Which is the least damaging?

I'm going to be doing either one of these to try and extend my stretch to at least 10 weeks  so I really need to know which one will cause me the least damage.

Why do feel the way you feel?

TIA

***Oh yeah, I plan to do these myself based on the great tutorials on fotki...

I think the blowout can be slightly more damaging. It usually involves rotating the brush through the hair and then pulling it, however gently, through the hair. And usually more than one pass is made on a section.

With a flat iron, the way I do it anyway, I just detangle the section and pass the flat iron over it. I usually set my hair on rollers first, to give it body, so it comes out looking similar to if I had a blowout.

Doing it myself, I would have less damage with flat ironing as I don't know how to do my own blowout and would probably lose a lot more hair.

I voted flatironing being the LEAST damaging while blowdrying being the MOST damaging.

Atleast with flat ironing there is no pulling and tugging involved. With a blowout you are directing your strands to high heat, and then while it is at it's most vulnerable state you have the nerve to be pulling at them with a brush. Just isn't too healthy ya know.

I don't see nothing wrong with them once in every blue moon, but since you asked I would def. go with the flat ironing.

So my hairdresser does a blowout and seems to use a small amount of heat protectant: what should I do?

I'm thinking of going back to braids?

Hmmm... so I'm seeing it as flatironing being the best??? Guess that's better since that's what I know how to do... just looking at Sylver's tutorial was making me wanna roundbrush :look:

Flat ironing is the least damaging to me. It usually only takes one or two passes over each section to get the look I want. With a blowout, I have to go over the section a few times.

Hmm I thought most people would say flat ironing because of the high temp. For me blowdrying is alot of manipulation which can lead to more shedding, flat ironing leaves my hair feeling more moisturized.

Unless you use a nozzle, the heat from a blowdryer isn't restricted to just one area. Also, the manipulation as others mentioned is much more prone to cause damage. Moreover, the heat can't be controlled like in a flat iron. Many of them have adjustable heat settings. I think the flat iron is better because it gives you a finished, smooth look. Do you rollerset? If so, then that would be less overall exposure to direct heat. If you rollerset then decide to blowdry or flatiron then it would not be as harsh on your hair because only the roots would be exposed to heat. HTH

Agreed. I say airdry in bands and flat iron. Blowdrying is just too much stress on the hair.

Well, I did not vote but let me just chime in. Last night I decided that I would blowout my roots since I'm over 12 wks ng (only because of a banquet tonight). I have not used a blowdryer in over 2 yrs. Well, let me just tell you, that 10,000 degrees hot fire spitting hunk of plastic is gone back in the trash can of memories. I used CHI silk infusion on each piece of hair to help protect it from the heat. I opt to used the small comb method on the roots. I have a white bathroom floor and I could see pieces of hair everywhere, long, medium, short, you name it. Yes, I do have straight hair with body today, but I did not do such a great job on my roots. So for me it was not worth it. All I can say is hats off to you blowout/blowdryer queens and more power to you! I can't wait to poo and cond my hair tomorrow.

ENOUGH!!! Decision made... when the times come only a flatiron will be coming near my head. :lachen: :lachen: I LOVE the way you put that!!! toooooo funny!!!

As for damage, I dunno they are both heat so... :dunno: More damage, less damage, they're both damaging.

I prefer a blow out. A flat iron does nothing for me. It's puffy again in hours and I've ironed my hair for nothing.

I think blow dryers are less damaging. Pro-flat ironers have good points, but technique is important with any heated tool and for me I loose less hair if I blow dry than if I were to air dry and then flat iron. My thought is that a blow dryer isn't as hot, it doesn't directly get to each and every single strand, like you have to do with a flat iron in order to get uniformed smoothness and a good blow dry will leave you not needing to flat iron.

I think the flat iron is the way to go unless you are skilled at blowouts and can do them on medium heat. Either way, I recommend that you keep the heat no higher than "medium" (around 300 degrees) if you are going to flat iron and use a good heat protectant.

My hair seemed to thrive a lot better when I was getting blowouts as opposed to flat ironing. I don't think flat ironing in moderation is bad, my hair just does better with blowouts.

I agree my hair does better with regular blow outs(less breakage) than flat ironing.. its dry but no breakage??? I also have asked 2 different Dominican stylist if the blowdryer or flatiron was less damaging and both said blowdryer is less damaging... My stylist is very gentle although the heat of the dryer is hot she just grazes my hair with it....

get outta my head! I was thinking about asking the same question the other day.

i say blowout at a dominican salon. as hot as those bad boys are..with the metal barrel hairbrush too.... a flat iron at home on a medium setting can't be that bad.

I think that the blow dryer is more damaging- at least it is on my hair. Also, it makes my scalp SO dry! I took a break from my stylist and did my own rollersets. I went back after a month to get it done for graduation and the next day my hair was itching like crazy!!:eek:I always thought that I had dry scalp, but I noticed that when I was doing my own hair (without heat), it didn't itch! Or maybe I'm just crazy...:dizzy:

I debating whether or not to get a domincan blow-out or flat iron my own hair because I've never really did it before and it's for a special occasion. :ohwell:

I say the flatiron is more damaging.

Blow drying depends on the type of blow dryer, the speed and temperature of the heat, and drying the whole head as opposed to dividing and drying the hair into sections. There is a proper technique.

Of course, heat is damaging in and of itself, but, with the proper technique, one can minimize the damage.

Yes I would have thought the blowdryer to be less damaging too. But I'm biased because I prefer the way my hair looks after a blow-dry than after a flat-iron.
Northernbelle or Seeminglysweet, do you have any good tips on how to do a good and not damaging blowdry?
Thanks!

I think blowdryers are more damaging than flatirons

--If you airdry instead of blowdrying, you retain more moisture, and you loose less hair ( i dont even think you can loose hair airdrying)

--Blowdryers damage the cuticles of your hair more than flatirons, and flatirons dont require much hair manipulation

--You can airdry, and use a flatiron on heat setting 1 and still look good, blowdryers need some pretty high heat to go okay

When you say blowout are you talking about dominican blowout or a regular blowout.

Both are damaging and it also depends on what look you are going for. Now if you are going for bouncy hair like Annalynne Mccord then I would suggest just doing a blowout. You dont have to worry about using curling irons and such to get back the bounce. And if you know how to use a round brush correctly and get the correct one then you wont have to keep rotating the brush to get the hair smooth. You can also get a flatironed straight look with a roundbrush. You would used an oval shaped one with porcupine bristles (nylon + boar) rather than pure boar bristles.

Now if you are going for a straight look and want to spend the least amount of time dong your hair then just use a denman to straighten the hair first then flat iron. If you have time, then just rollerset the hair, do a silk wrap and flat iron the hair.

I'd say the blowout is least damaging. If I ever do blowouts, I'm only blowing out the roots since I rollerset the length of my hair.

i would say the falt iron does since it delivers an even amount of distributed heat and with the ceramic plates that helps even more. Depending on the iron it can add shine to the hair.

I agree with the majority...blowouts can be very damaging. Its something about the pulling that made me clench my teeth everytime I went for one.

after seeing whitedaisy's (sp) thread i would say blow dry on cool with a comb attachment to stretch the hair out and then flat iron at 350 or below. :ohwell:

lesson learned....
