Breakage

Hello ladies I have a question...
My friends hair is breaking and she wants to know how to fix this before it gets worse. Over a month ago I was parting her hair and I saw a spot in her nape that was beginning to break. We didnt make a big deal out of it because it was very small. 2 weeks ago I blowdried & flatironed her hair because she couldnt make it to the hair salon. Now, 5 weeks since we first spotted the breakage, it is worse and has moved up further into her nape. She is currently 6 weeks post relaxer, and relaxes every 10 weeks. I searched and read many posts about breakage and I got some ideas but I figured I would get better help If I told you what she was doing and what products she uses.

Her Regimen:
She goes to the dominican salon and gets her hair Washed every 2 weeks with ORS Creamy Aloe shampoo.
She deep condititions each time with Lekair Cholestorol
She gets her hair rollerset and somtimes a Dominican Blowout
She greases her scalp with sulphur 8 twice a week
Baggies with ors olive oil lotion and seals with Jamaican black castor oil

I have no idea what started the breakage, but I think the blowdryer/flatiron combo made it worse. What do you ladies suggest that she does??

Bumping...

It sounds like she may need to stop using a blow dryer until the breakage stops... Maybe just do roller sets for a while and treat the breakage area with TLC... Everything else sounds OK... Hopefully some of the real hair pros will give some good advise....

Hmmm, not sure but it might be the baggying. Some people get breakage from it cuz it keeps the hair constantly wet. She should def lay off the heat until she figures it out. How does she wear her hair on a daily basis?

Thanks LadyZ and silverlotus for your input. She wears her hair mostly down and sometimes in a low pony tail. Her hair is past shoulder length but not quiet APL

I agree with LadyZ, she should discontinue the use of heat until she finds the source of breakage. Has anything in her regimen changed at all since she noticed her breakage? When did she start baggying?

Also, the low pony can be causing breakage in the nape. Is she putting her hair in a pony when wet? If she is, this can definitely be contributing to her breakage. When the hair is wet, it is a little bit more flexible, but when it's drying, it sort of contracts and may be causing the breakage in the nape. She should also change the location of her pony tails to prevent this, and also wait until her hair is dry before putting it in a pony tail. Make sure she is using a hair-safe scrunchie (satin/silk, or ouchless scrunchies w/o the iron part).

Also breakage signifies either a lack of protein or a lack of moisture. Does the Lekair provide moisture/slip to her hair? If not, I suggest a more detangling/moisturizing conditioner. A hot oil treatment with EVOO can add moisture to the hair, and assist in detangling.

If so, she should try to incorporate some protein into her regimen to strengthen her demarcation line during her stretch. Start with a light protein, like pre-poo with Hair Mayo. Or just use regular mayonaisse.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Kiesha!!! I really appreciate everyone's help. I'll send her the link to this so she can read everyone's responses.
