I don't go to any yet (currently on a no heat challenge)... But here are two of them I found... that I WILL be going to come this spring ;)

The first one, scroll down to "Illinois"... I found it in the Latina magazine

http://www.latina.com/latina/fandb/fandb.jsp?genre=ourskinourhair&article=dominicanhairsalons

I know right. You can't beat $15 bucks. You would think that includes washing but maybe not the deep conditioning. I'll call and check and post in a minute.

Dominicans are known for that.... that's why some women LOVE going. B/c you get super straight, silky, shiny "upscale salon"-looking hair for like $20 TOPS! Regular black salons will charge like $35-40 for a wash and blow dry, and half the time it looks like you could have done the same or better job at home! :ohwell:

Okay, so I called and I got the answering machine. The chick was talking in spanish. I am not bilingual and didn't know what the hell she said so I did not leave a message:lol: . I'll try calling another day and letcha know.

Did you check both salons, or just the one in the first link I posted?

WARNING....I went to that Family Salon in Illinois before I joined LHCF two years ago. The owner did my hair in her basement. It was in the summer, I'll never forget. She didn't want to rollerset my hair (that's why I went to her in the first place). I told her that I didn't want any blowdrying. She kept telling me that she wouldn't use much heat. Well, all I know if that she used a lot of heat from the roots of my hair to the ends. Then had the nerves to hold the curling iron on the ends of my hair of my hair until it it frizzled (while talking to her daughter). When I got home, I didn't have any curls, but I did have some messed up ends. I have to go to my regular stylist and have her cut off an inch of my hair. I had just had a relaxer two weeks prior to this mishap.

Never again. If they won't roll your hair, then don't let them do your hair.

Daaaaaaaaang! That's messed up. Thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll try the other salon.

I went to Ella y El. Cristina did my hair. I was VERY happy with it. I had her do a rollerset and blowout. She charged me $20. The most I saw her charge was $25 or $30 (I can't remember for certain) and that girl's hair was super curly and to her waist.

They don't speak a lot of English, but they do speak enough for you to get your hair done without having to resort to sign language.

I can't speak for the other lady in there, but Cristina is WONDERFUL. She told me that she might be moving to another location, though. I don't know whether she did or not.

Awww man! How long ago was this? I actually called earlier today and you were right-they sure don't speak very much English. I tried to ask questions but the only thing she understood was what time they closed:lol: . I'll try calling again tomorrow to see if she's still there.

It was about 9 months ago. Try asking for Cristina and see what happens.

I speak a little Spanish and can find out if she's still there for you. I already tried calling this morning, but no answer (9:30 am).

I went to a salon about two weeks ago. I love the results and I must admit between the blowdrying, flat ironing and curling, it is a lot of heat. It was my first time going so I was kind of siked. I went yesterday to get a wash and layer cut at my regular salon. As soon a the water hit my hair, I could literally smell all the heat from my hair. It was a mixture of products and a somewhat burnt smell.

That's the hair pays to look shiny and bouncy. I had my experience and I can say I loved my hair afterwards but honestly it wasn't a mind blowing experience that would send me back. I'll stick with my regular stylist, at least she knows about what products work best for my black hair.

Where'd you go?

Ahmed's is an Egyptian shop, not Dominican. I don't care for Egyptian blowouts, either. Or Dominican blowouts, for the matter. Your hair WILL end up fried.

At Ella y El, I got a rollerset and blowout (roots only) so it was much less heat. But, I can only speak for Cristina - that's who did my hair.
