Hello.

In 2000 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. August 2000, my thyroid was ablated w/radiated iodine. I currently take Levothyroxine at a dosage 0.112 MG daily. My hair did thin out considerably, initially, but has since grown back. My hair is classified now--people have told me--as being very thick. My hair is dry, but I cannot say if it is because of my condition or the way I have cared for my hair--I must admit, it has not been very good. Is there anybody else out there who is classified as having hypothyroidism, either through natural causes or through treatment, who have success stories that they can share with me? I'm really in need of camaraderie and support in this. Thank you.

I'm 4a/4b.

I wish I could help, sorry. I only get hypo when I'm on too much medicine, but I initally have thyotoxicosis. Once your medicine is at a well balance, your hair should return to somewhat normal. But if there is an upset with the thyroid, the hair may definitely give you a warning sign, but you should not go by that alone, but focus on what symptoms you may be experiencing.

But if you're worried about your thyroid, I suggest you go get a blood test as soon as possible to be on the safe side, so that the condition does not worsen (if there is one).

Hello Prim13

I too have been battling a thyroid condition for over 2 years.
My hair has thinned quite a lot. I was taking Levoxyl for a time, then I was switched to Synthoid. I did not like the synthoid so now I am back on levoxyl and another medication that I can not remember the name at the moment (it may be cytomel). I have Hashimotos diesase, I have already come to terms with my thinning hair, I just hope I do not go bald. I have no solutions as to how to deal with the hair loss. I am just trying to keep from tipping the scales at 250 lbs after being no more than 165 lbs for most of my adult life and trying to stay active for my kids sake. It is still a battle I must admit. I go back in Sept. to be re-evaluated as to how these 2 medications are doing. I wish you luck in dealing with this sneaking diesease. Apparently I have had it for quite some time, having children somehow brought it to the for front.
God bless.

I do not have Grave's disease, but my mom does. She experiences a lot of dryness and also periodical hair thinning. She always knows when her thyroid is "acting up" or when the dosage of her medication needs to be adjusted, because she experiences hair shedding. She wears her hair in a twa, but the hair loss and thinning experience is very upsetting for her. When she experiences thinning or small bald patches, she uses rogaine in those areas to get her hair growing again. My mom has had this condition for several years and she has not gone bald--she just experiences hair loss in places from time to time. She has mastered certain styles to mask her hair loss while her hair regrows. She really keeps her hair moisturized and uses essential oils. There can be hair, yes, but you must take very good care of it, because the hair is drier and does occasionally shed. I wish you all the best in managing your condition. The thyroid is tricky and difficult to regulate. The radiation did absolutely nothing for my mom, except render her unable to share the same bed with my father for a bit and the medication constantly needs to be adjusted. It is hard on my mom, too, but she doesn't let it rule her life, even on those days where the symptoms are really getting to her. I hope that you can find some more answers to your questions, as I feel like I may not have been much help.
