What causes this and how do I prevent them??? I'm starting to get them in my crown area. I really had them when I was a relaxed head. they are not as bad as this pic but I've always wondered why I see them on some people and some people I do not.....

I have this issue also and for me it is probably because I can detangle more gently. This area is my toughest because it is a more kinky texture than the rest. If I don't DC at least once a week (even with detangling once or twice a day) this area gets out of control for me. Also, I put my hair in buns or jaw clips a lot. I do one large single-strand twist and then bun it or clip it and I think I'm twisting my hair too tight that it breaks the hair off.

I have noticed shorter hairs in the top area of my head too. I think it comes from parting your hair down the middle and either detangling, braiding, or twisting your hair with that middle part.

It could also be new hairs that have grown in from shed hairs that have fallen out.

I wonder if this can be prevented??? I'm going to try heavy sealing in this area to see if that makes a difference.

It's this yup I said a few weeks ago I was going to stop detangling with the middle part

It's also a possibility that it's not breakage. It's a normal thing for your hair to shed, and normal for new hair to grow in it's place. Maybe it's just more visible since it's growing out the crown? IDK On another note, Kimora's hair is so thick and pretty :yep::gorgeous:

I agree that it could also be new hair. :yep: Broken hair appears to have blunt-looking ends while new hair tapers at the ends. So new hair start thicker and gradually thins.

Try cutting one hair and compare both ends, if the both ends look similar then it's probably broken hair and if one side tapers, it's new.

I am so glad you started this thread. I'm past guessing it away to something mechanical I may be doing (conditioning, moisturizing, styling etc). The difference on my head has gotten so stark I am in the process of deciding between a Komaza care analysis, a regular physician to determine if its a nutritional deficiency, or a dermatologist to tell me if there's scalp/follicular damage. Because something IS NOT right. And no matter how many google searches and message board threads I search through there is no definitive answer.

I noticed some hair like this too in my crown. That area of my hair is the easiest to detangle so I didn't think it was from mechanical damage. I wear a satin pocket bonnet to bed every night. I'm honestly not sure what it's from but new hair growing in is a plausible explanation. It's such a small area that I wasn't alarmed by it.
