I think this lady makes how easily you can overload on protein very very clear. :yep:

I personally have recently been posting about protein-overload as a possible reason as to why some ladies are complaining about persistant dry/brittle/breaking hair...against a tide of members who constantly recommend increasing the use of protein and/or use of a clarifier and i honestly shake my head :nono:.

If you have been using protein and your hair is still breaking then you need moisturising products and you need to actually read the labels before you put it in your hair. Do not rely on the fact that the label says hydrating or conditioning.

I am convinced this is the reason because it happened to me. Every single product i used for probably over a year contained protein. Nearly all product hypes/recommendations contained significant amounts of protein. Honestly when i look back, its a wonder how i have hair on my head. The breakage and shedding was quite frankly embarrassing and messy :nono:.
I'm only about 3 weeks into my moisture only regimen and my hair is still a tad hard to the feel but is soooo much better and breakage has significantly reduced. I made the mistake of putting a protein laden conditioner in my hair last week because i wanted to use it up; the label said Conditioning & Revitalising Soy Milk :perplexed. Instantly my hair turned to straw.

For those who haven't seen it i hope it gets the message across.

There are soooo many different types of proteins silk protein even if i used a bucket load of that on my hair it would never be hard.... hydrolysed wheat protein is in my gel my hair is fine with this.... KERATIN on the other hand:nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono: my hair is like glass waiting to snap and break off

Embyra - right, so imagine if you didn't realise that Keratin was a no-no for you and were unknowingly using Keratin in your shampoo and then some in your condish and then there was some other protein in your leave-in and then you used your gel and so and and so on......and then people are telling you to use more protein - breakage city.

Girl. Keratin is no joke. The only way I'll use that stuff is in Kera Pro shampoos and conditioners. Keratin in a leave-in is instant breakage for me.

I agree with you about different proteins having different effects. Silk protein seems mild in comparison to the others.

SMH i used organic uplifting shampoo that contains keratin NEVER AGAIN!! its one of those ingredients that im not even intrested in ''trying'' again just to see how it goes now im older and wiser

When she held up the Chi Silk i literally went :nono:. Before i cut out heat i would use that stuff once a week to flat iron my hair.
My saving grace whilst still blindly continuing to use protein laden products was that i had cut out all heat so no longer used it.

I think this makes one point really clear - what works for one person may not always work for the rest.

By trial and error, I found that my THRIVES with protein. However, this video and many other threads point to the fact that a good number of folks will find that protein doesn't work for them. There is no one size fits all approach to hair care for even just women of color.

The take away point is get to know your own hair and learn what works for it. While LHCF is great for sharing things that work for each one of us or things that don't work, it's still left up to each of us to find what works for your own hair without all of the hard and fast rules.

@Bublin, I had the exact opposite experience as you did. I went natural, with 4a dense, coarse hair, the hair that's not supposed to need protein treatments. Co-wash, super moisture DCs, baggying nightly, etc. left my hair a mushy, disgusting, overmoisturized mess. A H.A.M I tell ya !! So I gradually started incorporating protein again, and like mzteaze, my hair THRIVES off of it. For me, Aphogee 2-step, Mega-tek and Nexxus Emergencee are my trifecta of happy hair :yep:.

Every head of hair is so unique, and people have to be so conscious of this! We all reach our goals when we learn from the experiences of others but keep at the forefront our own goals and needs.

Similar story: 4a, coarse, dense, low porosity and went on a moisture, moisture, moisture regimen. My hair was mushy and overmoisturized. Incorporating certain proteins biweekly works very well for me. Anything oat (protein, flour) is a no go, but my hair handles soy and keratin very well. Depending on the formulation, I can handle small amounts of wheat protein.

@Bublin what does your moisture only regimen consists of?

Aicer For now i am only using products that do not contain protein.
For example
Pre Poo overnight - AO HSR (which is also a deep conditioner)
Shampoo - CON Argan oil Sulphate Free
Conditioner - (used to comb out my hair) Aussie Instant or Herbal Essence Soft&Smooth
Deep Conditioner - Keracare Humecto or Silicon Mask by Nunaat (this has a protein near the end of the list and even hen i can feel the slight hardness to my hair but there is no breakage and the shine it gives is amazing)
Leave-in - Keracare
Seal - Castor Oil mixed with Jojoba with few drops of Lavender and Rosemary.
Between washes - spritz with water, apply small amount of Leave-in and seal.

I don't plan of doing this forever. When i feel the time is right i will experiment one at a time with different protein (except for Keratin as i already know that is a :nono: ) and in small doses.

I use Nexxus Emergencee every other week and Dudley's DRC once every month. In between that I use Aphogee 2 minute.

I usually use Aphogee 2 minute weekly for years I have done this but I am finding my hair is lacking the much needed protein. So once I find I no longer need the heavy protein I will be back to my mild protein.

I clarify as needed (every 4-6 months). I still always think Clarifying is a great base, to clear the ways for what ever product to work at it's fullest.
