This video is over 2 years old. I thought her hair was way longer than this. Her ends look thin too.

:) the health of the hair is BECAUSE of the product!? REALLY? lol... sounds as if she 's trying to push her product. of coarse she wants to sell it but all of us know that product doesnt cause miracle hair. its more technique than product. i'm not mad as her..... but i won't be buying any either.

Nonie I was referring to her hair in her newest video from Dec 2012. Still not up to "guru" standards, but it looks a lot better than the stringy hair in the op... Which I was getting ready to trash talk until My Friend pointed out the newer video. :look: She's made progress... Or maybe she just transfixed me with that creepy non-blinking stare. :nono:

Should somebody post that link in the natural considering bkt thread? I'm not sure if she's exaggerating, but she sure scared me! I had no idea that hair loss was a side effect. And the comments below are scary too.
 
She's funny. Only her mouth is moving. I want to see more videos from her.

So what do you guys think of her statements on Keratin Hair Treatments?
She has made me reconsider getting the non-formaldehyde formula. I was hoping to try it someday. She makes sense though.

Some of the comments are scary. People saying their hair fell out after the treatment. :cry2:

Wow! It sure does look better in the Dec. 26, 2012 video! :yep: Much thicker and longer.
 
I tried to watch and blink only at the same times she blinked... My eyes started watering.
I swear she only blinked twice in the whole video...
 
I didn't think her hair looked all that bad.

I do agree that her body language often seems stiff.

She doesn't clip her ends. She doesn't advocate trims as a necessary component for hair growth that's why her hair may look stringy once flat ironed. She says trims are more about aesthetic.

I use UBH. I've tried lots of other products. When I've used UBH consistently my hair improves and retains growth. I need to KISS and stop BCing.

vtoodler The major improvements I experienced over the years with consistent use of her methods were better retention and improved hair condition (stronger shiner hair, less fizz & splits). She doesn't advocate for the necessity of protective styling. My hair grew and I wore it out everyday.

My history with her products are on relaxed hair. The ten times I've bc'ed (don't judge me). I never came up with a consistent natural hair regimen. I'm just learning. Every time I returned to relaxing, I would incorporate her products and methods. Any hair mishaps were due to me neglecting my hair or bad self-relaxing experience.

Why I LIKE Cathy and always return to UBH: ( I've tried to find less expensive/ easily accessible alternatives... although nowadays her prices are reasonable)

  • I believe she was one of the first Black hair gurus to recommend to not over-process and to stretch relaxers to 10-12 weeks. This is was life changing for me when I was relaxed because I was kinkorexic. I relaxed my hair every 4 weeks from root to tip, which explained why it would break off and shed horribly. I'm surprised I had any hair lol.
  • She recommends using indirect heat (rollersets and hooded dryers).
  • She was one of the first to hone in on that our ahir needs moisture ( advocating washing hair with a ph balance moisturizing shampoo every 3 days to at most weekly).I see over the past year, she now added a shampoo to her product line.
  • She also speaks about the importance of protein for relaxed hair, oils to lubricate, and stimulation for growth. She created her own deep conditioner. My relaxed hair felt so strong after. I started using it this month on my natural hair and my hair is less frizzy and feels stronger too. ( not mushy from too much moisture).
  • She also was a big proponent of daily moisturizing. She created her light mist Dew spray and years later her creme moisturizer ( at the time the ones on the market that she at first recommended, like Always and Motions, had lots of mineral oil). My relaxed hair loved these leave-ins. My natural hair not so much. The creme doesn't seem to absorb as well, but I could probably try to use it differently- maybe for styling twist. When I put it on a damp fro to wear out, as a leave in, it looks "ashy".

    Recently, I tried to put it on flat ironed hair (my experiment on my 3 inch TWA). My hair coiled at the ends. I bought the huge 32oz tubs a year ago, so I have alot of it since I don't use it on my natural hair, sigh.

I don't agree with everything she advocates. I like even hair, but I don't trims are necessary for growth or retention with proper maintenance. I've grown hair cuts without any problems using her methods.

We can see here on the board that protective styling (i.e. bunning) can take you to longer lengths. Before she transitioned, many attributed her hair not growing past BSL (her hair may have been a bit longer- 1-2 inches past BSL) was due to her wearing her hair out and too much direct/indirect heat.

She and her models need to have their hair shaped/trimmed. There's no style, it's just there.

CurlyMoo i think her info is good but slightly out of date. There are new treatments out today that are formaldehyde/aldehyde free and contain amino acids. Some are marketed as bkt (such as qod organiq) and some are marketed as smoothing treatments (such as design essentials) most of the ladies on this board who use bkt have sucess with these treatments.
also you can modify application in order to keep the health of your hair

Sucess with bkt and smoothing treatments depends on the apllication. Dont get formula on scalp, dont use ridiculous amout of heat, do a test section if possible etc.

If you read her book, she talks about the need for nutrition and supplements to support hair growth. She created the products, of course she is going to market them.

I can share she is one of the first Black Women to create "quality" hair growth/retention products for us. When I started here in '02 she was the guide for many posters about proper hair care. Many used her regimen, products and then expanded from there. In the first edition of her book, she didn't have any products to sell, but gave readers a recipe for a stimulating protein DC that she later created. It used to circulate here on the board. I'm sure it's posted in an old Cathy Howse thread.

UBH are good, high quality products. Her site is loaded with testimonials and pictures of successful transitions from damaged hair to maintenance of healthy hair -relaxed and natural.

She knows her stuff!:grin:

ETA: She's changed her website since last year. She had the same website for the past 10 years and it's been updated.
