Big Chop - Who should do my cut?

I have been Relaxer Free for 14 months and 11 days! Yeah Me!
It feels like its' been a very long transition and I am now ready to take the next step.
My question is this -
I like to wear my hair straight, I go to a Dominican hair salon once every two weeks or so and have my hair blown straight. I will probably continue to do this but maybe just once a month or so and attempt to wear wash and go's most of the time.

I have been looking into DevaCut's and there's a salon in Symrna, GA (curltopia) that I am considering going to and have them do my big Chop. Should I do this? or Have the Dominican salon that I go to cut my hair in a style that will look good when they straighten it?

I want the luxury of my hair being in a style whether wearing it curly or straight.

I would go to Salon Balisi in Dunwoody. She has skills and she also does a fantastic flat iron job on natural hair. She is also natural herself.

Also she only books one client at a time so you won't wait all day. =)

Keshieshimmer thanks so much, I have been researching online for months. I picked Curltopia because the site promises to teach you about your hair texture and which products to use. Will she be informative? I really want to get styling options and product recommendations for wearing my hair curly.

To me she is pretty knowlegable and she is a member on here. She knows when I don't fully detangle (ha!) and she is uber gentle with my hair as well. She also knows the powers of steaming! It wouldn't hurt to email her with your concerns. Also because she is the only stylist you know what you will get each visit!

http://www.salonbalisi.com/ Sharon is also on FB.

I'm not sure about the salons you mentioned (although I've heard good things about DevaChan) but I'd suggest getting a curly cut and not going to the Dominican salon and letting them cut it to suit your straight hair.

IMO curly hair cut straight across doesn't look as attractive. But if you cut your hair to suit your curls, it'll just look layered when you straighten it.

Thanks Zaz - thats my major concern I really want my hair to look nice either way. I'm nervous because I'm not sure if I do a big chop how long my hair will be and will it look crazy straight. So I'm trying to make the best decision.

If you're confident in yourself enough you should do it yourself (and make a video of it for everyone to see  ) It's much more liberating when you can do it yourself. I did both of my BC myself. But if you're not, which is okay, I would suggest a barber, or a salon you wholeheartedly trust. I don't want to read a thread where you were crying in the chair cause they cut too much off.

Good Luck!

OKay!!!!! I don't want to be crying either, thats why I'm leaning more to a natural hair salon because I'm really going to need help with defining my curls, etc.. I have not played around very much with products and when I go to work the following monday I want to walk confidently either way. Color me SCARED! I just want it done right!

I personally would chop myself and go to the salon for a style. Another great stylist in atl is Racheal Swire of Salon Cabelo. She is natural and has YouTube videos. Very knowledgeable chic. I don't let anyone touch my hair, but if I were to it would be her.

OK ladies I did it. I was so tired last night of this going back and forward that I decided to chop off the last bit of relaxer myself. Well the results.........the back is longer than the rest of my hair, the left side looks like it may be slightly heat trained(damaged), and well the right side its reallly short. WHAT THE!!!!!

Now I'm all crazy looking! I really need to go somewhere, I'm convinced that I more comfortable wearing it straight and I need to just go to my regular Dominican salon and let her get me even, and once I do that then in two weeks go to a Natural salon and let them show me what to do with this hair on my head. What do you guys think?

Congrats on your chop. I suppose that if the Dominicans always straighten your hair it would be best for them to shape it up. I wouldn't do it though. I would go to someone who has experience with natural hair care/health.

Best of luck.

I echo Keshieshimmer comments. One of the salons mentioned earlier that has expertise in natural hair would be my choice. To me the Dominican salons are not experienced in natural hair styles compared to the salons already mentioned. I did my own BC 2 years ago and don't go to salons. I learned a lot from YouTube and this site.

Ok after much contemplating, I have heard all of you ladies and I decided today not to go back to the Dominican salon, but to give a natural salon a try. I contacted everyone's suggestions and of course they are all booked for tomorrow. I contacted Too Groovy and was able to get in and will see Tammy. Has anyone heard of her? Am I in good hands? Any reviews of this salon. I'm SCCCARRRREEDDD!
