Hi ladies! I had quite an experience today. I went to a new salon...it will be the last time I ever step foot in the place in this lifetime! First off...my appointment was at 10:30. I was on time. I walked in and the lady told me I'll be right with you. I must have stood there 10 minutes before she came back. She finally told me to have a seat. I then had to wait 45 minutes for her to start on my head. Okay...I gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought her timing might be a little off today. She handled my hair and head very roughly...it felt like I was getting a beatdown...then she was scratching my scalp with her fingernails. At that point I just wanted to get the heck out of her chair so I told her to wrap my hair so I could get up out of that place. Well, after it dried...all she did was comb it out and tried to clip my ends. I wouldn't let her cuz I didn't trust her. so she says you're all set. I asked her was she going to flat iron it and she told me it was extra. Huh? Extra? I told her no thanks I would do it myself. She had the nerve to say I owed her 60 bucks. I asked her fuh whut??? She dropped it down to 40 cuz she admitted she was a little behind. I paid her and got up out of there. When I got home I flat ironed my hair. Much to my chagrin...the whole left side of my head was still kinky. I started to go back up there but I was afraid I might get overly excited. I am still upset...maybe I'll go back in a few days and show her my hair. But that's a useless trip because I really don't want her hands in my hair anymore.
I am contemplating go natural...but am unsure if I want to use the pressing comb or go just plain natural. My hair is getting really thin, tho. I have been reading the board and getting a lot of great tips. I started on the MSM and have been deep conditioning and co washing and keeping my hair moisturized with Mango Butter. I see signs of it thickening up. I want to start using the MTG...but I think somewhere on this board, I saw that it was unhealthy. Is this true? If I should decide to go natural...must I cut my hair to keep it from breaking off?

There's so many unprofessional, moronic stylists out there. :( I actually go to a really good one and I don't know what I'll do if she decides to pack up and leave. I'm sorry this happened to you. It happens to so many others, so you aren't in the minority.

Welcome to the LHCF.

Hi Bees,
I'm sorry for your bad experience. When I used to go to salons I became fed up with paying for abuse and learned to do my hair at home. Why pay for abuse?
If you are afraid to apply a relaxer at home you may want to have a stylist that you trust, show you how- heck, offer to pay them a little extra for the tutoring session. If you are looking for something a little more gentle to put on your hair bc you aren't quite ready to go 100% natural, you may want to try the Bodiphier. I am always raving about this product bc it really helps make my hair more manageable without the damage like a relaxer or texturizer can do. And you can apply it like a deep conditioner, just comb it if you want straighter hair. No damage, no burning, no breakage. You can do it yourself and end up with manageable, soft, bouncy hair that resists humidity and holds your style be it natural curls or blow dried. Yep, I know I sound like a commercial, but I promise I do not work for them, I just try to turn other women of color onto the product. Besides if you don't like it you can return to using traditional relaxers. http://www.storesonline.com/site/681420/page/45029

I also use the MTG and have had good results, just finished my first month and grew and retained 1"- a real big deal for me. I haven't heard anything about people experiencing any problems with the exception of one lady on this board who reported that it dried her hands out- I think that's what she wrote. I believe she decided to stop using it.

Best of luck.

So sorry about this.
I agree with caligirl's comment. But let me tell you a few other things. I see that you became a member in July of this year. Healthy, beautiful hair does not come overnight, be gentle with your hair and let time take its course with your hair.

RavenSunshine: Is it really the MTG increasing your growth? Because hair grows faster in the summer. How many inches does your hair get in the summer without growth-aids?

Hello, and welcome! I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the salon. :( I'm a cosmetology student in the ATL, so of course I'm curious which salon you went to. If you don't mind sharing this information without putting them on blast, please PM me. It's important to me, as I'm nearing graduation and want to make sure I don't apply for a chair at such a salon. All the ladies have given you good advice and as a natural head myself, don't go natural just because you're frustrated. Long before I decided to become a hair stylist, I learned how to do my own hair, including touchups, trims, spirals, etc. because I too was fed up with the wasted time, rough treatment, chemical burns and hair damage at the hands of stylists I entrusted to handle my precious tresses. This was never more true than after I moved to Atlanta. Just know that not all stylists are incompetent and uncaring. It can take time to find a good one.

Yall...RESTRAIN ME please! I might hafta go down there and give her a beatdown...cussdown...or somethin. I woke up this morning and I'll be darn if I don't have a sore throat and sniffles! I felt a cool draft as she was wrapping my hair. I noticed she had a window air conditioner going in addition to the central air that was kickin. Then I went and sat under the super hot dryer and back in front of the air. I think maybe this girl doesn't have it all!
Anywho...I have been natural before and I enjoyed it. I am just having a problem with how to style it once it is kinky. I ain't as young as I used to be. Maybe you younguns can get away with wash and go...I just don't want to look like a refugee from the cotton fields!

ravesunshine...thanks for the info on Bodiphier. I'm going to read up on it now. I assume I can use this product when I have more new growth. This sounds like something I am interested in. I am a problem with humidty and sweating in my head.

Balisi...I don't mind putting gurlfriend on blast. It's a shop called Yolanda's...in Ellenwood. I responded to her very pretty ad in the neighborhood news. Big mistake!

Thanx for the advice Anky...I realize I am going to have to be patient in this endeavor. My only worry is that I'll be trying to buy everthing that anyone reccomends. LOL
Thanx to ALL!

I hope her name was not Jackie Bell because I had a diaster with her when I lived in Atlanta last year. I am so sorry for your experience, but that is one good thing I have found out about this board since I have been a member. Everyone is here for support and tell you what salons to stay away from.

That Bodiphier relaxer sounds cool, but I'm scary. Is there only one person on this board who uses it? I don't want my hair to fall out or anything... maybe I should just stay natural. I'll look into it anyway.
