Crocheting of the hair..... is still being down

I saw a little girl the other day with crochets in her hair and i realized that is the 1st time in years i have seen that. I was thinking of doing my daughter's hair like that, but if folks are not doing it anymore i won't try it.

How long does it take to do it?

Looks like a healthy alternative to getting braids. I had them once...hated them because I had horizontal braids instead of vertical.

If the braider is inexperience with using the needle, they could potentially snag the clients real hair from the root. Or damage the scalp by dragging the hook along it.

Well if you are using human hair, you could try the tree braid technique. Matter of fact I have them in my hair now. The braid does not use a needle, she interweaves the synthetic hair into the cornrow.

If you want, what I call a pre existing braid style, like the above picture...braid the braid loose, so you will have enough room to pull the extension and the needle through. The size of the cornrow will depend on how big the extension piece is. For instance the editor of Ebony wears these. The individual braids, the style of course, are very small, so she can have a smaller cornrow to accomodate it.

Am I making sense.

Plus since you are pretty concious of hair and the proper techniques, you would be okay using the needle.

i understand what you are saying i just can't picture it in my head. I will read a couple more times to see if i get it....after you cornroll the hair loose how do i get the syntheic hair in.....oh nevermind a needle......what kind of needle and how long does it take

Yep you got it. If you go to the beauty supply store, they have different size(length) needles to accomdate what you are trying to do.

Amber, the latchhook method can be very damaging...as any method if the person does not know what they are doing. Eyunka will be doing this on herself or her daughter, so I am sure she will take proper care.

Eyunka, cornrowing the hair will not take long at all if you are a fast braider...i suggest you cornrow your entire head before you start latchhooking your extensions...trust me on this one. The time consuming part will be the extensions, because you do them one by one.

I say about 4-5 hours for your first install. To get a full head you should have about 15-20 cornrows.

on at child's hair Aaliyah is 10....do me a favor if you have time go and look at my fotki and look under my daughter's folder and tell if the braids have to be small, same size or larger than what i normally do.....please and thanks again

i remember these! i used to get my hair crocheted all the time because it was so much faster than braiding. unfortunately, i do remember the stylist snagging and pulling out my original strands multiple times. it does seem damaging in the end but the style was cute

I guess I am the devil, because I had a aunt that used to do them all the time, and it was a healthy protective style for her daughter.

I was just the guinea pig...she wanted to try something different on me

She used to use a needle but she said that it snags the hair too much.

I remember when I use to wear crochet braids back in the day they grew my hair because I wasnt doing anything to my hair but spraying them with a braid spray. I would find someone to braid my hair and I would crochet it myself with the needle as well, but I had to be extra careful when pulling the hair through.

I think it is very protective because your hair is cornrowed as the anchor.

I have thick hair and could never get micros(took to long) plus the removal of latchhook braids is SO easy!!! They do look "fake" but hello..it is a weave...good luck with these braids. Just make sure the rows aren't too tight and she should be good.

I agree. I revisited these braids about a year ago, (they have different hair you can use) and it took her about 3 hours to do and it was much cheaper than individual braids. The only thing I didn't like about crochet braids, was the braider used way too much hair. I just tell them to not use as much, and the braids look fine. I also remember when I had this type of braids several years ago; when I took my hair down, it was thick, healthy and my hair growth had doubled. I have some crochet braided hair that I ordered, but right now I'm doing my own braids and don't know how to do crochet braids. I will do a search to see how difficult it is to do your own crochet braids. I wish you the best.
