Curious...Has anyone ever used carrier oils to...

press your hair with? I'm in the process of simplifying my routine (going back to old school) and I was thinking of getting some grease when I press next time in the hopes of getting my hair straighter. Then, I thought about carrier oils, because they're not as heavy as grease.

Has anyone ever done this? What do you ladies think?

TigerLily, when I was natural I used to use olive oil to press my hair. I don't know if that qualifies as an essential oil though. My hair was really soft and shiny when I used it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I do not have any experience with pressing my hair, but do use essential oils as part of my oil mixtures.

I'm not sure from your post, but it seems that you might be planning to use the essential oils straight. So, I'm just posting to say to be sure to use just a few drops of the essential oils in a base of carrier oil if you do decide to use them.

The most important reason for this is that many essential oils are too strong to be used on hair or skin directly. For example, I once poured a few drops of orange essential oil into an empty styrofoam cup and was shocked to see that it ate right through the cup! However, it is perfectly safe to use when mixed with a larger amount of almond, olive, or jojoba oil, etc.

Also, if you are planning to use it straight, you will probably use up the tiny bottle they usually come in a flash, depending on your hair length and thickness.

I hope this helps. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh, TigerLily, I see what you mean! Well, I hope that if you haven't tried any essential oils yet that you might consider using a few drops in your oils. They add such a nice fragrance and also have other beneficial properties, depending on which you use. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I usually use sweet almond or jojoba oil for my base when making a leave-in/finishing treatment. I've been using these oils for many years and do find them to be much better than the hair care products I grew up using.

Olive oil, coconut, and melted shea butter are too heavy for me, unless I am going to wash them out thoroughly after using them as a pre-shampoo treatment. However, many ladies here have had great success when using heavier oils and butters as leave-in/finishing treatments.

Those are a few of the oils and butters I have experimented with. If you decide to give any of them a try, or others, I hope they work well for you. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think I'll try Olive oil...hmmm....

anyone else tried this? Don't be shy ladies! lol!

I've never tried this. I don't see how it would be any different than using a serum (which is what I flat iron with) except that the carrier may not be enough of a heat protectant (in fact, as soon as I read olive oil, I thought about it "cooking" the hair). Just be careful /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I usually use olive oil on the few occasions when I flat iron my hair. I can't use too much though, or my hair will be too oily. I just put some all over my hair as I ususally do after washing my hair and then flat iron.
