CROWN BREAKAGE...HELP!!!!

Idk what to do anymore. It keeps breaking off, is coarse, and has no curl pattern. It's like 3.5 inches long, while the hair around that area is like shoulder length. It's short, it sticks up and is frizzy. I've tried searching the threads for answers and the common answer seems to be 'baby the area' and 'moisturize.' I've been doing both. I DC at least once a week. I henna gloss once a week. I alternate between buns and big box braids with my own hair. Can you tell I'm really frustrated? :(. Anyone have any suggestions? Any have success with this apparently common problem?

My hair has done this a few times due to stress or trauma to my hair for one reason or another. When this happens I wear braids, moisturize everyday and just leave it alone for awhile. I would wear the braids for two to six months at a time and ALL of the hair would grow back and catch up with the rest.

This is where my Hair breaks first too.:perplexed Yeah, you got to keep it extra moisturized and not manipulate that area too much.:ohwell:

I am also trying 'Growth Aids' in that area like MT, Bee Mine w/Sulfur, JBCO etc...and I recently picked up some M/N. I also take Biotin.:yep:

btw: I am relaxed. You didn't say whether you were Relaxed/Natural?
Also, I use a Light Reconstructor Weekly (because of that area). I relax it last and I make sure I don't process it very long.

I have to be REALLY carefull with this area. It grows the fastest so there's more new growth there. While I'm easily detangling the rest of my head, the hair right in the middle top of my head will break off if I'm not too careful.

I am natural. Do you just use it on that area? Does AO GPB count?

Hmm. Do you wear braids with extensions? I kinda don't want to wear extensions anymore, considering I wore them a lot before and am enjoying not having to pay for hair, when I have some already. But, I find when I do braids on my own hair it starts matting up/ loc'ing. Sorry, I'm not leaving many options, but any suggestions? Maybe I just keep up with the box braids (which I keep in for a few days)?

I have this problem too, and this area tends to get a little sore sometimes. I am in the Juice challenge and I have been juicin' that area up more than anywhere else. It seems to be helping a little.

When mine broke off severely in the crown & multiple places (think of Gizmo from the Gremlins, it was too short to cover a track & was just spikey all over only thing I could do was like gel it down (yuck)) MTG is what brought mine back and my hairdresser at the time said that she NEVER saw anyone's hair grow back that fast from breakage. I mixed mine with Parnevu leave in conditioner & peppermint oil & in about 4 months it caught up with rest of my hair.

Okay me too. I also get itchy int that area occasionally other areas of my scalp but usually at the crown and my scalp gets very dry in that area as well.

Yea me too, all of the above... I wonder why that is. That area of my hair is a different texture than the rest of my hair. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Cosigning with all of this. Even though you are natural. I highlighted the relaxing technique for the relaxed heads peeping in.

Protien and moisture have been the key to combating breakage in my crown. Like you I don't have much of a curl pattern in that spot, and it's the driest and coarsest section of my head.

Chi keratin mist after cowashing has helped a lot. As well as using a heavier oil in that area like Castor. It seems to keep the hair very soft in that spot. Oils that are ceramides like Wheat germ oil and Hemp seed oil help to increase elasticity. I prefer to prepoo overnight with these. And last but not least pay extra attention to that area when conditioning.

All of theses little tips have helped me get over the hump of grow/break, grow/break in that section HTH.

AO GPB is a Balancing Conditioner and contains both protein & moisture. If you wanted to go that route, you could to keep that level of balance. I would try something a little bit stronger i.e. a reconstructor to strengthen that crown area up first and then start using the GPB to keep it in balance.:yep: If you want a 'natural' based product: Giovanni Nutra-Fix Reconstructor is a light reconstructor and I think Abba also has one as well.

SheScentIt just came out with her new Okra Reconstructor.:yep:

@1st Bolded: Dry, Brittle, different Texture and when mine 'broke' sometimes it broke all the way down to the NG:perplexed

@2nd Bolded: I douse my hair with moisture in that area. And I apply a little extra product to it on wash day.

@3rd Bolded: Applying a Light/Med weekly reconstructor turned things around and did for me, what no "Stylist/Salon" was ever willing or capable of doing, because it takes time & patience.

It sounds like your crown is a different texture than the rest of your hair and something about your current regimen may be making it angry.

It could be a product you are using or it may be a styling technique. I've read some threads about how henna can be incredibly drying for some and I've also read articles about how henna literally weighs the hair down. I can't imagine that effect would be a good mix with your problem area.

Also, do you comb or brush you hair? And how often? Maybe consider finger-combing.

As a last resort you may want to give that area a trim. If that spot has been the same length for a while that means the ends are breaking at the same rate as the hair is growing. You can break that cycle by cutting off the damaged ends. HTH and good luck.

Yes I wore extensions. I always did mine myself with human hair. So your own hair locks? Maybe try flat twists. Just some kind of style where you're not manipulating your hair.

Oh you're natural! Well it's happened to me both when I was relaxed and natural. The first recommendation I made was when I was relaxed. The second one with flat twists worked for me as a natural. Oh, and I did trim the area first. Sometimes I would wear a wig with the twists underneath because you know how you get tired of the braids and twists. Anyway, it grew right back.
