Braid out question.

Dr. Naptrl :)
I just took some individual braids out of my hair. My hair was sooo moisturized and the braid out was soo defined that I didn't even wash my hair. I'm just wearing it! I'm afraid to wash my hair now, because I don't know if I can get it back like this! Any tips on braid outs? I'm natural with 4-6 inches of hair!

try cornrowing in layers, using a serum and/or setting lotions. cornrow your hair straight back and roll it at the end with cold wave rods with paper or satin rollers.

I can't cornrow to save my life! I was thinking about individual type braids like the big chunky ones people do!

I do mine in about 20 individual braids. Usually the only thing I put on my hair is some sort of butter or an oil. If I used rods on the ends I put some aura humectant on my ends and roll them. I'd let them sty in a day or so if I couldnt do that I'd sit under the dryer. There are pics in my original album of braid outs I've done. HTH /images/graemlins/smile.gif

you can do that as well /images/graemlins/smile.gif do some individual braids

Make sure when you take them down you have coated oily fingers. This is key for naturals, it'll cut back on your frizz big time /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

i know exactly what you mean. i wouldn't want to wash my hair after taking braids down because of the shiny, uniform waves. it has taken me alot of trial and error to recreate the look. i'm still perfecting my techniques /images/graemlins/laugh.gif but i'm getting closer each time.

i've tried it with individuals and recently taught myself to cornrow. it ain't pretty, but it works. for me, the results are alot better with the cornrows. and it seems like the messer the cornrows, the better it turns out... lucky for me. /images/graemlins/rofl.gif

i put the same products on that i use for the bun, but i also add my body butter. i find that it stays shiny longer, doesn't frizz and doesn't expand much if i go heavy on the products. this is particularly important to avoid the frizz.

the style usually last 3-4 days. it would be longer, but my ends just look dry no matter what i put on them. i have yet to find the perfect product to address that issue...

Do you guys braid your hair while it is wet or dry? I know, well I think /images/graemlins/wink.gif, wet is better. I've never tried it wet due to shrinkage, but just curious if others braid dry.

don't know if this is helpful, but when i want to avoid shrinkage with a braid-out, after i wash my hair (afternoon) i put it in about 4 big braids (no product) and sleep on it overnight. in the morning it's still damp, but not soaking wet so when i braid it in the smaller individual braids (with product), there is a lot less shrinkage. and i think braiding damp hair means that the waves you get after you take out the braids, once it dries, are much more defined and last longer (around 5 days at least, for me). photos of my most recent braidout (this past summer) are on my fotki page.

I get better braid-outs on dry hair. This thread inspired me to do a braid-out just a few minutes ago /images/graemlins/laugh.gif ...my hair is in 6 braids now! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

WOW SUNCYPRESS! Your braidouts are BEAUTIFUL!!! /images/graemlins/smile.gif How often do you re-braid your hair when doing a braid-out for a week or does your hair hold the style pretty well???

My hair stylist would put setting lotion and mousse on my hair before doing two strand twists all the way back in rolls of 8. She would sit me under the dryer and set my hair for twenty minutes. I would normally leave it in for a couple of days and then tease it out. I have a sample of it in my photo album.

I braid my hair into 4 chunky braids, on airdried hair. My waves are not always as defined as it would be on damp hair though. I haven't tried cornrowing (don't know how) or making several braids yet.

Dutchess (relaxed) and Nay (natural) are two of many ladies who have mastered the braidout technique. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

my braid outs look half decent but i havent worn one out yet...im having to switch products for winter air...im makin notes from this thread and the other one..i had crispy ends today with a twistout...maybe i need to get some s-curl or somethn..sta-sof-fro aint cuttin...im testing wild growth oil again too(i think its gonna be wGO for winter crispies and sta-sof-fro for summer crispies lol)

Thanks soo much ladies, for your suggestions! I washed my hair and put it in lots of little individual braids. WEll, braids in the front and when I started getting tired, 2 strand twists in the back!!
First, I did an ACV rinse. I had a lot of scalp build up from surging and S-curlin all month with the braids.
Next, I washed with Thermasilk clarifying shampoo.
Then, I conditioned with CON conditioner and detangled my hair. Combed out all the dead stuff from having braids...
After the CON, I put on Le Kair Cholesterol with Aloe, put on a plastic cap, covered it with a head wrap and went to bible study.
After much praying /images/graemlins/laugh.gif, I came home and washed my hair out and braided it. I got under the dryer for a while (Until I blew a fuse /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif and then just slept in the braids/twists.
When I got up this morning, I took the braids out and it looked great!!!! I sprayed it with s-curl a little to cause some shrinkage b/c I had a couple of straight ends.
I want a little more definition, but it's extremely soft and I think it's great for my first try! I think just doing CO washes from now on will help, too. I just had to clarify b/c of all that build up. and the ACV rinse alone just wasn't cuttin it!! /images/graemlins/frown.gif
