Bleach?!

Do any naturals have very blond or very light blond hair? How do you take care of it???

I want to dye some of my hair a very very light blond, but I don't want to damage it to the point of no return :perplexed

I know you asked for naturals and I'm relaxed. But I just wanted to warn you that the bleach may cause your curl pattern to lengthen and become kinda diluted. Not for everyone. But just a precaution. I hope it all goes well :-)

I've had highlights. DC'ing & protein treatments helped me a great deal. I DC'd once a week and used protein twice a month. Moisture is very important since natural hair is already prone to dryness and bleaching hair makes it even more dry.

I'm natural and have blond highlights. I am sure to use some form of protein every wash day (I'm using Joico K-pak at the moment), I always DC with a moisturizing conditioner under the hooded dryer with a plastic cap (right now using PM Supercharged moisturizer mixed with olive and coconut oils). I also use porosity control every other week. I also avoid shampoos with sulfates so I use either the original CON or Loreal EverStrong shampoo. I am really diligent about keeping up with my regimen since I don't want breakage and so far I'm doing just fine in that department :yep:.

I avoid cowashing in between washes, since I think my water is hard and I don't have a filter. Frequent cowashing seems to make my hair drier.

I'm still playing around with daily moisturizers as I've never really found one that I really like.

I got highlights in Jan and I haven't had any issues. I cowash every couple of days, DC every other week, steam about once a month. I recently texlaxed so all this has changed.

I missed this! I didn't know you texlaxed. How is it working for you?

Subbing. I am dying to bleach. (see what I did there LOL I'm so corny)
Anyway I need a change so I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread

Do you mind telling how often you wash and what your routine is like. For example, what do you mean exactly by some type of protein? A protein conditioner after shampoo, or a protein DC? Thanks.

I don't know much about caring for highlights, but the healthiest method is to lighten your hair to it's fullest potential (3 shades) then repeat the same process later on. This is done without bleach. The picture I attached shows both colors.
My regimen is not much different than any other natural to be honest. I deep condition weekly, and roller set. Sometimes I'll straighten, but never more than twice a month, and I cut blow-drying completely out of my regimen. I'll use Roux Porosity control every one in awhile, but protein makes my hair hard so I rarely use it. I have a 4A hair type. If you don't have to bleach...DON'T. It's hard even for white girls to maintain healthy bleached hair. I've heard too many horror stories.

ETA: I forgot to add moisturize every day! But I'm sure you already do that. Riiiight? :bat:

KandyCurls How is this done?

I love your hair, I saw it about a month ago in a post and have been secretly wanting color!

My hair is red and blonde and I pretty much co -sign with what everyone here said :yep: I love Aphogee 2 step and do it about every 2 months or so. (before my hair used to break and shed profusely before I started protein) I also Co-wash on a pretty regular basis with no troubles. I need to DC more often but I honestly don't remember the last time that I did.

I went from here:

to here:

terressntials.jpg

I wash in either acv or terressentials
shake excess
qhemet MTMG + BRBC
air dry
then AHTB & strand twist every nite
sleep on satin pillowcase
untwist w/fragrance oil & style in AM.

I have had no problems with breakage
and I am sure to extra moisturize after coloring retouches
w/ BRBC.

I'm not natural anymore: but when I was:

I first did an ash blonde colour (if you don't want red tones look for colours that say "ash" or "cool") I did a two step Aphogee, then two weeks later did my highlights with bleach (from the drug store with the cap). My hair has always been protein friendly, so I wash and DC mostly with light proteins, for me I found its easier to moisturise my hair (overnight DC) than to fix a protein imbalance.

I am now relaxed and my hair has/had no problems using a similar regimen.

FYI when you first lighten your curls may very well "drop" after a few protein treatments they should get back tighter, always balance protein with a good moisturising DC and be sure to check that your hair's not sensitive to protein.:yep:

Im so glad the thread popped up. I will be getting blond streaks in my hair soon so im glad i found this. Thanks ladies!

For me I concentrated on protein during those first few weeks after I colored. I did alot to my hair within a short time going from purple, to red, to honey blonde, to bleached highlights, then adding in lowlights. For 50% of that I used rinses ( semi-permanents). Now all I really do is co-wash and deep condition. I stocked up on Roux products and I dont even use them anymore.
I started out bleaching a portion of my hair in the front and then dying it to the desired color. I used a toner on my bleached highlights.

Shoot, if i'm taking the precaution of going natural for healthier hair, the least I can do is have fun with it.

Remember to always to a heavy protein treatment before and after your bleaching. Always apply the bleach to the middle and ends first, then the roots. Your roots process quicker because of body heat. Using a toner will take away the brassy, red tones. I like using Wella Toners. If you wind up with an orangey bleached color, your going to want to neutralize that with it's complimentary color. Remember the Color Wheel.

If your hair has yellowish tones, neutralize with a violet toner. Orange with blue, etc. I like White Lady or Ivory Lady.
Also I wouldn't go higher than a 20 volume developer even with bleach. It'll take longer to process, but your hair wont be as badly damaged. Never use a 40 vol. Stay away from overuse of heating implements and I don't recommend box dyes. If you don't want to be blond, you can always bleach first, protein treat, then dye to desired color.

I wash & DC once a week. I use joico kpak reconstructor after I shampoo and before my DC. I always DC with a moisturizing conditioner mixed w/ oils to balance out the protein. The kpak is not a hardcore protein so I don't have any problems with using it weekly. My alternate protein is Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor. Oh and I very rarely use heat (only when I go to the salon to get my color touched up) so I'm sure that helps control breakage and dryness. :yep:

well, i guess i'll just be going against the grain and advise against it. it can completely change your curl pattern and can be very damaging to your hair. i got highlights last year that ended up being blonde and it was the worst thing for my hair. my hair still broke off regardless of weekly dc, daily moisture, only co-washing, using non sulfate shampoos, little to no heat, and protective styling. a friend of mine's sister dyed the top portion of her hair blonde, and it wreaked havok on her hair as well, despite her too being natural. personally i wish i'd never dyed it. but this is just my experience. just wanted to give a different point of view.

@Msmchy

I think for going that light and lifting to a say level 9 from a level one, you'll have to go with a higher volume of developer for sure. The best way to maintain the integrity of your hair is by breaking up the chemical processes over time and definitely doing protein treatments in between.

It also depends upon how blind you want to go. A honey blond or a golden blond will be alot easier to acheive than say, an ash or white blond. Highlights in different levels of blond can add the dimension you want without doing potential lasting damage to all the hair, but any bleach you use will change the texture of your hair to a degree. I suffered some damage after I used heat on the bleach portions and now I'm slowly cutting those peices out.
