I need help with this thick hair of mine. I search to see if someone has already asked the question and couldn’t find anything. I have been able to stretch to almost 8 weeks and 3 days exactly, but my hair is so thick that when I pull it back in a bun it looks so ugly. I think I have tried almost everything to slick my hair back and keep it from humping up on one side of my head or the big ugly hump on the top of my head after putting it in a ponytail or bun. I have tried activator, gel and leave in conditioner. Heck, I even tried grease and my head itched all day. I hope someone knows what I am talking about because I would love to be able to stretch longer, but I just don’t think I can do it. Any suggestions?

My hair is extemely thick too, and sometimes I just want to cut it all off.

I stretch 10-11 weeks usually, and the only reason I make it that long is because I rollerset and flat iron my roots. I'm not sure if you are on a no-heat regimen, but if you aren't, you might try that and see if it works for you (make sure to use a heat protectant).

I feel your pain, I really do!;)

Why don't you try to pull it back when it's wet. You could do a conditioner wash in the shower and then just pull it back with a pony-holder.

I am trying very hard not to use heat.

Not a thick headed girl but, Have you thought about doing the silk scarf airdrying method while wet and not combing until wash day?

I have a tutorial in my fotki. But the thing that you must remember is that you should NOT comb airdried hair. I only comb on wash days when i detangle.

I normally wet it down in the shower and then put whatever leave in and then slick back. I am able to do this the first four or five weeks after a perm, but after that it is a struggle. I am really happy with my progress over the year. I have come a long way from a twa to hair a little pass my shoulders. I would love to continue the growth.

yeah I would def. try the scarf method. Sylver2 also has one in her fotki that is great.

Are you detangling your hair very well?? Have you tried a Denman brush?? It works well for getting hair smooth.

I also have thick hair. I don't really like the way my hair looks pulled back in a bun, but a friend of mines had a part with hers and I like that. So I will try mines with a part next time. It's just something about my hair going straight back that I don't like.

I wear a scarf at night to bed, so maybe I will start wetting my hair at night and slicking it back. I use to have a denman brush, but I couldn't remember if it's ok to use so I will not have breakage.

You have to detangle BEFORE you use the Denman. You will pulls lots of hair out if you attempt to detangle with the Denman. At least I will.

Thick haired lady here  (as evident in my siggy) My hair never lays down unless I slick it when damp and freshly conditioned and wear a loose, but tied down pony to bed. The next morning my hair is flat, all I have to do is re-slick, re-moisturize and go! Its that silk scarf method that everyone keeps mentioning in this thread. Its been working for me for over a year:grin:

Thanks so much everyone. I am going to try your suggestion and hope I can at least make it to 12 weeks.

I use the denman brush too. But I pull it all back while wet and try to tie it down.

I know JUST what you are talking about.

I have very thick hair and my strands are coarse, too. I know that you mentioned that you've tried activator and I'm not sure if it was the S-Curl spray, but that works great for me. Shea butter works great, too.

I pull my hair back when wet and use a shampoo brush to smooth. This method really works and shampoo brushes are cheap.

I agree and while it wet apply your leavein and such. I am currently 8 weeks post relax and my newgrowth is so thick that I was having problems with keeping it moisturized and not puffy looking. I use Pro-line comb-thru softener and my hair is so soft and manageable. I can even comb through the newgrowth with no problems and I have alot of newgrowth.

Awesome, I have some new products to try.

People have told me that I am lucky to have thick hair, but it is sometimes very challenging. When I flat iron my hair, it will hold for a week. My girlfriend said she has to get up every morning to flat iron her hair.

Oh my goodness, you sound just like me. I have streched for about 5 weeks now and am going through this exact thing. I find it funny that someone metioned the part thing, because this is what I did last night. I made a small front part and pulled all the hair back and it really made a difference than just wearing it all straight back. I also apply my moisturizers, baggy, and wear a scarf overnight, this also helps it to flatten a little.
HTH!

I have thick hair too lady and I feel your pain. I stretch to about 12 weeks but I start wearing braid outs and twist outs around weeks 8 and 9. The ONLY way I can get anything approaching presentable with a bun or phony pony is to put some KMS relaxing balm on my hair and blow dry it. I know you're trying to stay away from the heat but I got about 2 weeks without washing so I sacrifice it. Yeah I know, bad me, bad me - :spank: .

Yay!! I'm not the only one who likes the part better!!!!

Woo!! Hoo!!! Thanks for the advice; I now have a solution that provides excellent results.

1st. I shampooed my hair and combed it through with the shampoo in it.
2nd. After putting my conditioner in my hair, I placed a plastic cap on and left it on until I finished watching a really good movie. “Running Scared” if anyone is interested.
3rd. I washed the conditioner out, parted my hair on the side and applied my leave ins (leave in conditioner, activator and gel)
4th. Wrap my hair and woke up in the morning with a nice slick back bun and no bulk or hump.

This will work. Next, I am going to learn how to do some nice twist.

A good conditioner wash with cholesterol
a good leave in and a creamy something, I use Pantene Comb thru treatment
, some kemi oyl and some Elasta QP Glaze and new growth or not my hair looks slick

(just realized this yesterday  )

I feel your pain. The longest I can go is about 10 weeks. I too roller set and then use a warm iron on the roots. But the best bet is my half wig. It takes me twice as long to do my hair than the average head. I was always running late. Now I condition wash and put on my half wig. Be careful and go to a place that will let you try the wigs on because some can be very tight under very thick hair.

A part is soooo much better...especially as your perm starts to get fuzzy.

if it wasn't for a part I would never be able to stretch or do anything. My middle part saved me thru a 6 month stretch
