Not sure if I understand what your saying but that sounds like shedding...it may be because of change of weather. If you could explain in detail what's going on with your hair, then maybe we can help ya out!

BTW, shrinkage is when your hair shrinks about 50-75% of it's length. For example, when I wash my hair it stretches and you can see it's length, but if I decide to wear it curly or not blow dry at all then the hair will shrink. I hope this is clear.

Mommatide,

I don't understand what you mean you need to expand? Shrinkage is when the hair reverts to it natural and healthy state. My experience of shrinkage is that since my hair has become healthier it has more elasticity, if I stretch my hair it is double the length of my unstretched hair. I equate shrinkage with extremely healthy hair.

Hope this helps,

o.k., when i start to get a nice amount of new growth my hair starts to look more sparse overall. the roots are compact and some how it just makes my hair look like it shrunk in length. i panic, then when i get a relaxer, it looks fine. thats the only way i can explain it...sorry:(

okay...think of your new growth like a slinky toy. you can stretch a slinky out to where it's long, but it will still spring back to it's original, shorter form. that's basically what shrinkage is. this is why your hair appears shorter.

shrinkage is a property of natural or unprocessed hair. when you get a relaxer and it starts to grow out, the new growth is natural and unprocessed. that new growth has a coil or bend pattern...it is not straight, so your roots are going to be much more dense and compact. So the difference in the two textures is what you are seeing. There's nothing to panic about...
