The Unclean Woman

By Joyce Catherwood

Mark 5:21-42

People cautiously stepped aside when I walked by. Most were disgusted by my presence. I was the unclean woman. For 12 years I suffered from a hemorrhage of blood. Anyone who touched me or touched anything I touched, was considered unclean until evening, then required to wash their clothes and bathe with water.

Initially, a few had pity on me, willing to perform the rituals after having contact with me. But that quickly grew tiresome for my family and friends. Plus, there was the lingering foul odor and untidiness of it all. It was easier for people to avoid me. Doctors didn’t know how to treat my disease and often the "cure" was humiliating and painful, worse than the illness. The cost of treatments left me in poverty. I felt abandoned and useless.

Then Jesus arrived in our town. The afflicted and hopeless whispered his name with deep affection. He offered healing of mind and body and soul, a new beginning. I dreamed of being whole again, doing the normal things women do.

I searched the neighborhoods and found Jesus surrounded by men, women and children, all wanting to see his face, to receive healing and a promise of better things. My heart soared. I was caught up in the excitement and decided if I could just touch his garment, somehow that would be enough.

Then I noticed Jairus, a prominent synagogue leader, was with Jesus. They were on their way to Jairus’ house because his daughter was dying. My hopes shattered. Touching Jesus’ clothing as I planned would render him ritually impure and he would not be allowed to enter Jairus’ home. But I was desperate and instantly convinced myself he wouldn’t know who touched him. As he passed by, I stooped down and reached for him, barely touching the fringe of his robe. I felt a surge of healing and strength! Breathless, I struggled to my feet and backed away.

Jesus immediately asked: "Who touched me?" I froze. He repeated the question. I wanted to run but instead fell at his feet, terrified because he had caught me. Sobbing and choking on my words, I poured out my story.

There was no rebuke, no scolding for delaying and defiling him. Instead Jesus praised my faith and said, "Take heart, daughter, you are free from your suffering!" But as he spoke, a servant ran up with the news that Jairus’ little girl had died. I swallowed hard, thinking I had selfishly delayed Jesus, causing a synagogue ruler’s only child to die. I feared retribution from Jairus, but Jesus reassured him, saying: "Don’t be afraid. Just believe." Soon after, Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead! The master graciously delivered us both!

What a glorious time I had returning to normal living. No more hiding in the shadows. No more shame and rejection. For the first time in 12 years, I embraced life and all those around me! •

As an “unclean” woman she was unwelcome in society (LEV 15:19-30), i.e. socially isolated.
Everything and everyone she touched became ceremonially unclean, so she would have been shunned by everyone, even family.
Sexual relations would have been unclean, her bed and even her husband would have been ceremonially unclean, so she probably would have been divorced by her husband (DEU 24:1).
Worship in the synagogue would have been barred to her since she could not make atonement or her blood flow (LEV 15:28-30).
As an “unclean” woman if she touched Jesus, under normal circumstances, she would make Him ceremonially “unclean.”
As a woman she was restricted from touching a man in public

Who was she? When did she live? Where did she live?
Who were her people? How old was she?
What did she do?

She suffered:
She had been bleeding for 12 years.
Chronic loss of blood probably meant anemia and physical weakness for her.
She had endured medical “cures” (vs. 26).
She had suffered under medical treatments.
She had consulted many doctors.
She was hopelessly incurable: she had only grown worse under the doctors’ care.
She was destitute: she had spent all she had.

She Was Earnest:
She had “heard” about Jesus (MAR 5: 27).
Others had been healed by Jesus in Galilee through touching Him (LUK 6:19).
She believed that Jesus could heal her: she said over and over,
“If I only touch His cloak I’ll be healed” (MAT 9:20).
“If I just touch His clothes, I’ll be healed” (MAR 5:28).
She was willing to break social taboos.
She was willing to hope in Jesus:
She believed Jesus would help her, even though she interrupted Him as He on His way to heal the mortally ill daughter of Jairus, a synagogue leader and man of social prominence.

She reached out to Him:
a) “She came up…”
(Perhaps she had to force her way through the crowd after she heard about Him?)
b) “She came up behind Jesus…”
(Perhaps she could only reach His back? Or was she too shy to face Him?)
c) She “touched the edge of His cloak...”possibly to one of the two tassels on the corners of the shimla hanging down His back. (Perhaps she almost missed Him?)
d) She touched Jesus’ cloak...

Jesus received her:Jesus knew “in His spirit” (MAR 2:8) both her need and her touch. (Luke says Jesus “noticed” her, Mark that He saw her.)
Jesus did not heal all who touched Him in the crowd.
Jesus perceived her secret touch.
Jesus was willing to heal her:
Jesus controlled His power—power did not automatically flow from Him or from His clothing—and He “responded by letting His power go out to heal her” (Lenski, Interpretation of St. Mark’s Gospel, Mark 5:30, pg. 223).
b) Jesus allowed touch to produce the healing, though He did not need to touch anyone or to be touched by anyone to effect a healing.

Jesus saved her from her affliction:
Jesus healed her body by His power immediately and completely:
“And the woman was healed from that moment” (MAT 9:22).
“Immediately her bleeding stopped …” (MAR 5:29).
nd immediately her bleeding stopped” (LUK 8:48).
“She felt in her body that she had was free from her suffering” (MAR 5:29).
She knew “what had happened to her” (MAR 5:33).

Jesus restored her social standing:
He made a public declaration that power had gone out for healing--
Jesus said, ‘Someone touched Me; I know that power has gone out from Me’” (LUK 8:46).
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched My clothes?’ …But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it” (MAR 5:30,32).
He made her publicly confess her healing:
*“In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Him and how she had been instantly healed” (LUK 8:47).
* “Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at His feet and, trembling with fear, told Him the whole truth” (MAR 5:33).

He made a public declaration of that she was healed:
Daughter, your faith has healed you” (MAR 5:34).
Jesus cared for her feelings:
Jesus relieved her fears: “Then the woman…came and fell at His feet and, trembling with fear…” (MAR 5:33).

WHY WOULD SHE BE AFRAID?
She recognized that she was in the presence of God?
She was afraid of rebuke?
She was afraid that her previously embarrassing condition would be made public?

* Jesus reassured her with the words, “Take heart” (MAT 9:22).
* Jesus addressed her as “daughter,” (MAT 9:22; MAR 5:34), an expression of “love and concern” (Lenski).
b) Jesus blessed her, “Go in peace”(MAR 5:34; LUK 8:48).
c) Jesus assured her that the affliction would not return with the words, “Be freed from your suffering” (MAR 5:34).

What can we learn from her?

1. Jesus honors our faith, however small.
2. Jesus is approachable in every circumstance.
3. Jesus has compassion on the needy who come to Him in faith.
4. Jesus sometimes allows circumstances to enter our lives that reduce us to desperation so that we will reach out for Him.

Memory verse: “If look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God “(PRO 2:4,5).

Look below....what came in my inbox today~~~
but first review the post that was mine and SuperNova's post from Saturday...

When do we start? What do you need me to do? I like your list. To add to it

I was thinking the 12th of each month..if that's okay and to start with the hemmoraging woman...only because today in my churches Spa for Soul Day from and for the Women's Ministry.....she ironically was highlighted and the discussion was on the number 12...for the years ..she was in need of healing ....it seemed not a coincidence...that it came right in time for this

Introduction
Mark 5:21-43:
At the request of a local synagogue official named Jairus, Jesus sets out to visit a young girl who is extremely sick. Along the way, a woman with a persistent hemorrhage presses through the crowd surrounding Jesus in order to touch his clothes and is healed upon doing so.

Today's Scripture: Mark 5:34
34Jesus said to her, "My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your trouble."

25There was a woman who had suffered terribly from severe bleeding for twelve years, 26even though she had been treated by many doctors. She had spent all her money, but instead of getting better she got worse all the time. 27She had heard about Jesus, so she came in the crowd behind him, 28saying to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will get well."

29 She touched his cloak, and her bleeding stopped at once; and she had the feeling inside herself that she was healed of her trouble. 30At once Jesus knew that power had gone out of him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

31His disciples answered, "You see how the people are crowding you; why do you ask who touched you?"

32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33The woman realized what had happened to her, so she came, trembling with fear, knelt at his feet, and told him the whole truth. 34 Jesus said to her,

"My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your trouble."

Reflect

How would you have felt if you were a member of Jairus' family when the entourage was interrupted by the woman with the hemorrhage? How would you have responded when you heard Jesus say that the young girl was only sleeping? Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt as desperate as the woman with the hemorrhage? What did you do?

PRAISE GOD!!!!!!! As I was reading your initial posts, I felt the spirit moving because although I had never identified much with the hemorraging woman, I identified with her today. She is me. I am a single mother and many people see me as unclean, unworthy, and some people even stay away. . .But God has forgiven me, healed me,and wiped my tears away. I am worthy, I am loved, and nothing that has happened has been a mistake, It is all a part of a plan. God's plan and I will be used as an example of the healing and redemptive power that the touch of Jesus holds within himself that even exuded out to his cloak.

ETA: As far as the faith of the woman, I find it interesting that she wasn't afraid to push past everyone and "touch" them in order to make her way toward Jesus. I had also never considered the fact that her issue would defile Jesus, but it didn't of course, because he is Jesus and his blood doesn't just cover things up like the sacrafices of the Old Testament, but it actually cleans us and purifies us. The woman didn't let anyone stand in her way, even if that meant being ridiculed. This reminds me of what my pastor reminds us of which is that you can't get right on your own in order to come to Jesus. Come as you are. I had never considered the fact that Jesus(God) being all knowing, probably knew exactly who touched him, but still he asked so that she would have to confess aloud.

Re: CF Women of the Month..Two of faith..One touched Jesus's Robe & One touched his h

Here's what came up for me...today....There are no coincidences

Joel Osteen did a sermon on this woman and what keeps coming back to me
is what he said and I believe it true for me ...for us

paraphrasing him.....

I pictured her pushing thorugh the crowds saying ...excuse me ..but this is MY seaon
Pardon me ...but...... it is my Season

my own question or reflection
where or what have I been hemoragging for the past 12 years
my pastor said on Woman's Spa Day..the number 12 represents completeness
..the 12 disciples ..the twelve tribes...

there are no coincidences
it is OUR season
to be made whole ..in every area..
