Best Protective Styles for Hair Retention for Neck Length Hair

I know! And I was reading Chicoro's book and she had listed that NL to SL was one of the fastest growing points! I was like, in who's world

Okay here are two questions;

Is there anybody on the board that has gone from NL to CBL or SL by doing their protective styles and

How long did it take?

Also, make sure you mention if you are Natural or Relaxed, that makes a difference.

It took me less than a year to go from NL to SL...This was prior to LHCF but during that time I'd wash (with shampoo), don't remember DC-ing, applying Dax pomade and whoe 4 buns (I thought I was cute too). I was living abroad......

I went from what you see in my avi to SL in about a year (actually, 1 year, 2months). At that length, it really isn't about protective styling (the hair length in itself is protective). I relaxed my hair every 12 weeks and did a lot of low manipulation styles. In my opinion, getting to SL was easy. As long as I did what I was supposed to do ( DC often, low manipulation, stretching relaxers, etc.) my hair grew and I was able to retain length.

I know. I get mad growth but something is not working. It could be lack of consistency, it could be my anemia but it's still not pushing as fast to SL as my growth is coming in? You understand what I mean?

I am neck length. Started at ear length. I noticed a lot of growth after I stopped manipulating my hair so much. I roller set with perm rods. Moisturize at least twice a day with S-Curl and I have been taking my vitamins more consistently. Low-manipulation styles are the key at this point, in my opinion. Looking to get my hair braided in the next few days to really allow my hair time to just grow.

Weekly:

Wash with Aphogee
Follow up with the Aphogee 2 Min
Deep Con with ORS Hair Mayo
Twist hair using Neutrogena Triple Moisture Leave In Cream
Seal Ends with Oil

Daily:

Moisturize hair with Triple Leave-In
Seal with Scurl and Oil on the ends.

Everything was working fine. I was really pushing past CBL, but I think of just having twists/knots in my hair for like 3 months at a time, I got bored and fell off.

It's like my hair was/is growing, but I still feel it should be longer at this point. I need to see more visible length in order to stay focused

I don't hair type.

Must get back on Iron.

Hmm....it looks like you have a lot of protein in your reggie. You have to be careful with that since you don't want to overload on protein. What has helped me is to be on top of my moisture game. Although I DC with AO GPB or ORS Replenishing (my protein DCs), I tend to DC the most with AO HSR or WC (moisturizing) and my hair loves it! That coupled with keeping my porosity in check has done wonders for my hair.

Also, make sure your diet is well balanced. I'm slightly anemic but I take a multi vit daily and eat foods that are rich in iron. I also drink a lot of water. The important thing is to take care of your body from the inside so that it reflects on the outside.

You are using a lot of protein and no moisturizing deep conditioner. However as your anemic, the protein could help to reinforce your strands (iron is better though :) ).

Why do you think you have to wear twists and knots for "3 months at a time"? That seems a bit excessive.

Like I literally might have my hair in the same hairstyle like the twists then I wrap the twists around itself to form a knot and I might have my hair like this for weeks, before I know it, a least 2 or 3 months have past without a new hairstyle. If my hair was longer I would just either bun it or I can style it some how.

I use the ORS Hair Mayo. That's not considered moisturizing at all? Can you give me some examples of a good moisturinzing Deep Conditioner.

For awhile I was taking:

GNC Ultranourishair
GNC Biotin
Flaxseed Oil Pills
Evening Primrose Pills

All this at once.

But I did get my Iron pills (from the doctor) and my Multivitamin. I am thinking about just doing that, the Multivitamin, the Iron Pill and my Vitamin D pills, (having severe knee problems)

And I hardly drink water :nono: Never as a kid, maybe that's why my hair stayed short in high school and college because most of the women in my family has long hair, so I should have at least been able to get to SL naturally (without additional retention help I mean).

Right? Or Wrong?

It sounds like you get into a styling rut. Why not take the twists/knots out and rock a curly fro, then a puff, then back to twists, alternating styles weekly or every two weeks? You could also try single strand coils, roller sets, etc. Experiment and have fun with your hair!

I'm in France so can't recommend products that would be readily available to you in the US. I use "drugstore" brands like Le Petit Marseillais and Garnier Ultra Doux.

The vitamin thing sounds like a plan. The key thing to keep in mind that your hair growth starts from the inside out. So if you are putting unhealthy things into your body, it will reflect in your hair, skin, and nails. I definitely suggest you increase your water intake. Maybe you can get those Crystal Light packet things to add to your water to make it more palatable.

I am sooooooooooooo happy for this post:grin: I am currently NL and so often I see girls who are already well passed that and I don't know what to do. I have found that wearing my hair in cornrows, braids, and braidouts are doing well with moisture and retention. But I am also working on getting my hair to get thicker as well! Oh the information you find when you start your hair journey and you realize it's not just about growing the length!!!! :drunk:
