I'm interested in wearing wigs again as my main PS but I'm afraid of people asking about them :hide: :look: I used to wear them in my sophomore year of high school, after I shaved my head completely. I would wear wigs for variety and occasionally rock my low cut. Once I started living with my dad in South Carolina I gave up wigs completely, though.

I usually do my own box braids and twisted styles with extensions, but:
- I don't have access to my hair to DC and thoroughly wash whenever I want
- No matter how well I moisturize by using minimal product, I STILL get buildup by the time I take down my style.
-Sulfur oiling my scalp becomes annoying when I have to do it sections by section. If I could wear cornrows beneath a wig it would make my life easier
-I could hide my hair as much as I want and not have to worry about taking such long breaks in between PS' just because I'm feeling lazy.

I work with kids in an after school problem, and they have no problem asking me about my hair and making comments

How do you handle people's questions about your wigs ladies? And what do you do in cases where a person is trying to insult you because you wear them?

I've been wearing wigs to PS during my long-term stretch/transition (still undecided). It's the best PS choice for me because unlike bunning or extension braids, there is no tension at all on my hair and I can look styled & polished in every environment I'm in, which is important with my lifestyle at this point in time. And unlike a weave, again, no tension, don't have to worry about blending and I can have full access to my hair with ease.

If you are really conscious about how others will perceive you wearing wigs then my suggestion is to try to get one that looks as natural as possible in regards to length, texture and style. I opt for wigs that are close to the length of my hair, or shorter. Most people think it's mine, some maybe think it's a sew-in or are just aren't sure what's going on but rarely if ever does someone guess its a wig. Even females who I feel like will see it and just know what's up will compliment my hair or ask who did it or where I got it done.

If you go for a toned-down natural look (not that dramatic of a change) then the children may not even notice enough to ask.

Great Thread. Im interested in wearing full head wigs too, and im nervous about the "looks" from people, looking at me like look at her with that big wig on her head. I just want a wig that doesnt look shiny and wiggy without paying an arm and a leg. Wigs seem like they would make taking care of my hair sooo much easier right now.

I tend to wear the same wig for weeks at a time. To me, it's like wearing a weave and people are less likely to ask about it after a day or two. They usually just say they like the style or comment that I changed my hair. I guess I'm frontin' like my wig is a weave but it works for me. LoL

I have worn wigs as a protective style since the summer started and I just don't try to pretend. I kind of make fun of myself. I try my best to get wigs that don't look "wiggy", but at the end of the day-who cares? It is not like my hair is short underneath and if people ask, I tell the truth. There's nothing they can do about it. Only once was there a really embarrasing moment. I am a teacher and my wig fell off while I was lecturing in class. After that, I really did not care. I found that for the most part, no one else cares either.

SvelteVelvet Thanks for your input. Yea, I like knowing that I'll wake up everyday without having to worry about how my hair looks. I mostly plan to get shoulder length wigs (my real hair is SL/CBL) So hopefully people will just think I straightened my natural hair? Either way I want some variety in my life and I think wigs might be the answer.

MzSwift Lol that's what I want to do! Wear 1 wig for a month or two, then switch to another wig (the way people would do with weaves). I'm not tryna be like those people who change their wig every week-not that there's anything wrong with that, I just want to keep the secret of my perfectly coiffed hair to myself.

I don't wear wigs, never have...but I'll be truthful and say that most wigs, like 95% are painfully obvious. Sometimes I walk in a room with a lot of black women and mentally I'm like...wig, wig, wig, sew-in, wig...I can tell right away.

I'm saying this to say that if you want to wear one, wear it, especially if it will help you reach your goals. Just be aware that people can tell, even if they don't say anything. Maybe you can wear a half wig? But, then you'll have an issue with blending.

Even the wigs people pretend look like 4a/b hair have perfect, shiny ringlets that don't look like natural hair to me. The best I've seen is Bridezilla Martina's lacefront tutorials on YouTube. She is also a member here.

As far as the kids, tell them to mind their own business! Lol when I used to wear an occasional sew-in, it would be really awkward explaining it to my students. That was years ago and I haven't really worn a weave since.

Try some wigs on in the BSS. I find synthetic wigs are the most noticeable. Certain brands are a bit more consistent and realistic than others.
Use YT to get an idea of the construction, style and fit of the wig. However, it is harder for me to determine quality and longevity of wigs from YT.

Try one out on the weekend or during vacation to get used to it before sporting it to work.
If possible buy human hair wigs.

I wear a wig as a protective style to work on a daily basis. On weekends, only way I'm wearing a wig is if I was in too much of a hurry to do my hair, but that's not common on a weekend. I work with white people who compliment my "hair" all of the time and say I look like Nia Long and Halle Berry, LOL. So my wig must be doing something right.

I have worn it around black folk and when they asked me about cutting my hair, I told them flat out it was a wig. I always wear the same one, it's very short like Nia Long's trademark style, it's cheap and it's human hair. If you find something that compliments your look and you rock it with confidence, who cares what people think? You are wearing this for YOU so you can give your hair the TLC it needs. People will always have something to say, so make sure you look fly while they're talking.

I wear wigs (lace and half wigs) as my main protective style but honestly, I rather have people think my wigs are sew-ins (which they do since I would wear the same wig for two months) than an actual wig. When someone ask about my hair, I actually do tell them its a wig though which they are mostly surprised. I say if any1 is going to wear one, at least put some effort to make it look nice as possible.
