Concerns about using MN long term

How long do you plan to use Miconazole Nitrate?

I just want to express some concerns. I've been reading about the use of MN.. and I was very curious. I've considered using it myself.. but

SOme people may say that they will use MN because it is safe to be used on our most prized and delicate area of our bodies... but even when that is necessary, it's supposed to be used for 3 to 7 days MAX!! NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD USE MICONAZOLE NITRATE IN THEIR VJAYAY DAILY FOR 3 MONTHS OR LONGER!?! RIGHT?!?! :nono: So why do we use that logic to convince ourselves that it's ok to use on our heads for that long?

Ok, it obviously isn't a poison when used as directed... but long term, it probably is (again, this is why it's only prescribed or recommended to be used for a max of 3 to 7 days!) It may be ok to use it temporarily on your scalp - at a lower concentration- for the length of time that its prescribed elsewhere.. but using it more frequently than that just might cause more harm than good. Our bloodstream could become toxic and irreparable damage to be done to our LIVER.:perplexed

I know, I know, with such great results.. we don't want to believe that it's causing us any harm - especially when we can't FEEL any MAJOR or immediate side effects (slight headaches, for those who get them, may not be that much of a problem to us) But ladies, please think twice about using this looooong term! I'd say 1 month max for a serious problem area.. (nape or bald spot)... but then discontinue use. Of course, this is just my humble opinion. Take it or leave it!

Good luck, God Bless, and cheers to HEALTH and nappyness!! :)

Its cousin ketaconazole can be used for two months at a time then you take a break or use if the problem comes back. I'm sure mn can be used on your scalp the same way. I am not a doctor though so I don't know for sure about long tern mn use.

I tried using it over a year ago and immediately got headaches. 2 days and I was done. My theory is, anything that causes me pain can not be good.

I voted use occasionally, but I actually one use it a couple of weeks at a time, every other day or so, just because I usually wash so much that there isn't time for applications of MN to sit on my scalp. At first I was getting on myself about slacking with MN, especially since I proclaimed it would be a key ingredient for my success in the "Get An Inch Every Month" challenge. Now I actually think it's a good thing that my use of MN isn't too regular for side effect reasons and also for concern of possibly making my body resistant to MN's antifungal properties should I need it "down there" for its intended purpose LOL. Like almost anything else in life, from agua to alcohol, its possible to overdo and cause harm. Moderation! And as far as my hair growth, I've been getting dynamite results since I started wet bunning in December - at least 2 inches - and my MN use has been spotty at best.

The longest Ive used it was 2 months. I usually whip it out when Im feeling down about my progress or have had a setbeck... but never longer than 2 months. Ive never experienced any issues with it.

I've been using it on and off since 2006/7. I think I've gotten good growth since then but a lot has been cut off. I see the genuine concern but may stop using it after this year (hopefully).

I agree with your concerns OP. That's why I leave all of those strange growth aides (MN, megatek, etc.) alone. Sulfur is okay, but i'm afraid of that other stuff.

I agree. My hair will grow when it grows. all i need to focus on it retaining length and i'm good to go. I'm in no hurry

I remember this thread. I actually stopped using MN though I have been tempted to do it again. If I do use growth aids in future I will try for more natural sulfur-based one.

Sulfur is a tried and true method that dates back to Madame C.J. Walker (she became the first black woman millionaire patenting the relaxer AND her sulfur growth aid :) ). I haven't heard of anyone having problems with sublimed sulfur as long as it's properly diluted.

I have used megatek as a rinse because it's virtually the same ingredients as Ovation Cell Therapy, which is what doctors give to post-chemo cancer patients to speed hair growth. I just don't like rubbing things into my scalp in general, and megatek is too expensive for me to be buying up all the time anyway.

I do TONS of research before I try anything on my hair anyway. I'm such a natural girl through and through, and I've found that the earth often produces what you need right out of the ground (oils, butters, powders). I don't really need anything more. If your instinct is telling you not to do something, you probably shouldn't do it.

You've prompted me to do some reasearch OP. I found some pics of Madame CJ walker before and after she used her growth oil... To think all this time I thought she only invented the hot comb! http://www.perfectlocks.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Madam_CJ_Walker.bmp

I SAID sulfur is okay.:perplexed

I think most of the time they say don't use something longer than recommended is because they don't want you trying to treat something and you end up having something else.

Say you're wondering why you're using this medicine for a yeast infection but it's not going away. Meanwhile, you had another type of infection that went untreated. Same with headache stuff.
