Just had a bad hair experience with cornrows because they broke my hair. They were also very small. I suggest making sure your hair is in good condition prior to getting the braids. Make sure the braids are not too tight. Use seabreeze when necessary to disinfect the scalp and use Profectiv'e new 3 in one phase oil on your scalp

I do my own braids and cornrows, so I can afford to mess em up. I do weekly to biweekly condition washes because I'm natural and my hair comes out very soft when I do.

I guess to preserve them you can use braid spray. I personally have never liked braid spray because I'm prone to dandruff.
