I too am struggling with getting a relaxer and just saw a head that was relaxed that was pretty damaged. Lord I don't want to go through that! Anyone actually get a nice level of straightness with the iron?

Yep. My hair's not pin straight like it is with a hard press but it's pretty straight. Pictures are in my 2006 "Length Check in" album.

Yes, a flat iron can get your hair just as straight as a relaxer. I think you'd regret getting a relaxer. You'd miss the curls! :)

For those that do this, what is your process?

Blow dry. Use a moisturizer. Add some cream press. Part small sections of the hair and then slide the flat iron over the hair.

Def. yes. I use it and everyone is asking if I went back and got a relaxer (they wish:p )
I put some serum or cream straightener & shea butter in my hair and make several braids to airdry, then I use Heat Glide to flatiron.

How many swipes do you all do to one section of the hair? I am asking this b/c I was sitting in the beauty salon and noticed the beautician swipe one section of one woman's hair about 4 times back to back. Isn't that too much?

After washing and conditioning, I section my wet hair, detangle with a denman and braid- maybe 10 or more braids. Then once my hair is dry, I undo one braind and I spray heat protectant on the length. Then I take super small section, put a baby dab of marcel curl wax at the root and then maxiglide. I have it on 5 or lower at all times. I usually do two swipes in the front and three times in the kinkier back section of my head.

That depends on the temperature setting. If the iron is not super hot, four times is probably not excessive. However, she is probably not using the proper technique if four swipes are required. That's pretty time consuming over the course of a whole head.

It was pretty hot...the iron was smoking. Plus before that she had blow dried the ladies hair (using a brush that had a lot of hair on it...yuck...dirty brushes are one of my pet peeves). Right after that she iron the ladies head swiping each section four times (should she had wait a little to let the hair cool down before ironing or at least cold blast it?)

Yeah that's way too many swipes. That can result in scorched hair. Just think how hot your hair is on the first swipe....now imagine immediately swiping over that....you are doubling the degree of heat. I would let the section cool for a few seconds before swiping again.

I use mine on a low heat (3) and give myself a soft press which is the Rudy Huxtable look in my signature. Check out Bublnbrnsuga's album for what looks like a 'hard' or much straighter press with the Maxiglide.

I maxi glided my sister best friend's 4a/b hair 30 minutes ago. I wish I had my digi cam and saw this thread so I could show you!
I washed and conditioned it and saturated it with 3 parts water 1 part setting lotion (was going to roller set but we changed our minds) put it in about 7-8 twists or knots...whatever you wanna call them. I then proceeded to press her hair on setting 9 w/ mango butter (I was just trying to get rid of the stuff) And her hair was GORGEOUS and flowing.

We were all surprised. When her boyfriend came to pick her up, he asked if we relaxed her hair.

So I know it can be done....it's just a matter of what techniques would be best for you.

i maxiglide my hair practically bone straight using the 4 setting. i however have to blowdry my hair first because i find that if i don't my hair doesn't glide through those pins. but it definitely straightens my natural 4a hair. i wish i could show you my pictures but i'm trying to be good on the no heat challenge!

I forgot about my no heat challenge I started a last year. I used heat to do rinses but mininmally. Good job with the challenge.

To the OP, it takes a lot of TLC, mental preparation and patience to become natural. I would hate for you to resort to a relaxer just out of frustration.
