Dangers of stretching out a relaxer?

I am five/six weeks post relaxer and enjoying new growth and DON'T want to relax it. Is there anything I should know if I'm going to continue to stretch out my relaxer?

Are you transitioning, or just stretching out the spaces between relaxers?

The longest I have gone recently is 16 weeks, and conditioner washes helped keep my new growth soft.

I also combed only in the shower, and wore my hair in a bun, or ponytail almost everyday.

Conditioner washes helped me greatly while stretching out my relaxer for six months.

The KeraCare Moisturizing Detangling Shampoo is a MUST for me because it leaves my hair with 0 tangles (even at the six month mark).

I also follow each wash with an ACV rinse (to help with any possible tangles that I didn't get with my shampoo). HTH

has anyone had a bad experience from stretching out their relaxer?

i think if u learn how to manage and take care of the new growth, it will be ay-okay.

Right now I'm 11 weeks & 4 days post-relaxer. What's kept breakage at bay is the following: I wash conditioner wash weekly with Aubrey GPB then Kera Care Humecto, Only comb hair after washing it (the Jilbere Shower Comb works wonderfully), and keep my new-growth moisturized everyday with(Kera Care Essential Oils combined with a leave-in, creme hairdress, or avocado butter). I also do a roller-set on wash day and just wear my hair curly until the next wash so that I don't have to comb and manipulate it everyday.

THE MOST FRAGILE PART OF YOUR HAIR IS WHERE THE TWO TEXTURES MEET. KEEP IT MOISTURIZED AND THAT WILL KEEP IT FROM BREAKING (SNAPPING). CO WASHES ARE THE BEST! THAT'S WHAT I DO... IT HELPS ALOT!

Co washes,Surge and Sta So Fro gets me to 13-16 weeks post relaxers along with deep conditioning and protein treatments...

I'VE EXPERIENCED GROWTH, MORE FULLNESS, AND VERY LITTLE BREAKAGE!!! I SAY IT'S THE WAY TO GO! MUCH HEALTHIER FOR MY HAIR OR ANY HAIR THAT NEEDS SOME TLC!

My hair doesn't like when I stretch out my relaxers. Doing conditioner washes seemed to hurt because my newgrowth only became more and more tangled. In my album, I show a pic of my breakage/shedding looked like after going 19 weeks w/out a relaxer. My advice is do what makes you comfortable - when you *begin* to get breakage, start planning your relaxer within 1 or 2 weeks just to be on the safe side.

This is a question for 4ab's. What would be a good relaxer for all that thick new growth? I used Elucence which got most of my new growth but left a little curl at my roots. Is that okay or should the roots be more straightened? TIA.

deep condition and use protein treatments. I would say deep condition at least once a week and do a protein treatment about every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the conditioner you use and the condition of your hair.

I am undecided, actually. My ends were so thin I decided to wait as long as I could w/o relaxing. So far, so good. I'm wondering if I should go all the way!

Currently I am stretching out my relaxer. My last relaxer was in Feb 04 and I plan on going another 5 weeks. And so far I haven't experienced any breakage. I wash/ deep condition my hair twice a week. I also make sure that I use a protein treatment every six weeks and I keep my ends clipped.

I'm stretching mine out too although it's gettin' rough with the new growth. No breakage yet though. 13 weeks seems to be the limit my hair can take before breakage starts. And my hair doesn't like conditioner washes so I'm continuing to wash & deep condition every 3 days keeping my hair moisturized.

My last relaxer was in December. The only neagative thing that I am expirencing right now is that it takes me longer to detangle my hair in the shower after a co-wash cause it's super thick. I was having some breakage last week...but after viewing some other transitioner's posts...that's expected. I agree with Poetess and chi...daily co washes are a big help in stretching out relaxers.

If it wasn't for co washes and coconut oil...I think that I would be in trouble right now. This is the longest that I have ever gone without a relaxer.

I stretched my relaxer out to 18 weeks and NEVER again will I do that. I had severe tangling and matting and I did experience some breakage from the matting that I had to comb through. I think 10 weeks will suffice for me from now on.
