OK, crazy question... but... WHAT IS CARAMEL???
The caramel treatment is a great all natural homemade DC. Search for the thread "yum caramel" to learn all about it.
OP, the caramel and coconut work two different ways. Caramel is a moisturizing DC. It makes the hair really moisturized which causes it to be a little heaver and "hang" a bit more. Kind of like when your hair is wet with water, it stretches out. The moisture from caramel is great and I suggest using as a DC just for that. But, the original company used it before straightening because it made for a better flat iron.
The coconut/lime treatment works by way of lactic acid...I don't know how to explain it completely but it helps to loosen the hair by way of a chemical reaction. I personally have heard of people using yogurt (full fat) and lemon with better results. PM Naturalgurl about it or look in her fotki.
Baking soda is also supposed to help in elongating the curls. I use baking soda/water as my shampoo, about a palmful of BS to 16oz of water. I don't leave it on for very long but my hair is more manageable now, but I think that's due to more moisture. Anyway, baking soda rinses may help you stretch your curls a bit more.
If you want you could try a combination of things. I do a baking soda wash and caramel treatment about once a week. You could also try doing the yogurt/lemon as well. Yogurt is also a protein so that could replace your protein DC if you want.
Hope this helps!
