Is one better than the other for sealing in moisture? And should it be refined or unrefined?

Unrefined. That means it's pure and no heat has been used to extract the oil so nothing is lost due to too much heat. EVOO(olive oil) is heavier than coconut oil. Much heavier. Coconut oil is easily absorbed. Soooooo, if you want maximum coverage for a longer time, use EVOO. If you don't plan on washing your hair that day use coconut oil. It seals but gets absorbed much quicker. This is just from my hair experiences, maybe someone else has something different....

I feel the same. My hair doesn't like EVOO but it LOVES coco! EVOO is evoo to my hair :nono:

I just got a lesson on unrefined. Thanks. I knew it was better but not exactly why. I know refined is a "knock off" ...kinda, not really. Just that refined coco is called copra or something like that and its not good.

Wow Naturalgurl this was very informative!

Coconut oil penetrates the best... but I guess the question was really about sealing..:look:

I don't know if that's good or bad. I spend a lot of time here and I have so much oils and other stuff for my hair at home! My friends say I have a problem.:lachen:

Are you kidding?! I know I must have an obsession. But everyone on this site does. That's why it's lhcf . I'm right at home. But for real I do spend enough time on this site.. Mercy

I just bought coconut oil. . . it seems like it would do much more for me in the summer. it smells nice, and it it is very light, but I need something industrial strength right now. evoo has been giving me the seal i need in the winter. . . walkin across campus from 8am-5pm. i need SOMETHING to cut on that wind damage. but like they said evoo is heavy. . . maybe I like heavy. . . for my rollersets, I set with a little evoo and a little castor oil. but it takes FOREVER for my rollersets to dry with it. . . but i do them early at night so by work/class time I am good to go.

Cieramichele, to be honest I wasn't aware of the diff. until now. I think I'm leaning toward the coconut oil. A lady was telling me that the best moisturizer was water sealed with olive oil. So now I have all these questions. thanks for your suggestion.

This is something to consider. Thanks Belle!

I like them both for general usage on my hair but if I had to choose one for sealing my ends, I would choose organic virgin coconut oil because it is lighter and it does not weigh my hair down like evoo. I really like Dabur Vatika oil for sealing too:lick: (Indian coconut oil). YUM YUM!!!

I have Dabur Vatika oil!! I was not sure if it was effective as reg coconut or olive oil. I'm still doing my research. Which do you prefer?

I love using coconut oil. For a while i'd been using Dabur Vatika oil but I think the fragrance is a little distracting. I'm going to try the organic virgin coconut oil next b/c it actually smells good.

Regular coconut oil is better for overall growth and physical health, but I like the vatika because it's ayurveda and I mix it in with my Indian hair oils for pre-pooing.

ETA: I never order too much of the vatika oil at one time because of it's organic nature, it has a tendency to spoil and the smell will be a little off andif this happens, you know it's not good anymore. So I have a solution now - I put a few drops of essential oils in my vatika oil now to prevent it spoiling on me too quikly and because I use it as a pre-poo it helps to stimulate my scalp overnight before my wash days.

So what about using plain ol olive oil and not EVOO? Since the EVOO is so heavy. I'm just trying to pick the right sealant. But coconut oil sounds good and seems to be the winner. Any opinions?

you're welcome.

EVOO gives me moisture like none other but coconut oil gives incomparable shine. Olive oil has given me better results on wet hair and coconut oil has given better results on dry hair.

I say, if you use evoo, you'd have to put it on VERY lightly. You'll have to practice getting the right amount. Add a drop or two to your hands and rub them together. Apply it to sections of different widths and find out what works for you.

Interesting and good point. I'm so glad to get help from you all!!

Ladies, an MD/PhD woman told me how much her hair grew when she used water and sealed with olive oil. She only used regular olive oil and not EVOO. So on wet hair I guess olive oil would be better since it is heavier than coconut oil. What do you guys think?

I choose virgin coconut oil hands down. I love my tropical oils. But olive oil is good for heavy conditioning treatments.

I use EVOO on my DC because it's so heavy...but I mix up EVOO, Coco Oil, and Sweet Almond Oil up together as my moisturizer.

Coconut oil has been a lifesaver for my hair. I use it for pre-poo treatments, during my deep conditioning and after the rollerset for moisture and additional shine. I can't live without the stuff.
