Can you detangle good enough to comb airdryed hair?

Does anyone detangle good enough after washing and conditioning, (and use good product I presume) for their hair to be able to be combed through after it was airdryed?

If so, what products were used?

And/or techniques?

TIA

It depends on how the hair was airdried. Airdried hair should not be combed if it isn't dried smooth, otherwise too much hair can be broken off.

In one of the threads here (last year, I think) this was discussed and I experimented with my hair. I was told if I airdried in a rollerset, which I do anyway to smooth and "straighten" my hair, I could comb it after it had dried because it was smooth. I tried it and it worked! Maybe 2 or 3 strands in my comb.

I haven't continued this (for no reason) but now I know it's possible, only if the airdried hair is already smooth.

After detangling in the shower while rinsing off my deep conditioner (Humectress), I apply some leave-in - Headress or Biolage Leave-in Hair Tonic on my dripping wet hair and my comb slips through. I seal in the moisture with oil or serum and roll up each ponytail section (I do ponytail rollersets) on wet magnetic rollers (wetting them is a tip from Anky) and secure with pins. I airdry my hair overnight.

The next day, when my hair has airdried, it is very smooth and bouncy. I usually either braid it up for a braidout or make a bun or an updo style, without combing. But it can safely be combed, if desired. One of these days, I'll do some more experimenting with this.

If I comb my hair straight back while wet and let it air dry hanging there smooth and detangled like that, I can comb it once it's dry.

But I wouldn't recommend it.

This technique would probably work for those whose hair is relaxed straight. It would not work on my hair.

I always shampoo/condition in the shower and let the force of the water "straighten" my hair. I gently use a Denman Brush (D3) while rinsing the conditioner out. When finished, it's totally tangle free. I drape a towel over the top of my head and carefully fold it behind my back to dry my hair a little more (no rubbing). When parting and combing through, start at the bottom and work your way up using a wide tooth comb.

When I airdry, I apply a wrap/set lotion (I use Pantene Wrap/Set for WOC) and a serum (NTM, John Freida Extra Strength) all over (roots to ends), part and dry in 4 ponytails wrapped in a scarf. One of our members suggested placing ouchless ponytail holders about every 2" down each ponytail to straighten the hair even more while airdrying. I tried it last week and it really does work! :notworthy

When my hair is about 80% dry, I might comb through, but I've found that I don't lose much hair if I shampoo/condition under the shower head. I haven't managed to wash/condition/detangle and NOT lose any hair, but it's not a whole lot if handled very gently.

It depends on how I dry my hair. If I air-dry loose I won't comb through it but if I air-dry in braids or by using my banding method (in my fotki) it's easy to comb through and I don't loose any strands. I use Elucence MB to comb through with my D5 brush.

I never comb through hair dried hair UNLESS I dampen it first. I have a spray bottle that gives off a really fine mist. I mist the last 5 inches of my hair and then add a little moisturizer and then I can comb without breakage. I usually air dry in a ponytail or bun so there is never really a reason for me to comb anyway.

my hair is natural. I comb when dry all the time..did not know this was bad for my hair. I mean I detangle really well after a wash but if i just let it air dry it will kind of curl up and get a lil tangled..how do you not comb when dry? Don't you guys get tangles? Is there a way to keep my hair from starting to tangle as it airdries?:ohwell:

I use different leave-ins, but usually it's Deep Brilliance Leave-In or NTM Silk Touch Leave-In. I put it in and detangle in about 8 sections. This is also after I have detangled under the running shower head after my conditioner is rinsed. When I get out of the shower I don't towel my hair or squeeze any of the excess water. The weight of the water helps me to air dry with smoother results. The water also aids in detangling.

As my hair dries, I comb through it about every 30 minutes.

Me too. I don't have a problem after air-drying. I make sure my hair is detangled in the shower and I comb it every 20 mins or so while air drying so it dries straight and completely detangled. And I don't lose any hair either.

Great tip...Combing it thru every so often...

I air dried the other day in two plaits. I took them out twice, combed through while damp and re-braided. It dried pretty soft and smooth and I wore a pony puff the next day. But by the end of the day my strands felt dry and tangled. I was able to comb it, but had some breakage. I just pressed it and put it in a ponytail. No more breakage when I comb now.
