breakage at crown area, why?

i finally got my hair to grow to about 3 inches at the spot on my crown where it had broken off and it just broke again. it seems to have happened suddenly. i'm wondering if it is because the sun dried it out. it was very hot and sunny where i live for the past three weeks and i walked around outside. i noticed that my crown was particularly dry. i tried to moisturize and wonder now if i just need to a moisturizer in my purse to get that area several times a day. what do you ladies think? i'm very blue about it. i've been so good but somehow, i still have mild chronic breakage and lots in that spot. i admit that i do touch it too much trying to get volume there. i guess that could be the reason too. trying boundless tresses but i need to learn how to keep that hair once i grow it.

Kimba, from what I've read from you seems as though you have an idea of why. Moisturizers containing something with sun protection, a 'cool' head covering or hat, Aphogee 2 minute weekly and a monthly Aphogee 2 step may help. I have to run so cannot research names of sun protection moisturizers right now. HTH;)

I agree that a hat or maybe a wide headband (silky texture may help) You really should stop touching the area so much too. That won't help anything.

Are you doing protein treatments? How is the elasticity of your hair? You may have too much moisture and the hair is too stretchy and the strands have been compromised.

Mook!! Your 'Fat-braid' is beautiful. My braid looks anemic next to yours, what's the technique for doing it? It's so neat and pretty.
TIA

Kimba, the other ladies have wonderful advice. You could also try putting conditioner on those spots 10-20minutes before you wash to give them extra conditioning. Don't give up hope. My crown used to be my problem area and now, its one of my longest parts. I also lightly rubbed a little stimulating oil on my scalp at night 3 times a week.

hmm, could it be too much moisture? my hair is very dry. i tend to break from protein. i was doing henna treatments every week and then stopped for two weeks while on vacation. i wonder if my hair needed that strengthener. i prepoo usually with an oil mix or just amla if i can stand the smell. then i henna then deep condition. i wonder if the 2 week break from henna let it get weak. i am just so confused. i also used ORS hair mayonnaise as a prepoo on vacation because it was all i could find. maybe that was too much protein. i haven't figured out my hair yet alas.

If your hair is very dry, I would think that the problem is not enough moisture, as opposed to too much. I actually have just started to have the same problem as you a couple months ago. I also have fine and fragile 4a/4b hair, and started breaking at the crown and nape (I have no idea why). I don't know anything about henna and what effect it's having on your hair, but coincidentally, I pre-pooed w/ ORS hair mayo last week, and two days later, it seemed to start breaking again. So on the 3rd morning, I co-washed with Creme of Nature Nourishing Conditioner (which I found to be very moisturizing), and everything was suddenly right with my hair again. I've had little to no shedding or breakage since then. In my case, I think my hair doesn't like too much protein-2days before I used the mayo, I pre-pooed Mermade protein conditioner ... my hair came our fabulous that time, but I think doing it twice so close together is what made me break. My hairdresser told me awhile ago that I really only needed protein once every 8 weeks or so, or at least once between relaxers. I only did it more than once b/c I thought it might further strengthen the broken areas, but I think she was right about my hair. Also, changing my diet really helped me. I'm convinced that my eating habits are what caused my hair to break in the first place because I wasn't putting any stress on my hair whatsoever. I was skipping meals, and when I did eat, it was rarely healthy. After I started eating like I had some sense, my hair started growing back in those spots immediately and stopped breaking (I also had a trim when the breakage first occurred). I don't know if any of this will be of any help to you, but try not to be too discouraged. I'm frustrated every time I feel or see difference in length between where it's broken and the rest of my hair, but I just remind myself of all the people on LHCF that have had the same problem, and nursed their hair back to even longer lengths!
