Bun/Protective styles

I can't seem to ever make a decent bun, so I will put my hair in a ponytail, twist it around, tuck the ends in and wear a scrunchi. The only problem about that is my ends look so rough, but I try to moisturize my ends well.

I have tried the chignon, but can never get my hair to cover it entirely. Can anyone recommend any good protective style videos or hair devices? I do use the goody spin pins, but I would like to try something else.

Have you tried one of those donut rings or a sock to make a bun? - it comes out neat everytime. There are some vids on YT on how to make a sock bun.
