I was thinking about ordering this product from Kinky Curly.com but I wanted to hear some real testimonials before I went and made the investment. If you used it did it do as promised? TIA!!!!

I really like this product. A friend of mine put me on to it and we actually met the sista who makes it. It keeps your hair sooooo moist (almost too moist--it takes a long time to dry) and it works well with Curly Pudding from Curve if you are trying to achieve an all-over curly look. I love using it in my afro puff cause it gives it so much sheen and it defines the curls.

I have used this product on my daughter's hair. I think she has 3a/3b hair type, maybe some type 2b. Her hair is intensely curly, but not coarse like mine. The curling custard is one of the best products that I have found for her curls (but not for her overall hair health). Her hair curls up easily when it is wet, but it needs something to keep the curls defined as it dries. Otherwise the hair at her crown will turn into a dried out fro and the rest will frizz out. The curling custard does the trick for curl definition. The only thing I didn't like is you have to be careful using other products with this if you need to moisturize. If I used it alone on her hair, the hair got dry and dull/ashy looking after a day or two. I tried adding a creamy moisturizer once and the two reacted. My daughter ended up having little white balls of product in her hair, looked like huge dandruff flakes. So I had to wash her hair all over again.

I tried it again and found that if I spritz her hair with water, the curl would reactivate. It got to be too much work trying to deal with it and I also found other products to try on her hair, so I moved on. I didn't pay any money for this product, because my aunt gave it to us. I have never tried it on my hair. I would suggest trying to find a small size to give it a test run before you shell out a bunch of money for it.

I'm 4a and I think it works well. I haven't used it all over yet but I did try it in the back of my head. I have a few photos in my fotki. It also seems like it'll work well with two strands/twistouts (I tried a small section for that also).

It works if you use it per her instructions. Make sure you get the knot today OR a bottle of Vo5 strawberries and cream (def. more economical at .99!) and leave a bit of it on soaking wet hair. Work the product through completely and the less is more rule def. applies.

As someone stated, it takes a long time to dry, but in my experience used correctly your hair stays super moisturized for DAYS. And yep, a little moisture definitely reactivates the product. I'd even suggest you moisturize at night or in the morning with a little daily doctor. I moisturized overnight with a cap and, though I felt sort of l like I was in an old school jherri curl nightmare, my hair was very moisturized in the morning. My hair is color treated. MOISTURE is a must by any means.

Downside? If you use too much it looks like you have snot in your head. Long dry time so you don't want anyone to go in for a feel. Can feel a little sticky after it dries if you apply too much. Pretty expensive. One size only. Shipping costs unless you can get it locally. I'm in L.A. where I get it at a store.

I haven't bought it in a few months cause of my fundage. Plus, the curl definition can be TOO much sometimes and I don't like the curl kit look myself. But I'd buy it again to have on hand just for the moistness.

So you used it at night, while wet, and covered with a plastic cap? If so did your hair dry by morning?

I think I will try it out and see. I saw that Miss Jessi product and boy, that stuff is quite costly!!!

Hi there,

Just to clarify. . .those times that I slept with a cap on the curly custard had already dried a day or two before. I was on my supermoisturizing spree (to ward off the drying associated with color.)

I would spritz my hair with a mix of daily doctor and some other conditioners and moisturizers throughout the day. One night I got the idea of spraying and sleeping with a plastic cap on (to protect my skin from breakouts and hold in the moisture.) That process kind of reactivated the dried curly custard. In the morning, once I removed the cap, it would dry fairly quickly. The first time you apply curly custard it takes a loooooong time to dry. If you don't have a problem with heat I'd follow the instructions but do your hair in big flat twists and sit under a bonnet dryer in order to speed the drying process.

I've never used the Ms. Jessy product so I can't compare, but I think they are BOTH pretty pricey (unless kinkycurly has lowered it's prices). Is it still 29.99?

eta: I love your hair btw!! It's really thick!

Thanks (about the hair)!!!

I think its like $22. If it was $29 I don't think I would even concider it!!!

I have this product and have used it once. I had good results. I look forward to trying it again in the warmer months.

I used this product and liked it. However, being the cheapo that I am, I started using Smooth and Shine curl activator $2.99. I have type 3c hair and this works just as well for me.

I have finished a jar of Curling Custard and it works great for shiny, moist curls, but don't use too much or else you can get a jheri curl effect. I had the best results when I used a small amount after applying Curly Pudding. The two seem to work well together, as the Curly Pudding gives my hair a parched, crispy feel after it dries. As far as cost goes, I believe the shipping on Curling Custard was higher than on Curly Pudding, so it's pretty comparable price-wise when all is said and done. A good cheap alternative that works for me is Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream, available at your local drug store. It's even better when used with Citre Shine Curl Booster.

I bought this today to see if it will help keep my hair moisturized without oil. I read that is the big difference between this and the Jojoba Jelly. For some reason I am convinced my hair does not care for oil that much. Even when I wa relaxed back in the 80's I never put oil in my hair and my hair came out healthier feeling and looking.

Now that I am natural, the oil sits on the top of my hair. I still use products with oil to 2-strand twist (Healthy Hair Butter by Carol's Daughter) b/c I like the shine and definition it gives for twist outs.

But in all - for good health I know my hair doesn't like oil and this product has no oil so I am going to try it out. HECK if it works I just cut down on various products and can use the Elucence MBC shampoo and conditioners with Curling Custard and Knot Today and be through!

Can you say simple? At least that is the plan.

I was just getting ready to post this. I think that Garnier's Soft Curl works just as well......and for $2.99. :)

I've tried alot of stuff, and this is the only product besides fantasia that i can get a consistent defined shiny look. Everything else i've tried, looks one wya wet and then when it dries its a different story (sideshow bob in public!!) I love it, it gives consistent good results, i wish i could buy it in the store.

I tried it. I can't say that I was overly impressed. I have gotten just as good results with other gels and I tried using the VO5 Strawberries and cream with it. I can't say my hair was any more moisturized than usual. It was a birthday gift for me. I think you should see if you can get a sample somewhere first, before investing the money.

 That's so funny, I thought about giving away my Curling Custard because I ended up with the jheri curl effect that you were referring to, now I know I put too much of the product on! I'll have to give it another try now; everyone always had good things to say about it!

As far as a wash & go style...I need to let my hair grow more...so it can hang more...i don't like the effect I get now...just a curly fro...."not my do"

But I do love the Custard for my twists & twistouts....

I get major definition, major shine (like no other product), moisture, and hold....It gives me a totally different look from when I use creams ie. Curls souffle or whipped cream...which is cool for when I wanna switch up, which is often. I get a tighter twist if that makes sense....which ends up giving me more defintion & shrinkage..but that's ok with me

I've only tried it once and I found that it does give good definition but it made my hair a bit crutchtastic (could be that I used too much). It didn't take as long to dry as the curl pudding and it has a neutral smell (not over powering like curl pudding). I like it but I probably won't buy it myself because it doesn't do anything for the shrinkage and mass volume I have going on.
