I got a consultation today and I'm getting my hair done on the 7th of November. I would like a good reggie for taking good care of my hair under the braids. Please help TIA MJ. I want to wear for a year.

I saw your curls in your fotki, very pretty:yep: You sure your hair isnt too soft to handle braids? Have you done them for a whole year before?

I've had the before, but not since I went natural. The only problem I ever had with braids is the matting of my hair under the braids, that's why I'm asking(hoping ) for some good tips. So I can keep the matting to a minimum.

Ahh okay cool, well what I do is blow my hair out before I do my braids and as I'm installing them I make sure to detangle and oil each section as I go. When I've finished braiding my hair I put a little mousse and oil sheen and thats all she wrote. From then on I would do baking soda washes every 1.5 weeks, I make sure to lightly oil my hair every day I tend to keep my braids or twists in for three weeks, the next time I do them I'm gonna try to force myself to keep it in for a full month if not more by redoing the perimeter:yep:

But to keep it fully real, I think braids may be too much stress on your soft curls:ohwell:, I would go more gentle and keep doing what your doing with the finger coils and two strand twists but I wish you success in whatever you do:yep:

Thank You BMP, I'm not doing them myself, I getting them done by a braider. From meeting her and talking to her about my hair and what I need I think she'll do a great job and my hair will flourish if I take great care of my hair under them.

I just started wearing braids (cornrows actually) and I add braid spray each morning and each night. BRX is the brand that was recommended. I washed my cornrows and also conditioned them and then added Eco Styler olive oil gel to smooth them down. I had them in for 3 weeks.

I had new cornrows put in yesterday as the base for my curly twists. I plan to use the same technique for washing but without the gel since my cornrows are totally covered.

For box braids or any kind of loose braids, I have noticed that lots of ladies use the http://www.growafrohairlong.com/braidreg.html regimen.

I second this notion. This method took me from above ear to neck length in one year.

Also, buy a mesh cap/stocking cap to wash your braids in. It will reduce the frizz & help your braids stay looking neat past wash day. See this thread for more details:

I bough a mesh cap w/holes in it from Wal-Mart for like $3.00 and it works wonderfully! It was in the afro-hair section.

Good luck.
