made a difference is going natural. Even then, It was almost 10 months before i got it completely under control. I use the same products I've been using for years too, so I know for a fact less chemical exposure helped my scalp.

Also, I wore weaves throughout my entire tranistion with no issues, but I did have caked up dandruff for the for the first few weaves. I washed every 10 days and did acv rinsed to help.

I have it as well. I take ACV pills daily and that halted my SD in its tracks. When I forget to take those pills it flares up. I also do a ACV rinse as my final rinse every wash. When I have a flare up I stay away from ALL dairy (milk, cheese, ice cream, etc as they have been known to make flare ups worse. I always get in my hairline so I never use any kind of shampoo to that area when I wash. I just use water but make sure to saturate that area with my ACV rinse.

I have this. The most important thing for me is to keep my scalp clean, especially when it is hot or if I have been exercising (I sweat somewhat profusely). I have to wash my hair at least twice a week. Detangling is important because your hair can get tangled by washing in twists - I would do rope twists but that is somehow worse on my hair -__-

I've also given up on straightening completely - there is NO purpose for it in my life, especially when I wash my hair every two to three days, anyways.

I have had SD in the past, especially when I was relaxed. I thought it was dandruff for the longest. It was really bad. I also had some hair loss as a result of it. It went away after I became natural. I think the relaxer chemicals was the culprit. It flares up occasionaly when I use certain essential oils, so I tend to stay away from them. Sulfur products, like Beemine has helped to grow my hair in thicker, and keeps it at bay. Taking EFAs like flaxseed oils, fish oils, and taking hair vitamins keeps it at bay and the scalp happy. I have seborrheic dermatitis in my scalp. It manifests itself as an oily scalp with large patches of itchy dandruff. I started prepooing with organic evco by NOW and apply it once per week on my scalp. After 3 weeks of doing this, I haven't had anymore flareups. It's now been over 7 months, and I still haven't had any more SD flare-ups. This is after YEARS of going through prescription meds, prescription shampoos and otc anti-dandruff shampoos.

No relaxers. At alllllllll. That made my seb.derm awful. In fact I never had it at all before I got a relaxer. Even with rinsing and neutralizing, it is like your scalp is allergic to your own hair. Go natural, do press and curls, braidouts and twists. I am pretty chemically sensitive after that one relaxer. Products I used before I couldn't after. I never used any dyes or chemicals before. No dyes, relaxers, texlaxers, no chemicals like those should be used if you have seb. dem .
