Okay so I am now 10 wks post relaxer and I wanted to get some big cornrows just to see me through the next 2/3 weeks before I relax.
I went down the street to a salon where my brother had his hair done which looked good and she was pretty cheap.
All went well she did it really them neatly and was also very fast. She sealed the ends with rubber bands and then picked up a pair of siscors.

SHE THEN PROCEDDED TO CUT OFF ALL THE BITS OF HAIR THAT WAS STICKING UP OUT OF THE CORNROW BRAIDS.

I brought my friend with me and was speaking to her so I didn't notice till after she took the fist snip. I looke up and was like "Did you just cut my hair?" she said yes and that she was keeping it neat?? I almost went crazy. What the heck would my hair have looked like when I had taken it out and found all these little cut hairs all over the place? I was really pissed, paid the woman and left.
I went to this salon becasue I thought that it was impossible to mess up something so easy... I guess I was wrong..

I don't blame you for going psycho on her. I have never understood this practice...not even when they're doing it to micro extensions.

But I always thought that that was the fake (synthetic) hair, if you used additional hair, that was sticking up out of the braid that they cut away. Am I wrong? I probably am but I just assumed,...ANYONE?

When I used to get individual braids, they would do the snipping AND the lighter trick. I used to wonder why I had so many frizzies when putting my hair back into a ponytail then I remebered what happened when my braids were in.

I remember that lighter thing too,...so doesn't that mean that they're cutting or burning away the synthetic hair and not our's?

They cut your hair and the added on hair when they do that trick with the scissors. That is why I don't get braids anymore.

Don't believe the hype. They are definitely cutting your hair. Think of it this way - the synthetic hair is usually long and straight, so why would there be little hairs sticking up all over the place? At most, they would be concentrated to one place. They used to try to tell me that it was the synthetic hair, until I - like nurseN98 - started noticing more frizzies, etc. after taking my braids out. I NEVER let them do this to me anymore.

Plus, it's better to be safe than sorry. I'd much rather have frizzy braids than risk coming out with uneven hair and split ends after removing the braids.

There's certainly no real way for them to tell which is which (your hair vs. the fake hair) if you ask me. I never let them do that when I get my hair done in cornrows. I still get them when I want them, I just watch them very closely and as soon as they go for the scissors...

Just hearing this makes me want to spit nails! I have really never understood some of these practices and why people allow them to be done to their hair. I mean, GLUE and actual FIRE from a lighter, that is insane. Glue and Fire belong far, far, far away from your head!! Sorry this happened to you Xena.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, Xena. I had a horrible experience at the braiding salon last month, so I feel your pain.

Sorry to hear that. I hope your hair is not noticably chopped! Thankfully the girl who braids my hair doesn't do this. Her braids are so tight that there really isn't any hair sticking up. I have braids now and I can see a few strands here and there but nothing too extreme where it takes away from the style. Good Luck

Some of that hair may be yours and some is the synthetic hair. The same thing happened to me when my braider moved away and I couldn’t contact her and I wanted to get the front of my braids redone. I went to another friend of mines and once she was done I went to the mirror and saw all the strays/flyaways, whatever you want to call them sticking out. I did have to cut it because I didn’t want my braid looking a mess. Yes some of it was my hair but it was also the synthetic hair. When you get your hair braided and the person splits the hair (pulls it) to make it longer depending on how they do it you will get these. You should consider another braider. My regular braider never left me with this problem.

Really and Truely, your hair should not be sticking out to begin with. Sometimes people braid sloppy and this is why hair maybe left out. If you do not weave the braiding hair securely with the real hair, then hair will be sticking out. I am not a liscensed cosmotologist, but I braid hair ALL the time, and I NEVER have to cut anyone's hair, EVER. I am so sorry you had this experience. She was dead wrong for cutting your hair.

dont let them do this! if they were really good braiders they would know that sectioning the hair at the ends into 3 sections again will make the ends not stick out! if they are cutting, they are cutting YOUR hair! dont let them lie to you! synthetic hair is all one length and doesnt flick out the ends..YOUR hair however is shorter and isnt all one length so when they are cutiing, *snip-snip* its your hair!

Thanks for the support guys.. Luckily she only cut one or two hairs but before I started this board I would have let her carry on and then complain to my friends later but not anymore.
I find that everytime I get cornrows I have a few hairs sticking out especially where my real hair ends.. Does that mean that the person is not doing a good job?
Anyone know if it is alright to just use some gel to slick those suckers down?
