BKT upkeep - do you condition?

winterinatl

All natural!
From my understanding, the process COATS your hair...sort of like how Sabino Moisture block does but even more so. That is why the iron needss to be so hot...to seal the polymer onto the hair shaft.

So, is there even a point to conditioning? Many of you have already said that your hair feels conditioned. Does the conditioning benefits even penetrate the coating on the hair shaft? Or just coat it more?

I've read that you should continue conditioning your hair as usual. That's what I plan to do when I finally get my BKT. But maybe some other folks will chime in... :look:

I would really like to hear someone chime in and see what they are doing. Especially those who've had bkt for over a year and more.

Ok, I'll go first - I've only had the BKT in for a few weeks, but I've found that my hair still needs conditioner and a daily moisturiser (my hair LOVES moisture though, it would have taken the wave of a magic wand to change that), so I do a DC once a week and I've just added a weekly co-wash to that as well, and so far it's doing my hair nothing but good. That said, some people have said that they don't feel the need to moisturise, so it may just depend on your hair type.

I didn't change my regimen, I just found I used less of the same things and they seemed more effective, my treatment is wearing off now (5weeks) and I've been told its probably because my hair's natural (mostly) so not as porous...

Question.... Don"t You have to change your products? I read somewhere that Y'all can't use anything with sulfates. Is this true? If so, what products are y'all using?

I still use conditioner as usual. I had the BKT treatment done for the first 5 weeks ago. I also still do my same deep conditioning method once a week. You can see what shampoo and conditioner I use on a regular basis in my fotki. I usually have to wash my hair twice a week because that's what my hair likes. I still use the same leave ins and everything. The only thing that really changed was the shampoo and the manageability! I am going to do the process again in about a week. I plan on transitioning with BKT. I am currently 16 week post. My new growth is crazy!

I've only had one BKT treatment and one wash since the treatment.

I used conditioner, but did not DC. I used it because I have about 6 weeks of new growth that I didn't really put the BKT on because I didn't want it that close to my scalp. The directions say to plaace it at least 1/4 of an inch from the scalp, but I did it a little farther than that so I conditioned my hair, especially the non BKT'd part.

I also conditioned out of habit.

I love the way my hair feels and looks!

I'm also trying to transtion with BKT. Or at least do a long stretch.

why are you BKT'ing again in such a short amount of time?

Well I wash my hair fairly often and thus the treatment has worn off quicker than I anticipated. Luckily, however, there is no "overlap" problem with BKT like there is with relaxers. I just feel my new growth getting a bit thick and I need to tame it! I was going to wait for the 2 month mark, but I think I'm going to go ahead and cave in at 7 weeks.

What I really need to do is a keep my hands out of my hair challenge, but I just don't think it's quite long enough for braid outs and such. I am going to try more roller sets this time though!

ok. I wash my hair frequently too, so I'm also wondering how long my hair will last. I really love this BKT and think it'll be great for my hair so I don't want to stretch or transition without it.

I'm gonna go ahead and order a 32 oz bottle so that it'll be here when i need it.

thanks.

I condition with MT or Aphogee 2-Minute when I shampoo, but I mainly use Hair One. I haven't DC'd in a while...since before my BKT. I use leave-ins, mainly NTM, but not nearly as much as I used to, which has severely curbed my PJism. I have to say, what I have spent on BKT has been worth every penny in because of the time, energy, and money I no longer waste battling my hair.

BKTers can't use products containg sulfates. It's important to check shampoos, etc. for them. I still DC and do protein treatments. Keep your regimen.

But does someone know, for real, do the treatments penetrate the coating? What point is there to doing a protein conditioning treatment if you already have a your hair coated in Keratin (simply speaking).

I know that some of you keep your same regimen, but honestly given what I've learned (or so I think I've learned) it does not really makes sense too, except after a few weeks for you naturals when the treatments start to wear off.

But then I'm just the one asking questions, so am not sure. I would love a chemically inclined chica or stylist who works with BKT (DSD?) to chime in....

I still do everything the same. I pre-poo with ORS Hair Mayo once a week. I shampoo with my new sodium chloride free dandruff shampoo by Jason Naturals and I condition with Eluence Moisture Balance. I use sulfates though because I read I should only avoid sodium chloride. My BKT is still going strong and I still love it and I'll be BKT'ing again in either June or July. :)

I asked this question too, by PM, to a few longer time BKT'ers. All are still conditioning and some are still deep conditioning. I do not know that the deep conditioner penetrates but I did it anyway. I wash with WEN fig. My deep conditioner of choice last week was LeKair Cholesterol (orange one).

My BKT is still working well (last done on 4/23/09)

The products have to penetrate the coating because my new dandruff shampoo made my hair feel like burnt hay. When I use it from now on I plan on putting the shampoo on just the roots to stop the dry scalp and covering the rest of my hair with conditioner until I rinse. That let me know FOR SURE that my hair can tell the difference when I use different products. :yep:

I condition - I use aphogee keratin 2 min thingie and a lil ovation mixed in as well. i also airdry after i spray with with aphogee keratin tea something or the other. So it's like I'm reinforcing the keratin. My hair is doing great!

I've had my second treatment for a month (April 23) and it's starting to wear off. I am not fully natural but have 17 months of new growth.

My post BKT rollersets are no longer as silky with just rollers. We've been on vacation so my hair has been covered (half wig) but I plan to rollerset today to see what my results are like with just rollers. I have not had to flat iron since April 23 & have had great results. I was hoping to get 3 months out of the treatment but I do not think it will last that long for naturals.

I plan to use the same and the Joico liquid reconstructor which is mainly keratin. Thanks for Aphogee tip by the way!!
