I am tired of them! I am really really trying to do good and complete this bun challenge. However I fell off the wagon on Friday and wore my curls out (I guss it was still better than pressing it). Since yesterday I've had my hair in long pinned up plaits under a wig. I really want to do this because I know that soooo many people have gotten great results from it but these buns are just starting to get to me!

I KNOW that for some of you this is NOT your favorite style, so how do you do it????? How are you getting through this challenge (if you are on it).

Here's what I've done CN - I've cut bangs as you know, but I've also let go of the concept of the official bun in favor of the "loose casual updo". In both my ends stay protected, but to me a "bun" meant a real live "fashioned chignon" as opposed to just getting my hair up however I could manage that.

What I have been doing is wearing my hair in a very loose updo that I can take out quickly if I am going to be somewhere (around a cute boy say...

) where I don't want to resemble a troll or when my bun begins to annoy my scalp. The premise is, if I get tired of it, until I get use to it, I take it down for 5 minutes or so a day so I can feel like my hair is not so "confined". That's another problem with the bun deal - my hair line and nape, even if I don't pull it really tighly, can become a little sensitive when my hair is "securely locked away".

The benefit of this too is that my hair doesn't require gel for this and that really aggravates my scalp and it says cleaner longer - something I was also struggling with. I know people do their buns with wet hair but that doesn't work as well for me. With it getting cooler I also don't want my hair wet as much. So this was a nice in between. My hair is still up 95% of the day.

And it's ALWAYS up when I'm home, because who's tryin' to be all extra cute indoors?

how long have you been wearing buns? i really don't think there's anything wrong with wearing your hair down every now and then. nothing to the extreme is good or easy to maintain. i say wear your hair out if you want to, but not too often...

I have been wearing buns or phonytails for about three weeks, the week before that i think my hair was still in a smushed down bun under my wig. I am thisclose to giving up on the bun thing. I am thisclose to giving up on doing the things that are supposed to be so great for my hair. I am going to try to keep going til November, but unless I see real real progress, I don't think I can push on to a year.

I agree with Adrienne,

You could do some other udpos where you keep your hair tucked in...(see the How To's thread for a link to a website with many updos)...and also you could do some where you at least keep he hair off your neck/back like I do.

You have received some good advice and thread info! Are you accessorizing your hair? Along with the "How To's" (previously mentioned by Hairlove) another thread that comes to mind is Dressing up a bun?? There are others so you might what to do a search on buns or accessories as well.

Check you PM as well.

I'm actually having fun, being creative with the Buns..

Positoning, dressing up, down, double bun, etc. I'm finding quite the opposite, that there are endless possibiities.

Have you tried different strategies.

For example today I took my bun form positioned the bun to the extreme right(part is sort slanted) and put the chopsticks in, everyone here at work is just raving over this simple adjustment.

I'm beggining to be called the bun lady

Try doing a double or triple (depending on how long your hair is) These are smaller buns parted across the top, ear to ear and midback (if you can visalize - top middle bottom) you can use sticks in just the middle section or top or none at all.

Try some new things out..

Most of these can be done w/o the Gami..

I saw your hair CN (which is LOVELY BTW
grin.gif
) and I don't think you should give up.

Try just throwing it up there! I can't tell you how much this has helped. Bring a claw clip (I have tiny tiny ones you can barely even see in my hair - and I don't have NEARLY as much as you) with you and when you aren't conscious of your appearance (in class, at home, on your way to the bus stop or in the car) throw those gorgeous curls up into a loose top knot and just make sure your ends are underneath the rest. And I agree with adrienne - you can wear it down occasionally - just not mostly, I think is the key.

Make it work for YOU....I realized that while I love the many french rolls and donut buns I saw on various threads and discussions about buns - I'm just too much of a free spirit
laugh.gif
to be that confined. I need to be able to change. To get to my hair if I have to. The other thing is - no fly by the seat of the pants updo looks the same all the time, so you can "see" yourself looking different all the time. Just get it up however you can....

Your hair is stunning. It's long enough already to do some fun things with. I think it will respond to protective styling. It's just a matter of thinking outside the box.

Can you post pics? Those buns sound really pretty and interesting.

My Part is like this, but the bun is to the right so you can see it when you look at my face, rather than in back, like hers.

I do this when I want to wear down

I'm sorry...I should have been more specific. Can you post a pic of the double/triple bun?

I'll try to find one. This was MY OWN style so I don't really have a pict. But if you look at the one picuture, the double bun is just like that except seperated, whereas that one looks like one "S". Help me out with the visualization here. LOL

LIke this, except parted ear to ear two buns. IN the triple the are smaller of course with the first one just above crown.,

I'm going to do your bun style on my extreme right with a part. It should look very pretty, even elegant, especially with the sticks.

Your welcome. And you can do it with bangs, like tracy said. Mine however are need cutting, and I can't cut til Dec... But can't wait.

I know how you feel CN. Like Mindymouse, I've been changing mine up some by changing which sides I wear my part on. Sometimes I part it in the middle. Other times I don't wear a part at all, just pull it all back into a bun. I wear my updos as a tuck and roll, or sometimes just a roll. I let my bangs (which are to my lips)hang down sometimes. Like you, I have a short wig that I like to wear as I get closer to touch up time -- wearing cornrows underneath. So far, so good.

Thanks, Mindymouse. That style looks really pretty. I'm going to a banquet in a couple of weeks and that looks like a very nice style to try out.

Tebby, do you have Bangs? Or you could do, ringlet curls in the front/sides.

I successfully wore my bun low on my extreme right, with a part like in this photo and I had a long, wavy tendril hanging like her (also on my right). I did turn a lot of heads with this style today and I love it! Thank you again Mindymouse for your creative ideas.

I not on the challenge but I do wear buns 90% of the time. Otherwise, I wear a ponytail or the top up and the back out. I prefer buns b/c I mess with my hair less and its easy to fix if it gets messed up.

I don't have bangs but I have some shorter pieces of hair that I can make ringlet curls out of.

i find that wearing buns too long is boring when your hair is not that long. my hair is long enough for a bun but not long enough to style it that creatively. can any of you ladies give me ideas about how to do up do's with shorter hair.

Sometimes, I put cornrows in the front of my hair and part the back into two ponytails and clip phonytails over them. You can do that style with short hair.

More power to all of ya'll on this challenge. I would drive off a bridge if I could only wear buns everyday.

I don't know if this will help but they are called Zulu knots. A lot of miniature buns made by using a product called Whirl a Style. It's sold in 3 different sizes (S,M,L).

I have a couple of styles using that product (for longer hair) in "my pics" in my "Bun challenge" folder (10 wks post relaxer).

Please excuse the pictures, I'm still experimenting with new cameras and I still don't have a clue on proper usage.

Those are some cute styles. Where to you get the Whirl a Style from?

Also, where is the cheapest place I can get a Hairdini from, for anyone who knows?

I found the WhirlaStyle in only 1 of 4 Claire's stores that I shop in. The only size they carry is the large for the same price that's on the site. I plan to order the other sizes from the website.
