I would like to start bringing my own products. I want to use the conditioners that I am reading about. (I DO NOT want to do my own hair. It's to bulky and nappy for me to manage a comb-out...) My question is: If I am bringing my own deep conditioner what would the pricing policy? (I want to have info before I approach my stylist) Would I expect to pay 1/2 (Like if she charges $10) since I brought my own should I pay $5? Advice please.

i always bring my own products. my hairstylist took $5 off of the price.....

Please give me a list of starter products (with specific name brands)

I wish you luck in terms of getting a reduction in the price at the salon. When I used to go to a salon and I took any products, I never got any reduction in price. I was always told I was paying for the service. It sucks, but maybe you will have better luck. Try to do some bargaining for sure!
Do you have a good detangling comb to take with you? Same with a rattail? If not, you might enjoy the combs at this site: http://www.hairsense.com The large detangling comb is awesome!!! I think I will be tossing my old plastic one soon. Sentimental value indeed
At that same site, be sure to check out the rattail with medium spaced teeth. That is something you should have for your stylist to use. I wish I had had something similar when I went to a salon for rollersets.
For a detangler, I would suggest Neutrogena Instant Shine Detangler Leave-In, Infusium 23, Original Formula and from what Supergirl has said, the Biolage Detangling Solution. I want to try the latter myself. With the Neutrogena, it is SUPERB. I've been using it of late and it is so nice. Infusium is tried and true but remember that some people can get hard hair with it. Just test it out
For a cheap in price only, but fabulous in toto conditioner, I would suggest you motor over to the grocery store for some St. Ives Moisturizing Vanilla and Edelweiss...your hair will be soft, silllllllky, and glorious. You know I am a 2b, but there are plenty of 4b's here using it with great results. Definitely check out that line. 20oz is about $2.59, some places as cheap as $1.99.

Henrilou, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get a price reduction for bringing your own products for the reasons that Jade mentioned. Hairdressers would say that you're paying for the service, and will probably think you're trying to cut in on their fees. Though it'd be interesting to hear them explain why they're charging you an extra $15 or $20 for your own deep conditioner!!! Good luck.

This is very smart. I don't understand why more stylists don't allow clients to bring their own products and take a few $$$ off their bill. It would save them money, too.

I always bring my own products to the salon.
Salons dilute their products to stretch them and to lower the concentration. I prefer using what I want to use. The majority of clients at my salon bring their own products or they purchase them from the salon!
Iive been paying the regular amount! No adjustments have been made as far as the amount I pay when I get a wash & set! When I bring in my own relaxer, they take $5 off the bill. They should do this for the wash & set too!
I am going to speak with the owner during my next visit!
