If I use one, do I need the other? I read that a few people use a claryfying condit (e.g. VO5 Kiwi & Lime). Is this in place of a clarifying shampoo? Im confused...

When I use a clarifying shampoo, I follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. I don't even own any clarifying conditioners.

i don't own a clarifying conditioner either. imo "clarifying conditioner" is a contradicting thing to read on a bottle. cause a conditioner might be very very light but it will coat your hair no matter what, cause that is the purpose of it. please correct me if i'm wrong here.
so i think that a conditioner would never do the job of clarifying as well as a clarifying shampoo. you can do a test and let us know what you think. i'm sure your hair will fell completely different if you use the shampoo and then on another day try the conditioner. as i said, this is just a new title they came up with to make more money.

This is just my opinion, so please don't pelt me with tomatoes...hehehe

With a clarifying shampoo, I would follow that with a moisturizing shampoo, then complete my usual routine.

With a clarifying conditioner, I would use my regular shampoo, use the clarifying conditioner, then follow that with a moisturizng conditioner.

Basically, I can count the number of times in my life I've done any type of clarifying. In place of a clarifying conditioner marketed as such, I have simply added some lemon juice to my regular moisturizing conditioner. That works extremely well, at least for me, with none of the worries about stripping.

Frankly, I think the clarifying conditioners are just another option and probably appeal most to people who have oily hair.

I agree Jade. I think clarifying conditioners are basically marketed for oily scalps and hair. Sometimes type 1 finehaireds who chemically process (like with color) need some conditioning but can't use the rich conditioners that are usually manufactured for chemically treated hair or risk looking like an oil slick. The use of the word "clarifying" makes a definite sunconscious dsitinction between themselves and other conditioners but IMO is misleading - simply because it connotes a type of cleansing, which depending on what you believe about conditioners is questionable.

They are to me, in the same family as "weightless" and "sheer" conditioners. Basically for oily heads who are looking for a conditioner geared to thier needs.

Funny you should ask

Let me recommend Deep Cleansing Shampoo by Lanza. It uses Tea Lauryl Sulphate which is apparently much gentler but still effective. Your hair won't feel 'stripped dry' either which I love about it and it makes your conditioner work a bit better on me. It also contains other goodies including Keratin, extracts of comfrey, nettle, lavender oil etc. Its really good.

Check www.lanza.com to read more on it. You'd need to do a location search to see what place nearest your zip has it
