Hi,

I have black, relaxed hair. I DESPERATELY want red hair. :wallbash: I'll go for a dark red.

Has anyone been successful dying relaxed hair and it didn't fall out on the floor? If so...PLEASE tell me how????

THANKS!

is it permanant black?

If so, sorry...you have to grow it out for best results.

At least that is what i had to do.

My tips are dyed red with permanent dye. I went 7 months without needing a trim and i was using my CHI once a week so I say yes. LOL the only reason why i stopped using it was so I could go a year with out trimming.

**Its all about TLC.

The safest way I learned to color relaxed hair is the natural way with body art henna (also combined with amla and indigo). Henna used alone always dyes the hair red. However, since your hair is black, the results may not be as apparent. I'm not sure about this though. :)

Henna is also good for the hair and the more you use it, the stronger your hair.

I've always dyed my relaxed hair. I just make sure to give enough time between relaxers and dye jobs(usually 2+ weeks) and my hair is very healthy and soft. Of course, make sure to deep condition and moisturize after you dye it!

Yeh, it's Robert Craig, but this has no ammonia and no peroxide. I've been using it for a couple of years and it fades like a semi permanent, so i don't think this counts as a permanent dye. Does that matter?

Thanks, I did try the henna. I'm serious about wanting some red hair. It was ok for the first couple of times, but after the fourth application, I was like "this crap is everywhere!" I was having to get in the shower butt naked to apply it. It became a dread. It also dried my hair and I put the oils and used the moisturizing conditioner too. Honestly, I think i'm too lazy to do henna every week for red hair. :ohwell:

:lachen: i used Hi Rez. And my hair was a little dry but only because I hadn't found my staple moisturizer yet but now that I use my Nexxus and Mizani my hair isnt dry at all! It has done a complete 360. Everyone couldnt believe I went 7 months w/o a trim but I didnt need it and I didnt start DC'ing, moisturizing, sealing, no direct heat, light protein until last month and my hair was dyed in May. So yes, there is hope lol If u check my fotki my november album shows the condition my hair was in b4 i started a concrete regimen. The red doesnt show in the pics for some reason :wallbash:, but it in the Nov album, my tips are red. HTH!

Hey, is that you in your siggy? If you're not a model, you should seriously look into it. I'm calling Tyra!

Did you ever dye your hair red? What did you use?

I work at a well know hair color manufacturer. And several of the stylists told me with a relaxer i shouldn't dye my hair red because it would need bleach. They said my hair would break off. But these people are not of color...and they don't know what the LHCF women know!

Ok...i'm taking notes like I'm taking a test!

So, where can I buy Hi Rez color? Did your hair look seriously red in person or just when you stood under a bright flourescent hospital light?

I'm off to check your albums. And if you hear a knock on the door...it's me! :lachen:

I used the Hi Rez to dye it red. This is my 5th time dying it in 4 years. Just to clarify, I'll compare my experiences with and with out bleach.

1. Without- I died my hair 4 times this way and never had a problem. The color was pretty and not CHICKEN HEAD RED LOL.

2. With bleach-my APL hair broke off to SL. This was a year ago (this is in my fotki too if u wana c how bright red it was, and i stress, it was BRIGHT). I had some pieces of hair that was one inch long but thanks to half wigs, my hair grew back to almost bsl in a year and to celebrate what did I do? Cut it in layers and dye it again lol but this time no bleach (hence my current hair). The problem with bleach is that you may risk your hair turning out CHICKEN HEAD READ, or nicely put, overbearing. It causes the hair to break off because the bleach lifts your natural color so the red will take. This causes 2 problems a). Ur color will most likely be too bright or 2). B/c your natural color is basically non existent u have to constantly dye it with a rinse. Your color will go from chicken head red, to bright red, to pink, to orange, to brass, to bronze, to blonde without recoloring (trust, this happened to me last year) The constant rinses and coloring on top of the bleach that is required are damaging. Bleach alone eats away ur hair but color on top of color on top of bleach DESTROYS it.

So i would strongly advise u to stay AWAY from bleach, its best to use no color,or henna, or a rinse, but if u must, permanent is better than bleach. HTH and sorry for writing a book lol

LOL u can buy it at any local beauty supply. I have seen it in some supermarkets. I picked out a dark red b/c I didnt want it to be to bright and it took real well. It is now an brownish-red, but i love it. It looks natural and really accents the layers.

That is me! Thanks for the compliment and yes, I'm an actress/model. Actually, I have dyed my hair red. I used to wear it an auburn/copper color for little while, but I was told to change it to a more "commercially marketable color". Do you remember how red Tyra's hair was a few seasons ago on AMNT, the season where she went of on Tiffany? That was how red my hair was. I used Dark and Lovely RICH AUBURN. I remember for a whole minute the box had Mary J. Blige on it and they called the color Mary Mary. I'm not sure if they changed it. Creme of Nature also has some great reds.

I'm not sure what red color you're going for, but that's what I used and I LOVED it. I think auburn red looks better on chocolate toned women than say, fire engine red, IMHO.

Keep in mind, if your hair is black, it will not immediately look like the color on the box. But I guarantee after you dye it a few times, it WILL eventually be that color. I used to dye my hair black before I decided to go red and it took about 3 dye jobs before I got my desired color. At first, it may just have a hint of red, but it will get more vibrant each time. Just make sure to deep condition and not dye too frequently. This is what worked for me and I had very fine, relaxed hair at the time. Be careful because your hair is GORGEOUS! HTHs

Ok...this is too funny. I was in Sally's tonight and i picked up a box of Dark and Lovely Rich Auburn. The woman told me not to use it. Uggh. I bought the semi permanent Dark and Lovely red instead. I just washed it out and my hair looks just as black as before...waste of time and money.

How frequently did you dye it red? once a month? Did you just touch up the roots or apply all over again? Did the color just fade or did it grow out and you have roots? BTW... I loved Tyra's red color.

And thanks for the compliment!

That is SO funny! What a coincidence that it was the exact color. Did she say why you shouldn't use it? She probably tried it and just didn't like how it looked on her. I'm telling you, my hair was the exact color that Tyra had. Her hair was the reason I went red in the first place and I got compliments all the time because it looked GOOOOD.

I always dyed my hair about two weeks after I relaxed it because the relaxer usually stripped some of the color. Sometimes I would be bold and do it within a week of relaxing. When I would re-dye, I would do it all over so the color would look really vibrant again. Now that I'm transitioning, I dye it every 6-8 weeks. You may not have to do it that often, but because I'm an actress, I have to look just like my headshot at all times. That means no roots!

And some good advice would be to WAIT FOR YOUR HAIR TO DRY BEFORE YOU JUDGE!! It always looks darker when wet. When it drys, you can really see the color difference. But, it seems like a semi-permanent wouldn't do as good a job, IMO.

I just dyed my hair 2 days ago - copper reddish!!!! DArk and lovely 376 - REd Hot Rhythm I LOVE IT! :drunk: my hair is originally light brown and definately wanted a change. I haven't seen any damage or breakage...but it's been only 3 days but I just think you have to really be kind to your hair and definately moisturize it and keep it happy if you dye it.

Good luck

In order to get it bright red, you are going to need something with bleach/peroxide in it. It depends on how many levels you want to lift the hair. But if you don't want it that bright, then it can be done without the bleach. It'll be more of a dark red, like a burgundy though since your hair is already black. It will lighten up over time though. Especially if you keep dying it.

Healthy relaxed hair can be dyed. You just have to take extra care of it to make sure it does not get damaged. A lot of people's hair cannot stand up to the permanent dye (especially with a relaxer because the added color makes it a double process) and that's why it leads to damage and stylists advise against it. I would suggest you stay away from the bleach. Also another thing, red is the hardest color to maintain because it fades the fastest. Just thought I'd throw that out there if you didn't know.

I dye my hair with dark & lovely Chestnut Blonde for 10+ years. no problem. I do it maybe 2wice a year. I believe Dark & Lovely has amonia, because it lightens my hairs, but I have had no breakage or dryness.

You shouldn't put dye over hair that is permanently dyed black. Im not sure about semi-perm colors, but your hair will turn greensih and the color will not be right at all.

Ok, I went to work and spoke to several other people and they have me freakin' scared to try the permanent color. And I don't scare easily!

I told them about you...YES...and how you successfully relaxed and colored your hair red. And i just got looks like this :ohwell:.

Do you have any pictures of your hair red?

Wow! Is that the color in the picture? That's BEAUTIFUL!!! My hair is jet black, so I wonder if I would encounter more damage going to a red, since I guess it would take more to get there. hmmm....

Thanks. Ok, when you say i can get a dark red if i don't use bleach/peroxide...would this be buying a box like the Dark and Lovely permanent color? I thought that has peroxide in it. Several folks told me today that I HAVE to use bleach to see any change since my hair is black. Do you know of a dye that doesn't have bleach that works on black hair to make it red?

Tenjoy - Thanks! My hair does have a permanent black dye on it. It sounds like Dark and Lovely is the way to go though. Do you do anything special to maintain it?

Lovenharmony - Thanks! I went to the website. Is this different from body art henn? Would it dye black hair red?

You can you just have to realize that having more than one chemical in your hair means that you have to be extra extra gentle with your hair. It also depends on how light you are going. If you go 4 shades past your natural level you are looking for trouble. Sometimes even if you stay within the four shades you can still experience some damage.

If you do be prepared for some extra dryness

Did you tell them that I said it took me three tries to get the desired color?? Well, they can give looks all they want to! I know what worked for me and I'm giving you advice based on my experience. You know your hair better than anyone, and you know what it can handle.

With your hair being jet black, you WILL NOT get red the first or even second time out. It just won't happen. You need to take good care of your hair and give it a few tries. The black will eventually fade and give the red a chance to come through.

I'm so sorry I don't have any photos on my laptop of when my hair was "Tyra" red, but I do have one of when my hair was a similar color about two years ago. Do not judge this photo. I have some SERIOUS new growth going on. Here's the link. Hurry up and look so I can take it down!

Oh, Thank You! You're are so sweet.
I'm looking at all your pictures. You're very photogenic!

I don't see any pics w/your hair looking red. I see the black and light brown color. I'll keep looking though.

I did tell the people at work that it took you three tries and they were like .

I think i'm gonna focus on getting my hair in the best condition and then just go for it. I believe in trying stuff, so i don't have any regrets!

Well, you've inspired me. Thank you!!!
