For conditioning, I use a thermal heat cap for 10 to 15 minutes with my deep conditioner..For anyone interested, it's called Professional Conditioning Heat Cap by Thermal Spa. It's moisturizing penetrating and theraputic. It doesnt dry out the skin scalp and hair like bubble dryers.

Can this heat cap be found at Sallys?

Thank you suga for posting the list. Very interesting--wish I'd known to use a neutralizing shampoo after swimming when I was 12. I swam right after a relaxer & lost a butt-load of hair

"Uneaten vegetables" (#4) --that's cute the way they worded that!

That was my story - chlorine mashed up my hair and only now (since I'm much more aware of hair and body care in general) is my hair growing nicely again

Ditto! I know better now (re shampooing straight away) but I can't do it. No more swimming for me either, I was about 12 the last time I went!

21.Virgin hair being worn loose

???? So relaxed hair can be worn loose, but not virgin hair? I don't get it.

[/ QUOTE ]Me either! Although my hair did tangle when I wore it in an afro puff, but all i need is a conditioner wash and a wide tooth comb to fix the problem.

23.Going to bed leaving hair loose

interesting, i wonder if this applies to me. i wear a satin cap every night, but i don't do anything particular with my hair (as in I don't wrap it or curl it, i just put the cap on). I hope they are not referring to this.

Thanks for the info

. It makes sense that staying under a hooded dryer would still dry hair out because it is suppose to be heated moisture (steam, wet towel, etc) that "deep conditions." Also, I have read Lisa Akbari's "The Black Woman's Guide to Beautiful Hair" and she recommends putting conditioner on hair every 10 minutes or so of dryer time. Example, put conditioner on hair, sit under dryer for 10-15 minutes, put on more conditioner, etc. What I do if I am sitting under the dryer for any length of time with a conditioner is mist my hair with water, I simply lift the plasitic cap, spray and then go back under the dryer.

I would like to get a copy of this issue. Will you please post the month and issue number for me. Thanks so much for the information, cause I sit under a hooded dryer for my hot oil treatments and for deep conditioning each week. So far I've had no problem, but now, well I just dont know.

Sure-it is the Glam Review issue for 2004. It is on display until February 24. It has several issues on the cover with a bow on it. That's all of the info I see relevant now.

For clarity on neutralizing after chlorine and salt water; does that mean the regular neutralizing shampoo that you use after a relaxer or a special shampoo that you use after swimming?

Ladies, I think when they are saying virgin hair they mean hair without any additives (such as weaves, braids, etc?) does this make some sense?

I need to go ahead and subscribe to this magazine. I bought 6 issues this year. I really like it.

I'll save a few dollars by subscribing, but $45 for 10 issues?

I guess moist heat (hair steamer) could be another alternative to dry heat. It's said to cut the required amount of time in half.

Very interesting info on this thread. Reapplying conditioner every 10 mins.

I feel ya-I had to think twice about buying the one issue-How about you do this-buy just the end of the year edition like I did. They seem to recycle a lot of the info contained in the magazines. Is that you in your avatar?

Thanks. I think I'll stick to the year-end wrap up issue.

13.Thyroid imbalance

This is the worst!

Mercy girl! I hear ya. In the beginning of this pregnancy my hair was coming out and coming out. I told my sucky military healthcare personnel and she told me to condition. Turns out, i have a cyst on my thyroid. The shedding tapered off after a few months, but I'm SO afraid of when I have this baby and the hormones run rampant again, coupled with my thyroid disorder. Oh, MERCY.

I really fail to understand how sitting under a dryer with conditioner on the hair topped with a plastic cap can dry it out.
scratchchin.gif
The moisture cannot evaporate with the plastic cap on the top. If that were the case, when you removed the cap after coming from under the dryer you'd have crispy hair. Whatever moisture that would evaporate would have to condensate and settle back on the hair, that is if the dryer were so hot that we were actually "cooking" hair. I'm trying to give ya'll a visualization, so bear with me. If I put a chicken in a baking pan covered with butter and a lil' bit of water in the bottom of the pan (the hair is damp, after all when conditioner is placed on it), then covered it with foil and put it in the oven, after a while when I go back, I'll usually find more liquid in the bottom of the pan and a ton of steam come off when I remove the foil. The liquid couldn't evaporate and instead formed condensate in the bottom of the pan. This is usually a juicy bird when eaten. Bake the same chicken for the same amount of time without a cover and you'll be eating cardboard. The cooking without a cover has caused tons of moisture to evaporate. The part I will agree with is sitting under the hairdryer without any covering for long periods of time. I don't like sitting under a dryer without a cover period, although my hairdresser does wet sets.... Does this make sense?

Those that are experiencing dryness after sitting long periods of time under the dryer with a conditioner,is the time you're sitting there specified by the manufacturer of the conditioner? Usually they are the best ones to give you the optimal amount of time that you should sit under the dryer for best results.
smile.gif

I didn't get this at first, but I think it's the timing of it. I do notice that the conditioner is no longer there after 20 minutes or so. Lisa Akbari's suggestion to reapply conditioner after 10 minutes is more in line with what this mag is saying. Thanks to the poster that posted that. I forgot about that tidbit.

And eventually even with that cover on, if you cook the chicken too long, it will dry up into cardboard. I've done that to a chicken in the crock pot which is nothing but moist heat. But that chicken was the nastiest stuff I had ever eaten because I let it cook waaaaaaay too long. I mean there was a huge difference in 6 hours and 10 which in regular oven time 4 hours would only be about an hour. I hope I'm making sense.

Well, I was going to buy the magazine but changed my mind. I have been sitting under my dryer for a while now and havent had any drying effects, I rub my hand over my hair before I wash it out and there is still plenty of conditioner there. I have gained 3 inches of new growth. So I decided if it aint broke dont fix it. I guess we shoul all do what works best for our own individual heads.

What about protein conditioners? Mine says that it needs to be left for at least 15 min. Is it just the moisturizing cond that go bad?

Exactly...too much of a good thing can also be bad.

That's why I asked if people were following the manufacturer's time suggestions...
