I'm considering cutting products with silicones in them out of my regimen. For those that don't use cones please list the products that products that you use- (shampoos, deep conditioners, daily moisterizers etc...) I find it very hard to find products that don't have any cones in them.

Also can you explain what benefits you saw in your hair after you stopped using cones?

I am wondering if not using cones helps you retain more moisture....

Shampoo - I use anita grants peppermint shampoo bar
Deep Conditioner - Naked boost
Daily moisturiser - Shea butter, Sheamoisture, Nubian heritage papaya and coconut oil lotion

I'm also starting to migrate to using more indian powders.

I've found my hair actually feels moisturised rather than coated, and sticky.

here are my staples. I try to have 3 main ones of each catagory just for back-up. I may be changing some of them b/c the majority are from online sources and im trying to save money.

The benefits:
I can tell a GREAT difference in the way my hair is moisturized (oils and moisturizing sprays vs. cones). It takes and holds moisture a whole lot better and i can really see why my hair was so dry before...the cones were preventing REAL moisture from nourishing my hair. My curls are much more defined and my hair is easier to detangle and a lot more manageable. I can tell my hair loves them

Cones made my hair feel very hard and crunchy all the time, as well as dry. It's not as easy to find coneless products locally but very easy online. Here are my favorites, I have reviews for each on my blog. I'm also starting to love Afroveda products which are not on my list yet, but as about to tbe.

For daily moisture, I use Elasta QP Mango Butter or Hairveda Whipped Cream.

DCs: Hairveda Sitrinillah, Shescentit Banana Brulee, ORS Replenishing Pak

Co-washes: anything V05 or Suave

I do still use some cones tho, when I wear my hair straight (I use a shine serum or shine spray as a final step). And I think my detanglers contain cones too, come to think of it

I don't poo which is one of the major reasons I don't use cones.

I cowash with V05 mostly but expirement with lots of cheapies and anything cone free. I like Giovanni, Desert Essences, Taliah Waajid, random $1 store finds.

I use henna, caramel treatments, yogurt/honey/bananas, or one of the above conditioners for deep conditioning.

I had chronically dry hair until I stopped shampooing and using cones. I sometimes use dimethicone because it can be cowashed out.

I recently did a 30 day no cone challenge for myself to see how my hair would respond to not using cones. Well it turned out my hair stays moisturized longer and it is softer.

My hair doesn't feel coated and if it does get a little dry, it does not become as hard as it once did. I don't need to co-wash because that would probably be too much moisture.

I still have a lot of my cone filled products and some of them I really love and will hate to give them up.

My current no cone products are:

Shampoo
Giovanni Smooth As Silk Shampoo
Naked Naturals Citrus & Keratin Shampoo (on hand)

Conditioners
Trader Joe's Nourish Spa (Love this! So moisturizing)
Suave Tropical Coconut
UBH Conditioner (protein heavy)
Giovanni Nutrafix Hair Reconstructor (medium protein)
Naked Naturals Citrus & Keratin Conditioner (on hand)
Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner

Leave In
Giovanni Direct Leave In
Mane N Tail Moisturizing Texturizer Conditioner
Giovanni Vitapro Fusion Leave In (medium protein)
Chi Keratin Mist Spray

My leave in conditioners are also my moisturizers. I usually mix conditioner with water for conditioner water.

Styling Products
Ecostyler Gel
Elasta QP Glaze

Oils if needed:
Coconut Oil
Castor Oil
Olive Oil

**My regimen is protein heavy but it works for me.

I think that has cones in it.

I had chronically dry hair until I stopped shampooing and using cones. I sometimes use dimethicone because it can be cowashed out.

According to this article, dimethicone is NOT water soluble. Dimethicone copolyol is water soluble. Both of them are found in ORS replenishing pak.

ORS replenishing pak ingredients:
Water Aqua, Soybean Oil Glycine Soja, Glycerine, Olive Oil Olea Europaea, Hydrolyzed Collagen , Quaternium-80 , DMDM Hydantoin, Amino Silk Acid, Dimethicone Copolyol, Orange Oil Citrus Aupantium Dulcis, D'Limonene , Panthenol Vitamin B5, Dimethicone , EDTA, Chamomile Extract Anthemis Nobilis, Sage Extract Salvia Officinalis, Nettle Extract Urtica Dioica, Rosemary Extract Rosmarinus Officinalis , Aloe Vera Gel Aloe Barbedensis , Yarrow Extract Achilea Millefolium, Kiwi Extract Actinidia Chinensis, Polyquaternium-37, Trideceth-7, Triethanolamine, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Methylchlorosothiazolinone , Methylchlorothiazolinone, Yellow No. 6 CI 15985, Yellow No. 5 CI 19140

I had to speak up because ORS replenshing pak and its friend dimethicone were responsible for the set back of Nov. 2008. Cones really like to build up in my hair causing it to be sticky and fuse together. I get tangles from root to tip. Detangling sessions can take hours upon hours. Cutting out cones has really been a blessing for me.

Here's what I use now:
Co wash - VO5 moisture milk
Clarifying - VO5 clarifying conditioner
Deep condish - aubrey organics or Lekair cholesterol shea butter
Detangling - Kinky Curly Knot Today or Just For Me 2-in-1 detanglign leave in conditioner
Spritz - African Royale Braid Spray
Sealant - 50:50 mix of shea butter and coconut oil

Bumping...are the cone-free moisturizers good for relaxed hair? Also, are any of the recommended brands available in stores or online only?

Most of the Suave condishes I've seen in the stores have cones. I know that their Humectress, the Damage conditioner, the Matrix dupe (orange bottle), and the conditioner for color-treated hair all have cones.

I use the Tropical Coconut, which is cone-free. I think all of the Suave Naturals condishes are cone-free. HTH

I use the Humectress and this does not have cones , not any that end in cone anyway which ones do you see? Don't most silicones end in "cone"

I looked it up online, and it says the 4th ingredient is dimethicone. Many of the other Suave formulas also contain Dimethiconol, which is a similar silicone that's not water soluble.

Korres Rice Protein--Serum -- Smells funny, it doesn't stink though
Belengenza SpotLite Shine--Serum--Smells delicious

I have a new cone-free product that I am absolutely in LOVE with. It's the Moku Hair Serum from Komaza.

Moku is a new line for Komaza that's meant for all hair types including relaxed. All of the products contain a lacto-ceramide. The Moku Serum is perfect for moisturizing and smoothing flat-ironed hair without weighing it down.

My favorite use of the serum is as a flat iron cream. I usually part my hair into 5 or 6 sections, add 1-2 pumps per section, then seal with Sabino before I iron. This gives me super-soft, moisturized lustrous results.

Here are some of mine. I would experience a lot of hard, crunchy hair, as well as dryness and premature buildup when using cones.

LHCF Thread - List of Cone Free Conditioners

I use poo bars - KBB juicy Beauty Bar is my fave right now (if you are going cone and sulfate free, check your water. Most sulfate-free products don't work as well in hard water. I had to get a shower filter and that helped me with how the products performed on my hair.)

Good Point! I live in N. Fl and the water here is HARD!:wallbash: Do you use a filter and would a PUR filter suffice?
