BROKEN HAIR TIARA ACROSS THE FRONT OF MY HEAD

I am so disgusted. I've been taking better care of my hair since LHCF. I recently wore my hair out and got countless remarks about how long my hair has grown. It is also getting thicker. However, today after I poo'd, conditioned and roller set, my hair was soft and shiny except for this tiara of broken hair from 1/2 inch to two inches, from ear to ear, right across the front of my head. It looked like electricity was calling my edges. I don't know why. I'm doing everything right to make the rest of my hair grow but my edges are regressing. I henna and indigo my edges often to cover gray, could that be the culprit? I can't think of anything else. Please help me!

Well, congratulations on the progress that you have made with your hair.

Umm...how often do you wear headbands? What kind are they? Do they have teeth?

Regarding your edges, I've never used henna or indigo, but (from what I have read), you have to follow those treatments with a moisturizing DC. Do you manipulate your edges with combing or brushing? Do you protect them at bedtime by wearing a scarf?

I'm sure you'll discover the cause of these problems.

I wear a silk scarf to bead every night (for years). I wear head bands only sometimes. Lately I only wear headbands about twice a month.

Oh Ladies,
I forgot to say thank you for your reaponses. I don't always moisturize my edges after using henna. I will sit under the dryer with my henna/indigo while the conditioner is on the rest of my hair.

Where do you find Henna/Indigo? Is it very drying? I'm natural with very curly hair so my hair is super dry. :yep:

I get my henna from the Tap Dancing Lizard off of the hennaforhair website. I use African henna for relaxed hair (I think). When I first started using it last summer I found it very drying but when I started adding conditioners and oils, I no longer had a dryness problem.

Are you bunning everyday? Perhaps the stress of being pulled back in the same style or same direction too often has taken its toll? If you think this may be the cause, then you could try to do loose curly updos that won't stress your edges but still allow you to do low manipulation styles and look good. Also with loose updo styles, you can wear the silk bonnets to bed and relieve stress on your hair that way too. if this is not the issue, then perhaps experiment with silk bonnets for a while to see if that will help

I went a long while doing wet buns. I don't understand why it would break all the way in the front and not anywhere else. I'll try anything right now. My hair looked so crazy with ends standing straight up in the air. Maybe I do need to take a break from buns. I also have a satin cap hidden in my drawer.

Do you wear any half wigs? This happened to me from 1/2 wigs. I say baby the area. If you bun, take it down every evening and make sure it's not too tight when you bun. And also use something like Megatek/Ovation or some growth aid like bee mine or Boundless tresses to jumpstart growth in that area. HTH!

I have the same problem. The front one inch of my hair from ear to ear is broken and thin. I chalked mine up to the too tight scarf I've been wearing to bed for years. I started using a velcro mesh wrap instead. It's a smidge less tight while still holding my hair in a smooth position. But your problem could also be from half wigs, if you wear them. I'm sorry and I feel your pain. I am going to subscribe for potential solutions.

I don't know anything about the treatments you've been doing (like henna), but have you been doing any protein treatments along the way? Maybe it could help strengthen your hair - but only if the other things do not have protein (b/c you don't want protein overload).

You mentioned not understanding or seeing how bunning could break your hair off only in that area, but please consider that the hair along the hairline (for many people) may have different texture than other parts of the hair and may be weaker than, lets say, the hair in the center of their heads.

When you put your hair up, is it possible that you're putting more stress on that part by brushing/combing/manipulating it? I know I think my buns look jacked up if I can't get the front to lay right (which is why I dont do a lot of bunning) so it ends up getting manipulated more than the rest of my hair if I wear it that way...

Just a thought or two.

I lost a lot of hair in the front from a scarf that I had been wearing for years but, recently had been sleeping in tighter. I'm real careful to wear my head wrap much looser now or just sleep on a satin pillow.

I'm sorry to hear about your loose. Hang in there.

Hopefully you get the answers you need. I'mma keep my eye on this. I'm having edges problems....not severe. But my edges are soft or smooth or grow the way my nape does....and I'm starting to get annoyed. Hope you get some solutions.

It sounds like friction to me too, but you say that you henna the front and don't use a moisturizing deep conditioner after, so I think that is the cause as you have breakage in the place you henna. As I understand it, after henna you need to dc with lots of moisture.

maybe i misread something, but sitting under a dryer with henna/indigo in your hair send red lights flying in my head. If you expose henna (mixed with liquids) to air long enough, it will dry HARD, so this may very well be the beginning of the problem.

Also, I had a similar problem with a section of my hair that i always used to smooth down with a fine tooth comb several years ago. Needless to say, i dont do that anymore, but how do you smooth your edges to get nice looking buns? that might also be a problem

HTH

I'm dealing with the same thing right now. I recentl had surgery and I think it was caused by the anesthesia. I don't know what to do.

I have the same problem. However, its been that way for years/as long as I can remember. So far I started trying to grow in the front edges of my hair and although they have filled in they haven't even grown 2 inches, while the rest of my hair has grown 3 inches.
I think the front of my hair is either stunted or stubborn, but u live with what you've got right? maybe it just requires more patience than the rest of your head

To answer several of the questions:
I wear half wigs a lot (love them)
when I bun, I comb my hair down wet and tie it with a scarf. That keeps my edges down.
For a dry bun, I use almond glaze (hairveda) with my hand and smooth down the edges. I occasionally use a brush.

Thanks for the additional responses. I will experiment with all reccomendations until I find the culprit.

I am currently experiencing the same problem. My front and edges have broken off very evenly around my hairline. The hair isnt thin, but its very short, maybe about 2 inches long. And it had broken off very evenly, almost as if it has been cut. I think my damage is due to me spreading my relaxer too far up the strands in the front causing overlapping. So now I'm trying to be more careful with this in the future. Hope this helps.

I was wrong. The broken hair tiara I think is caused by my scarf. I've noticed that in the morning, my scarf has twisted completely around my head or my scarf has receded, exposing my hair from ear to ear. I don't want to tie it too tight, becuase my wrap comes out too flat or I cut off circulation. I'm not sure what to try at this point. Any suggestions ?
