Cathy Howse is one of the only people i could think of that have healthy hair but use heat so much-It was just the way i wrote the question

Was this before or after her "natural kick?" You know she is going natural now, and plans to write another book.

No direct heat! :whip: I use heat for deep conditions :D I'm really fighting the tempation to by a flat iron after seeing yalls hurs after using it:lol:

I will be/have been usinge my soft bonnet dryer :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: (finally got a new dryer after 15 years!!!) only once a week to do DC and rollersets.

Flatiron- once every 12 weeks after I relax the front/top section of my hair.
Blowdryer- once every three weeks when I wash my hair.

I usually air dry, but I will blow out and flat iron and/or curl for special occassions. So I'd say 2-3x a month some months (usually to keep the look up during that one week) , none during others.

I stopped using direct heat about 3 1/2 months ago. The only heat I use is from a hooded dryer once a week, for DCing. I tried Cathy Howse's method, but after some initial growth my hair stayed the same length for a while. I think the twice weekly heat was too much.

I started LHCF doing Cathy Howse's method, I just never did the heat from the beginning. I still use her method except I do buns and updos also. I picked out what I resonated with from her method.

I use heat one time a week: when I shampoo my hair. I use a blow dryer, but it's with a good comb attachment, and thermal protectaant mousse. And then I flat-iron with a glosser serum. It's two forms of heat, but since it's only once a week, it's fine.

The last time I used my flat iron was about 6 weeks ago, after my last relaxer and just before I joined this site. No direct heat since then. My plan is to only use a blowdryer or flat iron (if at all) after a relaxer touch-up, every 2-3 months.

The only time I get heat applied to my hair is when I go to the salon. Hven't been there in a month and don't plan on going back for at least 2 more.

This is EXACTLY what I did...I also started out with Cathy Howse but avoided the heat and just did buns.

Her new book is on advance order. Check it out.

Nice cover. But, I think thinning edges are caused by more than relaxers. I know too many people that relax that don't have thin edges. But, if this book was written like her last, she does not leave too much flexibility in her viewpoints.

I totally agree with you. I was natural for almost 3 years (2.5 years). I pressed my hair, and my edges thinned from that, not from all the years of relaxing. I still think there is a patch of hair that's way thinner (almost bald) because of the stress pressing took on my edges.

Since this cut, I flat iron once a week. Prior to the cut I would use heat sparingly, on avg once every 3 months or so.

I agree, relaxers are not the ONLY culprit for thin edges...I will check her book out though.
