Can you wash your hair and relax it the next day?

Has anyone ever tried this. I now have cornrows and I want to take them out Friday after work and get a touch up Saturday afternoon. But I know my hair will be so filthy I need to wash it. But I am afraid my scalp will be on fire the next day.

NO

but also I'm wondering even if I don't was it that the tugging on my hair and scalp from taking the braids out may cause me to burn when I get the relaxer.

What you can do is wash your hair today with the cornrows in that way by Saturday it won't be so dirty, not that the dirt will affect the relaxer in any way.

I thiink I might try it that way but it is itching something crazy right now that's why I figured I wanted to wash it. But now I'm worried about the tugging.

I am definitely going to at least wet it the day before because I want her to see where my new growth ends.

You have to wait why? Is this because of the scrubbing or because of the water on your hair?

I understand that waiting at least 3 days is recommended for both the health of your scalp as well as to allow the chemical to perform better.

Scalp Health: you want a few days so that your scalp has an opportunity to replenish the sebum back because the sebum will serve as a natural barrier to protect your scalp from the caustic chemical (even if you base, it is not the same as having your sebum up there as well because the composition of natural sebum provides greater proteection), If you try to relaxe next day, your scalp may burn because no protection and won't be able to acheive the straightness you want, plus, risk scabs, sores, burns, etc.

Better Performance: if you HAIR is freshly washed, then as I understand it, the "water/moisture" left on the hair will prevent the chemical from straightening the hair very well and the relaxer won't "take".

At least, that's what I've sort undertstood. Anywho, I wouldn't risk it.

DO NOT DO IT i did this back in march and boy was i sorry. less than two minutes after she started applying the relaxer my scalp was on fire. i could not sit still in my seat because of all the pain. my head was throbbing so much it felt like someone was pounding my head with a jack hammer. even after all the relaxer was washed out the pain DID NOT decrease. sitting under the dryer for a treatment and rollerset hurt even more. blowdring with the round brush to style it was pure torture.
i had a headache for the rest of the day.
the next morning my scalp still felt like it was on fire. but now i had the added bonus of very thick scabs on my scalp.
it's an experience i will never forget.
p.s thats one less thing i'll hve to worry about in 12 weeks.

I've been told several times (by friends and stylists) that you should wait at least 2 weeks after taking out your braids before you relax.

I have relaxed immediately after taking out braids(same day) without any problems-braids were fairly large and had only been in for 3 weeks. I think it really depends on the condition of the scalp. For example, I think it's probably OK if the braids have been in for a short time, say less than 1 month and there's not been opportunity to tangle or get too dirty down there. However, if the braids have been in for months and there's alot of tangles and/or it's really dirty, I wouldn't do it . . .

Well my braids have only been in for a week and Only the front of my hair is braided. It's cornrows with my natural hair. I'm thinking I may just wet it and not wash it. Your story scared the crap outta me and I DO NOT want to go through all of that pain.

Wolftrap, why would you wet it? A good stylist will be able to determine the new growth without the need to wet. I've always understood that "wetting" the hair before relaxing is also a problem, I'm not sure why. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Wolftrap, why are you being so difficult? LOL

I never wash my hair when I take off the braids. Since it's dirty just comb it out so it's not all tangled up and go get your relaxer. Your hair dresser should understand, I do it all the time. If you wash it and go the next day your scalp will burn before the application is even over, even if you use a mild relaxer.

LOL...I'm a difficult person. OK I will leave it alone. I just can't take the itching. I'm hard headed when I think I have an idea. It's my downfall. LOL

Your hair will be wavy and you will be headed straight for overlapping AND you still gonna burn, wash is wash.

Sure you can,...IF YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH!! I did this some years back (if only I'd known about LHCF) and WHY WAS I LITERALLY CRYING IN THE CHAIR? I didn't know anything about hair and I had no knowledge that you sholdn't wash your hair prior to relaxing, so I gave my hair A GOOD 'OL SCRUB the day before I got a relaxer and let me tell you,...remember that scene in the movie "Malcolm X" where he got a relaxer and the water was turned off? Remember how he ran through that place looking for a water source before finally PLUNGING his head in the toilet? Ladies,...that was me! All except the toilet bit. She could only keep the relaxer on for less than half the allotted time and I had SCABS all over my head FOR DAYS! Girl,...DO NOT DO THIS! Your hair will be washed during the whole relaxing process anyway so don't worry about it being dirty the day before.
