...what is a good product that can be used for holding comb coils, prefably not gel because my hair hates gel!

Ummmm, you don't want to hear gel, huh? I got nuthin' then.
 
I like the buttercreme from miss jessie's. it's heavy enough to hold theshape, but isn't a gel. I think it depends how long you want to keep your hair like that though. If you want to to last awhile you'll probably need something heavy. do comb coild when I'm looking for killer definition, so I usually just leave them in over night or until they're dry, so I don't use any real heavy products, like I can usually just get away with some hair milk, and it'll give me a very soft hold. If the coils are pretty easy to form then as long as you let them dry you should be alright for hold. Try sitting under the dryer, and clamp the roots with clips so they get stretched.
 
Barry Fletcher's Curling Custard. Don't get too heavy handed b/c it tends to flake but it has excellent hold. Check out my fotki and comb coils in February to see the results from it.
