Ok, so there are 101 threads about BKT :ohwell:. I’ve read a lot, but don’t see consensus as for which one is the best. Of course everyone’s hair is different and what works for one doesn’t work for others, but I just need to narrow my choices to then do further research.

So down to the facts, this is my mom’s hair:

I wan to introduce her to the BKT world . I think she’ll truly benefit from it but I need your advice to make the right decision. So, a little overview:

  • She is a 3c/4a medium density, Telaxed.
  • She telaxes about 2x a year, probably every six months but really it’s not set on stone, she can go longer or shorter. She uses a Dark & Lovely relaxer.
  • She colors often, permanent, Textures & Tones or Dark & Lovely, she doesn’t really have a preference.
  • She washes her hair & rollersets faithfully once a week. She wears her hair straight 100% of the time, either loose or on a ponytail.
I need to know:

  1. Which BTK do you recommend? Could you please elaborate on that?
  2. Considering her hair texture, what would the outcome be (somewhat straight, looser curl, etc)?
  3. Should I be concern about her hair color for this treatment?
  4. Where can I find the product for home application? (I want to do it for her)
  5. Any other concerns and/or recommendations?
I appreciate your replies ladies.

Your mum has beautiful hair and that colour is popping.

Back OT I have used QOD and DH and like DH more.

I have also heard good things about soft-liss.

I reiviewed my expericences with different brands here:

Hair type & density: 4a/4b wiry at the crown/bangs, silky in the perimeter. Not dense at all, relaxed/transitioning (was 8 weeks post for my first treatment in November 2009)

Brand: I've used Dre@m H@ir (airy flat iron, super slippery wet hair), Marcia Teixeira (beautiful waves), and Global 4% (more manageable new growth)--Loved them all

Formaldehyde content: 1.7-4%

Who Applied: SELF

Flat-iron type & temperature & # of passes: I use the Babyliss Nano titanium (LOVE IT). The first treatment (with Dre@m H@ir) was at 450 ºF and initially gave me BEAUTIFUL results (See my avatar) BUT the high heat caused MAJOR breakage (some areas of my head essentially "big chopped" themselves at the line of demarcation- my relaxed end couldn't take that much heat :wallbash:). Since then, I've been using 350-375 on the areas with relaxer and 375-410 in the all natural areas--it still works beautifully.

Deviations from directions: I almost never do the naked blow dry after the clarifying shampoo--that step is just for the convenience of the stylist at the salon (they don't have time to wait till your hair dries). I split my treatments: detangle, shampoo, and air dry (sometimes the night before) and then apply treatment to dry hair (as instructed), blow dry, then flat iron, etc.

How often used: When I have time! (anywhere from 2-6 weeks)

Specific details of results (satisfied or not, damage, etc.): SATISFIED!!!!!!!
Aside from my initial heat damage setback, I LOVE this treatment. It has eased my transition to natural (since the new growth behaves and there's no obvious mark of demarcation). I have NO tangling troubles to speak of, my hair is soft and manageable, and can air dry "straightish"if I pull it into a micro-pony (it's real short in the back). It's like a texturizer, but BETTER because once wet I get curls and moderate shrinkage (which I kinda like) on my 4a hair. My 4b hair at the crown/bangs is more problematic because it DOES NOT shrink nor curl--it's just kind of a streched-out , texlaxed-looking, fuzzy mess if left to its own devices. However, it does respond well to braidouts (to bled the textures) and flat irons well.

Did hair revert after non-use: YES! But with looser texture ( I keep overlapping the treatments)

Will continue use (yes or no):YES!!!!!!:yep::yep::yep::yep:

P.S.My surviving relaxed ends are frizz-free but very weak. Beware if you're relaxed.

Given that your mom's hair is double processed (texlaxing + color) she can expect STRAIGHT hair with her first BKT. Also the fact that she's 3c/4a almost ensures that the BKT will "take". I'll try to see if I remember the name of the member who is texlaxed and get relaxed-like results on her texlaxed hair (and loves it).

I think dre@m h@air or any other 2% formaldehyde formula should work. Marcia T. and Global 4% would probably be overkill given her hair type. Also, make sure she doesn't use 450ºF! She should try a lower temp to avoid a setback.

Good luck, and post pics when you're done!

P.S. One clarification about my comment re weak relaxed ends: Before I started my hair journey in Oct 2009 I used to relaxed bone straight every 4 weeks. Those relaxed ends of mine had been through a lot before BKT...

Which BTK do you recommend? Could you please elaborate on that?

I've tried 3 different brands and I achieve pretty much the same results with all 3. I usually choose brands in which the directions say clarify, blowdry, apply treatment, blowdry, flat iron, leave treatment on the hair for 24 hrs-3 days, then wash. I usually skip the blowdry and air dry.

I wouldn't say one particular brand is the best I think it depends more on the individual.
I choose the brand w/ the least amout of steps, soft-liss has too many steps for me. lol!

Brands I've tried and I still have hair on my head lol!
OK Keratin Chocolate -ebay
4 Ever Smooth - ebay
Smart Protection Keratin Treatment Chocolate-BSS

Considering her hair texture, what would the outcome be (somewhat straight, looser curl, etc)?

After the treatment her hair will be pin straight. After the first wash her hair will curl back up to its texlaxed state maybe a slightly looser curl again this depends on the individuals hair.

Should I be concern about her hair color for this treatment?

BKT is highly recommended for individuals w/ permed, relaxed, and/or color treated hair. No this should not be a concern. I would recommend you do a strand test before applying product on the entire head.

Where can I find the product for home application? (I want to do it for her)
Any other concerns and/or recommendations?

I purchase mine on ebay. My most recent bottle I purchased at my BSS. You can also purchase at amazon or google search online vendors.

You will need a fan although the brands I use don't have high fumes I use a fan anyway b/c the product does contain formaldehyde. Use gloves when applying. You don't need to use much of the product 1-1.5 ounces will treat her whole head. Make sure she uses a sodium & sulfate free shampoo & conditioner to protect the treatment (if u want it to last).

Very informative, exactly what I need. Thanks lilikoi, I will take a look at Dre@m H@ir. I see your fist treatment was back in Nov 2009, have you been using it continuously since then or have you stopped for a while? Are you interchanging the 2 or just stick to one of them all this time?

Thanks BlackGeisha, when you say you skip the blowdry, which one are you refering to? the initial bd before application or before flat ironing? :look:

Your welcome, I skip both blowdries. I clarify, then air dry to 70-80% dry, then I apply the treatment, and let the treatment dry on its own in my hair, then I flat iron. :)

Your mom's hair is NICE!! Wow!

I am just curious, why do you think she needs BKT? Her hair looks manageable and smooth.

go over to the KT support thread and post your question there. There is another (her name escapes me right now) but she too is a 3 and uses Softliss. It is Form. free, fairly easily to purchase and the price is reasonable. Marcia is hard to get.

QOD is also another fav. and it is my preference - but I also haven't tried Softliss yet.

If she prefers her hair straight - very straight, the KT will most likely give her somewhat texlax results. KT is a trial and error process as some hair has better "memory" than others. All will agree that the first to maybe the third wash/rollerset/style session after a KT treatment is easy peasy, fine tooth comb easy. But for me, after the first wash, the unrelaxed portion of my 4a was not having it with comb through root to tip business.

So just keep this in mind - its a process.

  1. Which BTK do you recommend? Could you please elaborate on that? Global Keratin (4% - what I use)
  2. Considering her hair texture, what would the outcome be (somewhat straight, looser curl, etc)? See Dak (I think) she's got a looser curl, I believe her curl would definitely be looser I went from 4ab- 4a with bits of 3c- this ALL wore off after I stopped using BKT for 4 months.
  3. Should I be concern about her hair color for this treatment? Maybe, she'll probably get a straighter result because of her chemical treatments- if she doesn't mind then no problem
  4. Where can I find the product for home application? (I want to do it for her) I bought it on their website (google)
  5. Any other concerns and/or recommendations? Whatever you're doing MAKE sure her hair is in good condition first, you DO NOT have to use 430f and 10 swipes for the treatment to set. Good luck!

ETA: I don't know if she SHOULD use the 4% but I gave the review based on my own experience on Natural coloured 4ab hair

thanks a lot, I see the heat is a big deal, do you follow the instructions to the T?

^^^Not really. I DC before I start the process, I don't do the clarifying shampoo all the time (use any other shampoo), I do maybe 3-4 swipes with the flatiron.

Last year I used QOD gold 2% on my texlaxed hair and lost all wave pattern. I followed instructions to the t. Some have said the heat was just too much; I will try again this summer but with less heat/less passes. I just got a relaxer but with luck can use the bkt to grow it out. but not if it knocks my waves out totally again.
