what is the consensus? is mixing blonde/light colored hair into braids weird especially if you have naturally very dark hair?

i am going to get box braids soon and i want to play with color. plus it's summer. that monochromatic tan look is always appealing to me. but i'm not as tan and lovely as beyoncé.

i will harken back to a time around 1998-ish when beyoncé used to sport such braids.

good? bad? ugly?

be honest, friends.

i dont mind 2 tone braids as long as its not like black and blonde lol. more like honey brown and dark brown or something like that. but all blonde braids? im gonna say no.

I like! I'm also doing braids this summer and will probably mix 4 and 27. Might throw in a few strands of 613. Then again, I'm not your average bear so funky/stand out stuff is right up my alley.

When you say "mix" do you mean doing one basic color all over and then doing some strands of the light or something else?

I want her twists!

Back on topic: I think it's look very cute. You may have to play with the ratio, but it's a cute look imho. Of course, this is coming from someone who rocked blonde bangs with my natural 1b hair in high school.

i like a mixture of the hair that comes mixed (dark color and a light color) along with a solid lighter hair that is custom mixed with mixed hair...

i want to have the front highlighted appearance like the first beyoncé photo but all of my hair must be mixed in different gradations from front to back.

i went to the BSS today and wanted to find some hair to mix up... cuz i know no braider is going to have patience for my custom wants. lmao. i saw a pack of 1B/27... i liked the 27 but i thought the 1B was too dark. it's also subtle when braided.

in all of my contemplating i bought 8 bags of a combo of 1B/30(reddish brown) and solid 30... but i am starting to think that it won't give me the lightness i want....

maybe i need 4 and 27 and something lighter........ watch, i'm going to have 30 bags of hair over the next few days....

Ah gotcha.

I say go for it! That first pic looks a lot like...

I really like what she's doing. But it is a very extreme look.

Yes, you need a 4 and 27. Don't do 1b/27 for braids with your complexion.

good call. hmm. maybe 1B/30 can be my "winter look". thank goodness the hair is cheap.

but even though i'm not as dark as beyoncé? i'm more like Alicia Keys tone...maybe i should go tanning... :lachen: i get consumed by maintaining a "look".

I really love the first 2 pics of Beyonce's braids but I think the third is a bit drastic. I would love to do 1 or the 2nd braids/twist. But for me unfortunately my grays are poppin in to quick in the front, and none in the back. Heck I would probably have to rebraid every other week to keep up with color I mean.

It really depends on your skin's undertones (red, yellow, olive). You said you are more of AK's tone..I honestly dont see blonde looking good with that kind of tone. I would be afraid of taking away from the skin/hair contrast. This is the lightest I would go if I were AK's complexion:

hmmm. she's way more red in that photo. i'm more golden toned.

here we go. haha, me in a blonde wig. i will delete this later....

deleted.... i'm just pale. maybe closer to nicole richie. or denise from the cosby show.

The main problem with any blonde extensions and dark hair is when your hair starts to grow out (after 2 weeks) it looks AWFUL...extensions close to your natural color really help to camoflauge the fuzz, frizz and new growth....if you wont keep em very long, i would say go blonde...

ITA with BeautyAddict1913. This is why when I do mine I use what I call "Double-Dipped" hair. I've attached a picture of my hair with blond'ish braids. I used two toned hair, with a 4/27 mix, 4 on the top half, 27 on the bottom.

I blended this with hair that was all #4 to tone the color down some.

I think it will look good. When I wear my hair in box braids I always get 1b/27 mix hair for the middle of my hair and straight 27 for the front of my hair. I think the only time blonde braids look bad with dark roots is when your whole head is blonde braids. When my hair started to grow in, it didn't look bad to me. Sorry about the quality of the pictures and that big yellow fuzz ball one is from when I was 15 and the other is from when I was 18.

i think that it's great if it's your hair color or close to it..but if you have 1b hair and just want to buy a pack of blonde braiding hair, i don't think it's a good look.

:yep:

To help those trying to help you, lol, I'll confirm that, yes, you are closer to her complexion than Alicia Keys', maybe even a tiny bit lighter (then again, I met you in the winter).

No opinion on the braids, I'm not good with mixing colors.

methinks i'm going hunting for some #4 and #27 in the morning. as long as i blend it together enough, i think it will look OK with my natural hair color. my ends will just look lighter than the root. but i won't be -blonde-. :)

maybe i'll buy 2 packs of hair and do a braid on my own hair before fully committing.

i just liked how my hair looked here but i always wanted it just a little bit lighter/warmer.....

thats really pretty, what kind of hair did you use. Did you three strand at the top and two strand the length, im just trying to figure out if the hair unraveled.

Doll,

Do you, "life is short!" It's only hair, if you get tired of it, you'll change. If you decide you don't like them, you'll change. If you don't do it you'll wonder.

So, go for it and enjoy.

Signed,

The woman who recently bleached four times to get it up and big chopped and guess what . . . it's all good.

LL

Just make sure the blond is not to brassy (to golden). Us the "blonde" only as a highlight and mix it with several diffrent shades of browns.

i used kanekalon hair for this. i believe that my braider did one turn of 3 strand at the top and then continued with the twist through the entire length, and then tied off the bottom. the ends were dipped in hot water. they never came undone. the twists were fun. :)
