Blow Dryers

I went to the beauty supply today to find a simple handheld blow dryer I totally got intimidated by the big variety. Some were as low as $9.99 while others were as high as $40. I want the best for my hair, so does the type of handheld hair dryer you buy really makes a difference? Is it really worth me spending $40 because if it is I'll spend the money, but I dont want to waste money neither. Any suggestions ladies? ( Need some feedback I want to buy one this morning).

I just bought several styling appliances myself and it can be so intimidating! There are sooo many out there.

I think that they are all pretty much similar. You want to choose one that is comfortable for you to use. Not too heavey or bulky that you find it difficult to handle while blow drying. It should have enough wattage to dry your hair quickly and with several settings (hot, warm, cool). The latest technology is Ion and/or Tourmeline.

What really matters is your blowdrying technique (moving the dryer down the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle instead of blowing the hair up and out which causes the cuticle to raise.)

I spent around $25 for mine (piurchased at Walgreens) and it works just fine.

Hi My Honest advise - because I care about the health of your hair, would be not to purchase one. Avoid direct heat at all costs. I find the better the dryers, the hotter they can get and can lead to trouble. Good Luck!

i have the chi ionic dry. it shoots cool and hot air while you are drying your hair. although that is a little more expensive dryer
i love it though!!

ITA! One of the best things I ever did for my hair was to give up blow drying. Period. But that's just me . . .

I agree, blowdryers can be detrimental to healthy hair. However, I did purchase a CHI Rocket to use in cases of extreme emergency (I've used it twice since March). I think investing in a good dryer is important, because it reduces drying time, damage, manipulation, etc. The CHI dries my hair in 5-10 minutes, as opposed to the 20-30 minutes my old dryer took. Good techinique is important too.

I've heard great things about the ion and tourmaline blowdryers. They are supposed to be less damaging to the hair. I'm tossing out my old blowdryer and upgrading soon.

I just bought a new blow dryer last night. REASON...
I cracked (or I should say - my hair cracked) the old one.

I'm transitioning. and to say my hair is thick would be an understatement.

So I was blow drying with my trusty old vidal sasoon yesterday and the poor thing just couldn't handle the "back to Africa" state of my roots.

No I wasn't raking through (I'd never do that) I was actually going through in small sections. "crack" right near the handle.

I've realized that FOR ME with this transition. I will be needing direct heat.
I did no direct heat for a wile at the beginning of this trans and I saw good results. but now, almost 23 weeks post, this is a different head of hair.

I decided to buy a 1875 WATT Gold n Hot. I used it last night and I really like it, the results were great. hope this helps.

Thanks Serenity for your advice. Your hair is beautiful, what alternatives do you use opposed to blow drying?

Let us know how you like the Gold N Hot. After seeing this thread, I went out and bought the Ion Conditioning Tourmaline dryer from Sally's. I figured it couldn't hurt since if I didn't like it I could always return it. I really love this dryer. My hair was ultra-moisturized, even after blowdrying, and when I flat ironed it turned silky and shiny. And my hair still feels ultra-moisturized hours and hours later. I'm buying the claims that the tourmaline technology helps to lock in moisture to the hair. Two thumbs up!

I like to airdry my hair after washing and use Caruso Steam Rollers for curls. I understand airdrying is not for everyone. Be sure to use a really good heat protectant when you blow your hair!

Excellent. I'm glad I could help. I really like i too. I used the CHI silk to blow dry. then I flat ironed. my hair feels super silky.
