Cornrows are "out of style?"

From where i'm from in West Africa, cornrows will never go out of style!
Its like the ponytail going out of style for white women or something.
Anyway i don't wear them anymore, but i rocked them all through school and loved them. If my edges could take it, i'd be cornrowing all the time!
*SMH* Why is everything black Ghetto nowadays?

Corn-rows these days are associated with images that many don't want to keep

1. Dike Lesbian
2. Ghetto
3. Criminal- I mean like The ghetto girl in the movie that shoots up everyone
4. Young child- some people think a grown woman should not rock it

I find all these stereotypes hilarious. I wore cornrows just a few months ago, and will wear em till I die. My granny who is in her 80's still rocks em. Maybe its because I am African and don't understand how they can go out of style. You know a co-worker (who is white) told me her parents got mad because her teenage sister came back from the Caribbean with corn-rows, Huh! Sounds like a racial issue to me. So I am going to ask, is natural hair out of style too?

I don't think braided styles are ever out of fashion for black women, cornrows are a basic style. It may not be trendy right now but do you. I agree, that it's like saying a ponytail or bun is out of style.

Just because you don't see alot of people rocking them doesn't mean they are out of style. I don't see many AA women rocking WL hair, does than mean it is out of style:rolleyes:. I think as long as you make them structured to your style it will be all good.:yep:

Do you think so? I told my bff i wanted to get cornrows for a protective style and she laughed at me and said "Nobody where's cornrows anymore! They're out of style!" Now that i think about it, i haven't seen anyone on campus rockin cornrows for awhile now, so i'm like "hm...?"
I thought cornrows were kind of a classic style? Maybe i'm wrong? I don't want to get them and have people look at me like, "Why?" lol. Does anyone still wear them?

If you like them, have them done. They should reflect your personality. Besides, classic movie stars coined a look for years with glasses frames, a type of dress, colors whatever. Maybe this will be your signature look that is older than the pyramids of Giza. Go for it gurl!

I bet some fool is going to state on a fashion show that natural kinks are passe' someday. -Shoot, I was shocked that women are back into rollersets. I remember those from back in the day. Seems that whatever is best and beneficial towards health always finds its way back.

So, if someone wears cornrows, people associate this with being gay, no-class and a violent criminal? Good L-rd. I know we won Obama...but sheesh...the things we have yet to overcome. Weighs so heavily on me.

You know what, my 14-year old came home complaining about classmates (my kids are token coloreds there!) saying everything was ghetto, like it's a euphemism for Black. Euphemism. That's supposed to be a kinder, gentler way of saying the same damned thing. I told her that I'm going to start saying negative things are "trailer trash" and see how many eyebrows are raised from that.:wallbash:

I wanted to get some, but I also thought they were out of style, but I am glad to hear people are still rocking them. I haven't seen any, personally, in a while.

So true!!!! I had a stylist who was into healthy hair a few years back. She put me on to roller-wraps, but I was like nah, I want my hair flat ironed! :rolleyes:Mind you, her hair was BSL and she tried to tell me!!

OP, rock your cornrows!

Gurl....go-on and get your cornrows on... Who cares what they're thinking....and as soon as your bff sees them..she'll want some to. LOL

Ditto, I don't do "ghetto styles" outside the house. They are good for underneath weave though. I just feel so butch whenever I wear them as is.:look: Its not for me.

Yeah, the only way i would wear cornrows is underneath a good a weave, otherwise i won't!!!!

Not everyone looks good with cornrows, just like some people don't look good with buns or updos.

But, that does not make the style ghetto - just not suited for all.

I look cute in cornrows, if I must say so myself.

Cornrows have been my main protective style simply because I do them myself and I always get compliments on my hair. there are entirely too many way to do cornrows for them to ever go out of style IMHO.
