I guess we all do the same at the begining, with time you will find what works for you and what does not.

I also started here with the coconut relaxer and did nothing AT ALL to my hair, well it was like a good moisturizer. Most of the "creations" i tryed here, didn't work for me, but i'm still looking (i don't spend a lot anyway)

It sounds like you're turning into a PJ (product junkie). It's both a blessing and a curse. Unfortunately in order to know what products work for you, you do need to experiment and try new products (trial and error). But if you're using something that works then stick to it. And remember that just like with everything moderation is key and experimenting too much can lead to setbacks.

simple truly is best and I make an effort to buy only what I will use. if I try something new and hate it....I try to use it up in another way ( pre-poo, leave-in, moisturizer etc.) I've discovered a few new products here but thank goodness no pj-ism. OP have you tried a water-based moisturizer then then sealing with regular oil ( coconut, olive, grapeseed, etc.). Sulfates, mineral oil, beewax, and petroleum based things can make ones hair drier. I hope you get your babies moisture level in check, I know it frustrating.

Ever since I discovered this site Ive been buying up the beauty supply store! Lawddd its so many products and testimonials on this site that you just wanna run out and try everything on your head and TRUST I dont even have it like that money wise.

Some of the stuff I bought has been so so dont see the hype or the regime didnt work for our hair..I tried the natural coconut "relaxer" and was pissed off...It didnt work and it left a bunch of white flecks in all of our hair. I was like money wasted ..down the drain.

THAN I came across blessed angel post in the children's thread about her child's moisture regime and I ran out bought all of those exspensive *** products and NOTHING...Sure it was a lil moist but nothing like her child's results . I just learned that everything dont work for everybody the hard way . My child's hair is so short thick dy and course its bananas and Im still trying to find products that work for her hair .

I don't know why but the bolded made me  But I feel you, I did the same too. I still am tempted sometimes to go run out and buy something, when they post on it. I had my wallet ready just this week. But I thought of past experiences, and that I didn't really need it and decided against it. Once I calmed down I Thanked God I did. I ain't got money like that. :nono:

What about a natural condish mixed with oil to provide her with more moisture? Castor oil might be a good mix in. This mix could possibly be used as a daily leave-in. Mill creek and natures gate are reasonably priced natural condishes that can be found at health food stores and vitamin shoppe. Or maybe a glycerine-rosewater mix followed by oil. You could try making your own hair and body butter at home it would be cheaper and if her hair hates it it would be a great body lotion for winter. Just some ideas.....BUMPING

i'm a newbie too! I have a whole list of things i wanna try but i'm doing it one at a time. The 4 things i started with are:

Clarifying Shampoo
Moisturizing shampoo
Deep Condition
Virgin Olive oil

as long as they don't hurt my hair i'll use these until they are done and then try something new that's on my list and see if i like it better.

I'm going to later buy:

Leave-in Conditioner
More carrier and essential oils
Mega-tek
Protein treatments
& other hair products

so i won't fry my hair with too much product and/ or damage my pockets :yep:

It takes awhile to find staples. Many of us are still at it. Many people don't tell you this part...

Some things I can suggest are to not necessarily run and buy out stuff after a rave review. Rather keep it in the back of your head and write it down and when you have time, look it up in older threads, look it up on google. There are so many black hair blogs these days doing product reviews. Once you have your eye on a product for a long time, it'll be an easier decision on whether to buy it or not.

On this board people tend to write rave reviews either on the first, second or their second trial of a product. This is just a generalization. If you ever search the board and find a rave review from a while ago, bump the thread to ask the OP how it's been going, or PM them if they are still a member. You may not get the Op to answer but people will start responding to the thread again and you can get some new feedback to help you decide.

Finally, familiarize yourself with ingredients. When you spend a lot of time on the board, searching etc, pay attention to the more scientific threads where members are discussing ingredients and types of products. This will help you from making mistakes in product choices.

Don't feel bad about the trial and error, just try to control it. You can always sell products or trade too.

One way i have learned to curb excessive spending on anything, is to sleep on it.

If i still want it 2-3 days later, then i will buy it.

Most of the time the impulse goes away.

Most of us have been where you are!! Just comes with the territory. Don't worry, you will find your staples and focus on a few good products for your hair.

I hear you girl... Since I joined this site, I must have spent thousands of dollars on products...and it's only been 13 months. I am finally getting a grip though. I have found a product that worked like a charm...and then it got discontinued (mother ***).
My plan now is to revisit all my goods and just spice them up by adding oils and herbs and see if I can make them usable

Excellent advice!

Stop buying! Not everyone on this site goes PJ wild, newbs or oldheads.

Chances are the issue is NOT a product one but one of techniques. Invest time in learning how to better HANDLE hair rather than finding stuff to slather it in.

I did the same thing until I realized what products worked for me and I stick with those. I may try a new product every three months or so.

Ok, this is what I did in the beginning. I was some place rather “isolated”, so I made a list before I flew “home" , so I could stock up and take stuff back with me.

I read tons of thread related to my hair issues, desires, and the regimens of people’s hair that I liked. Then, I made a list of the products that were raved about or mentioned in those thread. Then, I put checkmarks next to all of them every time I read that someone had a positive experience with that product or relaxer, and I purchased all of the ones that had the most checks. I was a “little” methodical about it. This was before the airlines liquid/cream ban. I had the largest carry-on I could get away with stuffed with products. Sign of a true PJ ... putting tons of products in your carry-on, because it’s more important than the things in your checked bags.:nono:

Now, some years later, I don’t use any of those products, not one! :ohwell: So, I hope that you find what works without having to spend much money. Try samples when you want to try something new. I can’t say it enough … SAMPLES, SAMPLES, SAMPLES! ….. sAmPlE

Products really don't make the hair. Especially if you mix a lot of products and brands. They could have a chemical reaction, and have the opposite results of what you wanted.

My products ahve dwindled like crazy, I mostly only use pantene its cheap and it works for my hair.

My hair is brittle and dry, so I get products that will help my hair.

You just need to get to know your hair, and get products that are specifically for your hair. expensive isn't always better.

I spent so much money in the beginning. Especially since I did the BC and was trying to figure out how to style my hair. My PJism has curved significantly over the past few months. Its trial and error unfortunately.

Like you I am also new. Before staring my HHJ I didn't care what I put on my hair. I really care about my hair at all. Now I am trying to find out what works for my hair as well as my daughter's. I really want to try natural products and find a commercial product line. The thing is I'm relaxed and she is natural. I guess I am tired of us using seperate products. I haven't tried everything I hear. I also research before I buy.

^^^This is great advice and make sure to Read this before you buy anything else!!! It's a great post with a lot of helpful information to give newbies guidance on what they should be thinking about before deciding to purchase a product. Plus it's pretty concise (all the important points are in the first 10 posts). It really helped me so HTH!!

i agree with jamaraa and sharifeh.

maybe you should slow down on buying products. start off using stuff that you have or tweak what doesn't work.
most likely the things you have may work you just gotta know how to use them and how to apply them to the hair. sometimes hair may not like things slapped on, but rather parted and applied to the scalp first and then the hair shaft. your hair or your dd's hair may like to be bagged w/ or w/o heat. some products may require more time then one would anticipate. and some products may need a little tweaking.
for instance, my dd's hair is constantly dry and i live in saudi arabia so it's very dry in the summer and some of fall....i've bought some things for me but i also like to use them on her. but one thing i keep in my kitchen cabinet is honey. so i started using honey in my dd's conditioner. wow, her hair likes honey. i bought shea butter for ME but i have 5lbs so i have enough to share...well her hair likes shea butter so i use it. don't you know by the time i whip all those ingredients together, i have a smooth and whip'd conditioner that her hair loves.
for my dd i don't go out and buy 50 million products. i use what i have and my main staple is honey. any conditioner i use, it's mostly accompanied w/ honey....and a baggie. so you have to find what will work and/or how to work it. you may just very well have them in your stash and not know it. and you have to give yourself some time. nothing works over night. trust me, i know.

hth

oh yeah and w/ ingredients....you should learn which ingredients are drying. just b/c a product says it's moisturizing...that doesn't mean that it can't have some ingredients that are contradicting. your hair may not like certain ingredients. so labels, labels, labels. just like location, location, location.

Good point about stuff taking time to work...
Sometimes you don't like a product on the first try but then on the third voila....
It was like that with me and aubrey organic honeysuckle rose
I didn't realize it but it was slowly improving the condition and curing the dryness of my hair....
It's difficult to be disciplined and force yourself to finish the bottle when you didn't like it the first time, but you never know.
