I completely know what you are going through.. I was natural up until this August and last december when I BC I was going through hair withdrawal. Not that my hair was down my back, but because my hair was natural I couldn't do that much with it that short. If your hair is long enough you can get braids, but I would try to stand clear from that. Sometimes getting braids hurt your natural naps cause they pull so hard. I actually learned to love my naps:p and just delt with cowashing everyday. OR I also use Sta sof fro spray if I didn't feel like wetting my hair and just used my hands to fluff my TWA up.

Also you can try doing a twist or braid out, and depending on how good your twists are intially, the twist out can last a couple of days.

I think braid are and excellent idea to grow out your hair, esp. if you're agonizing over the shrinkage and how long it's taking to grow out also it will help keep your hainds out of your hair, and low-no manipulation will really help you retain growth.
just make sure you mist your hair, and moisterize it daily and make sure your braids aren't too tight or too small sized. There are alot of tips and testimonials for growing hair out with braids. HTH

Ncarter, I'm at the same place. I'm thinking about braiding my hair this weekend. I already bought the hair, now I just gotta sit down and do it.

How long is your hair BMoreFly? Good luck with your project this weekend. Have you ever braided your own hair before?

me too! i said i was going to start tonight. well see...i am sooo not motivated to do it.

I think that braids are an excellent ideal. I think that washing more often is more drying in the winter than the summer. Just look at the effects it has on our skin. It is dryer and asher during these months. LOL !! I think the protection would be great and help to retain some length. I sugget braids the size of a pencil but not micros. Keep them in for 6 to 8 weeks at the most

Me either... That and I think my fingernails are too long now. But I don't wanna cut them. We'll see lol If no plans come up tommorow I'll try it out...

I agree that braids are a good idea. I have been doing thr CAG method for four months now and its a good way to keep your hands out of your hair. Plus you will be surprised at how much your hair has grown when you take the braids out. The braids will protect your hair in these cold months

I think braids would be a good idea. I can totally understand where you are coming from. I remember when I BC last December, my hair was about your length. I put it in braids then because I was frustrated with having to deal with it. I also know what you mean about the cold weather. I go to school in upstate NY and it's starting to get frigid here. I plan on having my hair braided tomorrow. I usually wash my braids once a week and moisture everyday with a braid spray or your own mixture. I use oil 2-3 times a week to seal in moisture. I hope this helps.

Id say it depends, if your hair gas benefitted from braids before then go for it, if not i'd say no, my hairs about the same legnth as yours, and i am never putting in any braids or a weave again, they just don't agree with me (thinning from weaves and breakage from braids). So i will be rocking my black head scarf for months.. lol

I would just add my gel, spritz w/ water and go. Easy style and not take long. I can't braid as of yet, so don't go by me.:lol:

Hey there,

Well, I know your hair pretty well so I'd say choose from these options:

1. Braids - Clarify and deep condition the day before, and apply a leave-in. But give your braider explicit directions a) do not braid tightly b) do not braid too small. You don't have to explain, just tell them you had a bad experience with braids. I'd spritz with diluted daily doctor (half dd, half distilled water and add some infusium 23. Put this all into a spritz bottle. You can add some rosemary essential oil, peppermint, etc. Get a fine tipped bottle and fill it with olive oil or jojoba oil. You can add a few drops of essential oil, whatever. Bring this with you to your braider and see if you can convince her to oil in between the rows of braids with it (even better if it's slighty warmed). If not, do it yourself. If you don't want to bring it with you, do it as soon as you get home. Oil it well, the oil will absorb right in and this step will definitely stave off the itchies, etc. (Individuals or kinky twists, it doesn't matter, the steps are the same)

2. Combcoils or fingertwists. Clarify and Deep condition your hair first. Cholesterol mixed with coconut milk, a little honey and olive oil is great. Rinse well. Apply a light leave-in. YOu can do fingertwists yourself and this is one of the only times where brown gel used correctly is a cheap alternative. I did some last night on a guy and i mixed aloe gel with vitamin e gel, a touch of olive oil and essential oils (pepp, rosem, lime, etc). His comb coils had medium hold, were soft and full of shine. Use something lighter if you can't use a light hand with the brown stuff. Comb coils the same.

3. Instead of washing and go, spritz and go if the cold is the concern. Slightly dampen hair and fingerstyle. Put those thin little headbands in if you need the security of accessories.

4. Color the fro. Doesn't have to be permanent. When my hair is at that in between length, I find that color gives me that extra punch that raises my i don't give a funk meter.

I'll stop there. PM if ya need.
Hugs!!

Thanks everyone.

Patient1 you do indeed know my hair so you can imagine what I'm looking like right about now.:dork:

I more than likely will go with the medium sized individuals in November. Maybe I'll go try a learn about pictures and siggies.

What about finger coils? I think that looks so gorgeous on ladies w/ TWA's!! I don't know if it's appropriate for me to put these ladies on blast but Africanafro and Naturally Divine (these are their Fotki album names --- I don't think they are members here) have beautiful hair @ the twa stage!

Check them out @: http://public.fotki.com/africanafro/ and http://members.fotki.com/ND305/about/ .

I'm in no way against braids, but if you're trying to learn your hair, I'm positive you'll come up with a lot of styles in the process of trying to figure out how you'll wear your hair. It happens to me all the time. I'll put my hair up some way and then something will pop into my head about how I can spice the style up --- it always works.

If you decide to braid it up, be careful, especially w/ these tight around the hairline braiders nowadays!
