Braiding Hair With Lots of New Growth

I am going to be getting my hair braided later on this evening (cornrows) and I am a little anxious because I have about 1 - 1 1/2 inches worth of new growth and I am not sure how my beautician is going to handle it. Will she blowdry the roots a bit or flat iron it to make it straight? I want to call her to ask her what the process will be but of course I left my address book at home.

Has anyone had their hair braided when they already had a lot of new growth? How did it work out for you? Thanks!

I would try to detangle my hair as much as possible considering you have so much NG. section you hair into 4 sections and start detangling from the bottom up. At least this way, if she does blowout the roots or iron the roots a bit it would be less potential damage/breakage on your already fragile hair. Usually when I get my hair braided and I have a lot of NG the stylist don't really complain, in fact many braiders like for you to have a little 'nap' for 'grabability'.

BLOW IT OUT YOURSELF!!

I'm sorry, but I find the African hair braiders a tad too heavy handed. Make sure it's blown and you can comb it through effortlessly before you go to get it braided.

Oops! Sorry ladies, let me clarify: My hair braider is also my regular beautician. She is going to wash and condition my hair before she braids it. I guess my anxiety is coming from the last touch up she gave me (I had about 3 inches worth of new growth) and she was telling me how tangled the new growth was and I could just hear her breaking hair as she parted it to apply the relaxer (by the way, she will no longer be doing my touch-ups!).

I was worried about how she would take my hair from wet to dry and how she would deal with my new growth before braiding my hair. I am bringing my jilbre shower comb with me and plan on suggesting/telling her to use it to help detangle my new growth during the washing process.

1 - 1 1/2 inches worth of new growth is not alot to me and I really want to wait until early to mid May for my touch-up. I usually go 5-6 months between touch-ups. For some reason my hair has had a real growth spurt this time around.

Anyways, thanks for all of your responses  .
p.s. usually my beautician seats me under the hood dryer to knock out some of the water and then she blow drys my hair the rest of the way. Would this be a good method to use with my two textured hair? Thanks!

Just to be safe, I'd everything @ home first and just let ehr do the braiding. If she had a hard time with your newgrowth before, she will again. Just wash and CO your own hair and then blow it out.

Sorry but I NEVER let a beautician wash and condition my hair before I put braids or weave in..

NEVER..

U should be deep conditioning your hair before you put braids in.. since u wont be able to fully wash ur hair the way u really want to with the braids in ur hair.

As a frequent braid wearer I totally agree w/this advice. I know she's your stylist but let her "style" your hair. Do the before maintenance at home.
